UNITED STATES PATENT OFFEQE ADVERTISING STRAP HANGER Abel Garcia Sirera, New York, N. Y.
Application May 11, 1937, Serial No. 142,015
6 Claims.
This invention relates to advertising strap hangers and has for its general object the provision of a strap hanger which carries above the hand grip portion and within the frame, an advertising plate or plates so related to the frame that the latter can be secured to suspending means of varying thickness without impediment on account of the presence of the advertising plates.
Another object of the invention is to provide an advertising strap hanger of the class described in which the space within the frame of the hanger is differentiated into a lower or handportion and an upper portion bounded at least in, part by tongues or grooves in relation to which an ad- 1 vertising plate may be placedby springing, the hanger being provided with means for securing the advertising plate or plates in position.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a strap hanger Withadvertising plates secured at one or both sides above the hand grip portion, the
sides of which hanger are of suchlength and possess such a degree of resiliency that they can be'forced slightly together or slightly apart to receive suspending means of different thickness, including an advertising plate or plates of such size and so secured with respect to the frame as to permit the sides of the frame to be warped independently of the plate or plates so that the latter oppose no impediment to the movement of the frame. H
Still another object of the invention is the provision of means extending inwardly from the frame at opposite sides, forming either in whole or in part a. bridge piece segregating the hand grip V portion from the advertising plate holding portion and supporting the advertising plate.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the following description of a preferred and practical embodiment thereof proceeds.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of the following specification and throughout the several figures of which the same characters of reference have been employed to designate identical parts:
.45 Figure 1 is a front elevation of an advertising strap hanger embodying the features of the invention;
.Figure 2 is a similar view with the advertising plate removed, and partly in section;

Figure'8 is a vertical cross sectiontaken along the line 8-8 of Figure 6; V v
Figure 9 is a transverse section taken along the line 9-9 of Figure 6; and
Figure 10 is a fragmentary view showing a .1.0
longed into lugs 4 and 5 which do not come quite together, but are slightly spaced apart so as to permit the insertion of the suspending means 6 which in the illustration comprise a leather strap. Since it is the intention of the invention 25 to make a strap hanger which may be universally applied to suspending means of different thick ness, the space 1 between the lugs 4 and 5 is not of fixed width, but it may be enlarged or contracted by warping the sides of the frame inwardly or outwardly through their inherent resiliency'so as to make the strap hanger fit suspending means of different thickness.
Since the primary purpose of theinventio-n is to make a strap hanger which will carry. adver- 5 tising matter, thespace within the frame l is differentiated into a lower part 8 through which the fingers are inserted when the hand grips the bight of the frame I and an upper part which is designed to be occupied by the plates 9 and I0, 40 one on each side. The frame I is preferably provided with the inwardly extending bridge pieces II and I2 which separate at least in part, the hand space 8 from the sign space above. The sides 2 and 3 and the bridge pieces H and I2 are provided with means for retaining the plates 9 and I0. Figures 1 and 3 show that the side pieces have ribs l3 and i4 flanked by grooves l5 and it into which the plates 9 and ii) are sprung, said plates resting against opposite sides of the ribs I3 and I4. The bridge pieces II and I 2 are provided with a central channel H in which the lower edges of the plates 9 and I0 rest. If the plates 9 and Ill were immovably fixed with respect to the sides 2 and 3 of the frame I the capacity of said sides to be warped for varying the space between the lugs 4 and 5 would be inhibited and consequently the invention includes means for providing freedom of motion between the sides 2 and 3 and the plates 9 and Ill. Said means consists of lugs l8 and I9 extending inwardly from the opposite sides 2 and 3 and having slots 20 and 2! elongated in the direction in which the sides 2 and 3 move when warped. The opposite plates 3 and II] are secured together by screw and nut connections 22 and 23, passing through the slots 28 and 2 I, the elongation of which permits warping of the sides 2 and 3 without impediment from the plates 9 and i9. Said plates must be of such size as to provide a little clearance progressively increasing toward the top of the strap hanger in order to permit relative freedom of movement between the parts.
The fact that the bridge pieces H and I2 are discontinuous in the middle, places the fulcrum about which the sides 2 and 3 of the frame oscillate when warped at the point 24 giving the advantage of maximum resiliency.
A slight variant of the invention is shown in Figure 10 in which slotted lugs 25 and 23 corresponding in all respects to the lugs l8 and I9 of Figure 2, are placed in lapping relation adjacent the space I, the slots in said lugs intersecting so that they may be secured by a single screw and bolt connection instead of the plural bolt and nut connections required in connection with the first described form of the invention. Inasmuch as the bridge pieces H and i2 are discontinuous, it is preferred to turn the bottom edges of the plates 9 and ID as indicated at 21 and 23 in Figure 5, to avoid the danger of cutting the hand against the otherwise sharp edges of said plates.
Figures 6 to 9, inclusive, show a modified form of the invention in which the strap hanger is not clamped to a suspending means, but secured by a swivel connection 29 so that it can rotate axially against the suspending means 30. Otherwise the structural features of this form of the invention are common with the forms already described. The frame 3| is here shown as being formed into an endless circle having a continuous bridge piece 32 segregating the hand grip space 33 from the sign space. bridge piece 32 which bound the sign space, are provided with ribs 34 and grooves 35 and 36 and the channel 31 similar to the corresponding parts as shown in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive.
The sign plates 38 and 39 are sprung into place and secured by means of screw bolt connections 40 and 4! passing through slots 42 and 43 formed in lugs 44 and 45 which extend inwardly from opposite sides of the frame 3|. Since the frame 3| is not open at the top, the slots 42 and 43 do not have the same function in this form of the invention as they do in connection with that form of the invention described in Figures 1 to 5, inelusive, but they have another advantage inasmuch as the screw holes in the plates 38 and 39 will remain in alignment with the slots 42 and 43 regardless of the slight shifting in the alignment of the screw holes which will occur from the deforming of the plates 38 and 39 occasioned by springing them into the grooves 35 and 36 and the channel 31.
It will be understood from the above that the invention provides advertising space for the strap hangers of street cars, buses and other public conveyances, that the advertising plates are removable so that the advertisement may be Those parts of the. frame 3| and changed from time to time by the substitution of other plates and that according to the invention it is not necessary to make many sizes of strap hanger to fit suspending means of different thickness which are encountered in various conveyances, but that through the principle of the warping of the sides of the strap hanger independently of the advertising plates, a single type or size of strap hanger is adaptable to all sizes of suspend ing means.
While I have in the above description disclosed what I believe to be preferred and practical embodiments of my invention, it will be understood tothose skilled in the art that the details of construction as illustrated and described are merely by way of construction and not to be construed as restricting the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
