METAL-FRAME SCREEN.
Application led April 28.
My -invention relates to improvements in metal frame screens, it more particularly relating to door screens, although some of the features are also applicable to other forms of screens, such as window screens.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a metallic frame which will be simple and strong in construction and economical in manufacture.
A further and more specific object is to provide a metallic trame having supporting flanges or shelves for the wire clot-h forming the screen proper of such a nature that the clothl may be laid flat thereon and be secured thereto by flat metal strips which may be easily removed to permit renewal of the cloth.
Another object of the'invention is to providev a simple and eii'ective arrangement :tor varying the dimensions of the screen trame to accommodate the frame to different l sized door-ways.

The side and end members of our improved screenv frame are each formed of a strip of sheet metal, 1, 2, 8 and 4, bentI to` form a tubular structure, of rectangular form in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, with the edges of the metallic sheet bent and interlocked so as to provide a flat inwardlyextending flange or shelf. The frame members are constructed alike. so that a description of the member l yshown in detail in in Fig. 3 will suiiice. Before bending, a part of that portion of each metallicl sheet which forms the inner wall and flange is cut away at the end so that the inner wall and the flange are terminated at a point removed from the extreme end of the .structure a distance equal to the width of the adjoining member whereby the ends of members may be made to overlap by insert- Ing the end of one adjoining member between the forward and rear walls of the other adjoining member,- as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. In the drawings the ends of the top and bottom members are shown inserted between the forward and rearwalls of the side members, the overlapping parts being secured together in any suitable way such as byy rivets 8. l
The side frame members are connected together intermediate their ends by a cross member consisting ofa metallic strip 9 bent to a channel form with its edges bent upwardly and downwardly to form flanges 10. A metallic strip 11 closes the open side of this channel member 9 and has its edges 11 bent over the flanges 10 to provide shelves to receive the wire cloth. The ends of this cross-member are inserted through apertures in the inner walls of the two side frame members, with the iianges or shelves terminated at the walls, and the inserted ends are secured by rivets 8 (Fig. 1);
The edges of the screen 12 are secured to the inwardly projecting shelves or iianges formed on the frame members and cross member by metallic strips 13, any suitable fastening devices being employed, such as small screw bolts 14, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. The frame members are preferably reinforced by wooden illers 15 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.l
In order to adapt the door to dierent sized door frames we have provided the up per edge and the free or forward edge with extensible members 16 and 17 which can be moved outwardly or inwardly so as to increase or decrease the dimensions of the door, Each of these extensible members is in the form of a U-shaped sheet metal strip which kembraces its associated frame member. Each 4extensible member is provided the adjoining- Q. Y' t kiasiaiawi with a series of trzgisversely-arranged slots 18 to receive bolts 19 which ass through the frame members so as to c amp the extensible members in any position of adjustment. In Fig. 1 these extensible members are shown in their extreme innermost positions to provide a door of minimum height,
and Width while in Figs. 6 and 7 the extensible members are shown adjusted to their extreme outermost positions so as to impart to the door its maximum height and Width. When the extensible members are adjusted in the last-mentioned position a U-shaped sheet metal filler 20 is applied to the uppermost outer corner of the door as shown in Figs.' 6 and 7, this corner being inserted within the walls of the extensible member 17 and embracing the walls of the member 16.
-By this construction it will be seen that a Very simple and strong metallic frame for screens is provided which can be economically manufactured and which permits. of the ready renewal of the Wire cloth forming the screen proper; further, that by the usev of the extensible members described the dimensions of the frame may be varied to suitdiferent sized door-ways.
Having thus described our invention, we'
claim 1. In a structure of the character de-` scribed, a frame consisting of top, bottom and side members, each of said membersv l in line with the outer face of the said side wall, and meansy for removably securing the edges of wire cloth to the outer faces of said ledges.
2. In a structure of the character described, a frame consisting of top, bottom and side members, each of said members consisting of sheet metal bent to tubular shape to form outer, inner and side walls, the edge of the inner wall being bentinwardly at right angles to said wall adjacent one of the side walls, the edge of that side wall being extended inwardly in the plane of the wall and then bent backwardly upon Vthe bent portion ofthe inner wall to provide a fiat inwardly projecting ledge of substantial size, the outer face of which is in line with the outer face of the said side wall, and metallic strips removably secured to the outer faces of said ledges to clamp the edges of wire cloth solely to said ledges.

In a structure of the character,v described, a frame consisting of top, bottom and side members, cach of said members being constructed of sheet metal bent to tubular form with its edges bent inwardly and interloclred to provide ledges about the inner walls otjthe tubular frame members, and a transversely-extending cross-member constructed of sheet metal bent to channel form with its side edges projected upwardly and downwardly, a metallic strip closing the open side of said cross member with its side edges clinched to the upwardly and downwardly projecting side edges of said channel vmember to provide ledges on the upper and lower side of said member, and 3Q means for clamping Wire cloth toouter faces of, said ledges, p

In a structure of the character described, a door frame consisting of top, bottom and outer and inner side members, U- shaped sheet metal extensible members adjustably secured to the top member and outer side member of said frame for the purpose 'of increasing or decreasing the dimensions of said door, the adjacent ends of said 99 extensible members being overlapped, and a U-shaped plate adjustably mounted on one of 'said extensible members and straddling the same at the point of juncture of said extensible members to cover thespace left ai the corner on both sides of said door when said members are extended.
5. In a structure of the character described, a door frame consisting of top, bottom and outer and inner side members, sheet 100 metal U-shaped extensible members embracing the outer and top frame members, each of said extensible members being provided with a series of slotted openings, means extending through said slotted openings for clamping the same in different positions of adjustment to said outer side member and top member, and a U-'shaped plate adjustably mounted on one of said extensible members and straddling the same at no the point of juncture of said extensible ,members to cover the space left at the corner on bothsides of said door when said members are extended. j t
