KNOCK-DOWN DRAWER Filed Feb. 18, 1936 Patented Dec. 14, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KNOCK-DOWN DRAWER Application February 18, 1936, Serial No. 64,442
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a knock down drawer. It is a primary object and purpose of the present invention to provide a very strong and durable drawer which may be made as a knock down structure but with the parts very readily assembled together. A further object of the invention is to provide very simple means for adjustably mounting drawer partition guides on the sides of the drawer in which transverse partitions may be removably positioned, the mountings for said partition guides also serving as a means by which the parts of the drawer are securely held and connected together.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a drawer made in accordance with our invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through one side and an adjacent portion of the bottom of the drawer.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section through a side and adjacent end portions of the drawer in a plane between the upper and lower edges thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of a slightly modified form of structure embodying the same invention.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The drawer has the usual front I, back 2 and sides 3 and 4 with a horizontal bottom 5, the edge portions of which are received in suitable grooves a short distance above and at-the inner sides of the front, back and sides of the drawer as indicated in Fig. 2.
In the preferred form of structure shown the rear side of the front I and the front side of the back 2, near or adjacent the ends thereof, and the cooperating ends of the sides 3 and 4 are cut to make joints of the type shown at 6. That is, the .ends of the sides 3 and 4 are inclined so that the inner side of a side 3 or 4 is somewhat longer than the outer side thereof while the front and back I and 2 are recessed to correspond with and receive the inclined ends of the sides 3 and 4.
At the inner side of each side 3 and 4 two spaced apart longitudinal grooves 1, preferably of a rectangular shape in cross section, are cut. Long rods 8, each having a head So at one end and provided with wood screw threads 8b at the other end, pass through the back 2 lengthwise of the grooves I and screw into the front 6 of the drawer. The bottom 5 having previously been properly located in place threading of the screw threaded ends of the rods 8 into the front I securely connects and binds the parts together. It is, of course evident, that the screw threaded rods 8 may be removed quite easily, whereupon the drawer parts are all separable from each other and the drawer is thus very readily put in a knock down condition. It may be shipped in the knock down and assembled after it has reached its destination.
The rods 8 also serve as supports for guides for the ends of vertical partition members to be located transversely across the inner drawer space. The partition guides 9 are of sheet metal and of channel form with the flanges extending inwardly and located in parallel vertical planes. On the back of each of the guides suitable spring clamps II] are welded or otherwise permanently secured so spaced and positioned as to readily enter the grooves l and snap over the rods 8. It is also evident that after thus connected with the rods 8 the guides may be adjusted to different positions if desired; or the guides may be bodily removed and reconnected with the rods 8 at a different position. The ends of vertical partitions are inserted in the guides 9 between the vertical spaced apart flanges thereof.
In Fig. 4 substantially the same structure is illustrated except that the joint 6a is of a slightly different character, the back side of the front I and the front side of the back 2 being vertically grooved with a groove narrower than the thickness of the sides 3 and 4 used. Said sides 3 and 4 at their ends are cut to provide tongues of proper widths to enter the grooves as shown at 6a. The assembly and connection of the parts is identical with that previously described.
The invention described while of a simple char- 7 acter is particularly practical and useful. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
We claim:
1. A drawer construction having front and back and spaced apart vertical sides, horizontal rods extending lengthwise of each of said sides connecting the front and back of the drawer, and vertically positioned channel shaped partition guides each having clips attached at its rear side, said clips slidably connecting with said rods.
2. In a drawer structure having front, back and vertical sides, said sides having longitudinal horizontal grooves therein, a rod extending between the front and back and located in each of said grooves in the sides, transverse partition positioned channel with a back web and inwardly extending spaced'apart flanges, and spring clips attached to the rear side of the web, said clips springing over and detachabiy connecting with the rods and being received in the grooves in said holding members each comprising a vertically sides of therdrawer, with the back web of said partition guides bearing against the inner sides of the drawer sides.
