ADVERTISING SIGN.
APPLICATION FILED MAR-7,1921
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADVERTISING-SIGN.
Application filed March 7, 1921.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SoHLossnn, a resident of New York city, Bronx county, State of New York, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising signs, one of the objects being to provide a sign arranged so that any desired advertising matter can be placed thereupon, preferably in the form of words made up of independent letters which are detachably connected to the supports therefor. A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby letters of various sizes can be used. In other words, I arrange a supporting medium for letters constructed so that it can be adjusted to receive carriers for letters of various sizes, whereby large or small letters can be used.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will finally point out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement, the frame and carriers being broken away;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical view, the frame being broken away. the section being taken on a line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the frame member of the sign, the section being taken on a line 33 in Fig. 1, the supporting bars for the letter carriers being omitted;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the letter carrier supports;
Fig. 5 is a rear view of one of the letter carriers; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the means to retain the supporting bars, for the letter carriers, in position.
As herein embodied, my improved sign consists of a frame 7. supporting bars 8 and 9 which are adjustable longitudinally of the frame. I have herein illustrated but two bars, but as many can be employed as may be desirable. The bars 8 and 9 support carriers 10, each support being provided with a letter. The letters can be painted upon the carriers. or embossed or applied in any manner desirable.
The side members 11 and 12 of the frame Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 450,179.
8 are each provided with a groove 13 extending longitudinally thereof, as are also the end members 14 and 15, the grooves in members 1 1 and 15 being indicated by 16. The wall at one side of the grooves 13 and 16 is provided with threaded openings 17 to receive a screw 18 (see Fig. 6) by means of which the bars 8 and 9 are held in position. The bars 8 and 9, at each end, slidably engage the adjacent groove 13; hence they can be shifted along said'grooves to vary the distance between said bars in order to accommodate carriers 10 of different lengths. Each opening 17 may carry a screw 18, or one screw for each side 11 and 12 may be used; in this event the screw would be removed from one opening and applied to another in the event of the bars being adjusted. Each carrier 10 consists of a plate, the ends of which engage a rabbet 19 formed along the adjacent edge of the bars 8 and 9, so that the surfaces of the bars and plate will be flush and also provide a backing member 20 to aid in supporting the carriers 10, said backing member 20 being the rear wall of the rabbet 19.
Each plate 10 carries a clip 21 of resilient metal, such as thin spring steel, brass, or other suitable material having yieldable ends 22, preferably rounded. When the plates 10 are forced into the rabbets 19, the clips or rounded ends 22 will engage the backing 20 or rear wall of the rabbet 19 and hold the carriers in place. To remove the carriers, it is but necessary to force them out of the rabbets 19.
Each longitudnal edge of each bar 8 and 9 is preferably provided with a rabbet 19 to cooperate with a similar bar should more than two bars be used in a sign. The carriers 10 will be made in different sizes, and, of course, blank carriers will be used as spacing elements between the words of an advertisement.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a sign, frame members provided with grooves, extending longitudinally thereof, bars extending across said frame having the ends thereof in slidable engage ment with a groove in an adjacent frame member, means to secure the bars in adjusted positions in said grooves, each of said bars being provided with a rabbet extending longitudinally thereof, carriers for ad- Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
vertising matter arranged to engage said rabbets, and resilient clips carried by the carriers to releasabiy engage the rear Wall of said rabbets.
2. In a sign, frame members provided with grooves, extending longitudinally thereof, bars extending across said frame having the ends thereof in s1idab1eengagement With a groove in an adjacent frame member, set screws to secure the bars in 10 carriers to releasably engage the bars.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 15 signature.
ARTHUR SCHLOSSER.
