iMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-TONGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2ll0,33, dated November 26, 1878; application lilod October 16, 1878.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. A'rwoon WHITE, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Tongs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in

which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tongs embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 isa top or plan view thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention consists of a pair of pipe-ton gs having its adjustable jaw provided with a downward-projectin g heel which rests on a movable collar as a fulcrum, and connected to a lever, whereby said jaw may be closed and tightened on the pipe, 850., easily and powerfully.

It also consists in providing the collar and lever of the movable jaw with engaging-faces, so that opening motions of said jaw and loosening of the pipe, &e., are prevented.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the stationary jaw, which is fixed to the stock or handle B, and has its inner face of curved, angular, or other equivalent recessed shape to form a hook. 0 represents the movable jaw, which Is firmly connected to a lever, D, by means of an intermediate yoke, E, which is slipped freely over the stock B, whereby said jaw, yoke, and lever may be readily moved in the longitudinal direction of the handle, and thus bring the two jaws nearer together or farther apart.

A portion of the upper end of the stock or handle Bis threaded, and on the same is fitted a screw-collar, F, which forms a fulcrum for the movable jaw (J, whose heel a rests on the upper face of said collar.

The operation is as follows: The movable jaw is opened and adjusted by rotating the collar 1*, so that when said jaw is closed the pipe or other article placed against the face of the stationary jaw will receive the bite of the movable jaw, which jaw is then closed and the lever D held securely or pressed toward the handle B, the pipe bein g thereby firmly clamped or griped between the two jaws, the hold increasing as the tongs are operated.

In order to prevent opening motions of the jaw and consequent loosening of the pipe, I construct the upper part of the collar F with a projcctin g flange, 1), whose outer face 1s curved inwardly and downwardly, and with the same engages the portion or face (I of the lever D, which portion is arc-shaped, the are being described from the heel c of the movable jaw.

When the jaw C is closed against the pipe the arc-shaped portion d of the lever bears under the curved flange b, and causes a locking contact of said portion and flange, thus preventing the shifting or sliding of the heel a of the movable jaw on the collar I, and hirewise preventing disengaging movement of said jaw from the pipe which it gripes, whereby the immovability of the jaw and firm gripe or hold of the pipe are insured.

When the tongs or wrench is in service the strain of the movable jaw is received by the collar I which is a strong member, whereby the implement is consequently strong and durable, said collar having at its upper end a flange whose outer face is curved inwardly and downwardly, and the lever having on its inner face an arc-shaped portion, the curve whereof is described from the heel of the movable jaw, whereby, when the movable jaw is closed, the arc-shaped portion of the lever bears under the curved flange of the collar and causes a locking contact of the lever and flange, thus preventing the shifting or sliding of the heel of the movable jaw on the collar, and likewise preventing disengaging movement of said jaw from the pipe which it gripes, whereby the immovability of the jaw and firm gripe or hold of the pipe are insured.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The jaw A and jaw O, with fulcrum-heel a, in combination with the screw-collar F, having a flange, b, with a curved face, and the lever I), having an arc-shaped portion, 01, to lock with the curved face of flange b, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
