Description

C.-GONRAD. 1 Box; or Carrier forBottled Liquor.
nc. 210,240. Patented N0\?.,26, I878.
INVENTORI N.FETER3. PHOTO-LITHOGI VAPHER. WASHINGTON. DV 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARL CONRAD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES OR CARRIERS FOR BOTTLED LIQUORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,240, dated November 26, 1878; application filed October 3, 1 878. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL CONRAD, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented an Improved Box or Carrier for Bottled Liquors, of which the following is a specification:
My invention'is a box or carrier in which sample bottles containing liquors can at all times be accompanied with the necessary de- "ices to open said bottles and to test their contents, and, further, by means whereof the said filled bottles and devices can be the better protected, handled, or used.
I will first fully describe my said invention, and hereinafter point out the novel features thereof in the claim. 7
Of the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved carrier or box, part of the front being removed to show interior parts. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the parts when the lid is removed.
A represents a box of card-board, wood, metal, or other material. I make the box A of suflicient size to accommodate in an upright position four bottles. B represent sample bottles containing beer, wine, or other liquor.
To protect the bottles and prevent same from jostling against each other, I insert each in a pocket or nest, b. (Seefigures) The nests b consist of felt or other flexible material, bent cylinder shape, the top and bottom being left open, and so that each bottle can be readily inserted or withdrawn from each nest.
I am aware that heretofore bottled liquors have been packed in flexible nests to afford protection to said bottles; but my improvements consist as follows: I arrange in the box A at least four bottles so packed in nests b, and utilize the space above the shoulders and between the necks of each bottle to contain the devices generally used to open the bottle and test its contents-t. 6., a tumbler and cork-screw. Further, I lay stress upon the peculiar construction of the parts now to be described, that protect the tumbler from jostling against the bottles and prevent fracture.
As shown in Fig. 1, in height each nest 1) extends abovethe shoulders of each bottle and forms the bearing-edges b, which support the tumbler, and also the upper nest.
c is a glass tumbler. c is the upper nest of the same material as those below.
As shown in the figures, the glass tumbler is placed between the necks of the bottles, the bottom of the tumbler resting upon the upper edges, 1), of the nests b. The upper nest, c, envelops the sides of the tumbler, and in this condition is placed between the necks of the bottles, said nest being also supported by the bearing -edges 12. (See figures.) By these means the direct contact of the glass tumbler with the bottles is prevented at any point, the upper nest protecting said tumbler from striking against the necks, and the bearing-edges 12 supporting the bottom of said tumbler away from the shoulders of the bottles. 0 is an ordinary cork-screw, its hiding-place being in the tumbler. c is a layer of flexible material, placed top of the parts in the box, so as to keep said parts in place when the cover or lid is closed. 0 is the lid. 0 is the bail .or handle.
The filled sample bottles and devices packed in my sample box are thus fully protected and placed together in a better condition to be handled and used.
By the use of my invention many inconveniences, loss of time, and extra labor can be avoided, and otherwise it possesses advantages especially important to traveling salesmen. For liquor merchants in general it is a handy, commodious, and desirable means for using sample liquors.
What I claim as my invention is- As an improved article of manufacture, a sample box, A, having the bail c and lid 0, the lower nests, 'b b b 1), containing bottles B, the nest 0, supported top of said lower nests and between the necks of the said bottles, by means whereof the same, together with the devices to open said bottles and test their contents, are packed in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
CARL CONRAD.
