Patented Nov. 30, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WATER CLOSET Application November 4, 1935, Serial No. 48,115
7 Claims.
This invention relates to seats and covers for water closets, an object of the invention being to provide a toilet seat and cover in which the seat is completely concealed by the cover when not in use and in which the cover is rounded and so shaped that its general contour blends with that of the bowl.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toilet seat cover which can be made of relatively thin sheet metal such as pressed steel or other metal and which possesses the requisite strength and rigidity.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toilet seat cover which is so shaped as to enclose the seat when it is down and whose under surface has a substantially fiat non-recessed portion which serves as a back rest when the cover Other objects of this invention will appear in the following description and appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my novel toilet seat and cover mounted on. a water closet with portions of the seat and cover broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with part of the cover broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section through the seat and the edge of the cover on the line'33 of Fig. 2 taken in the direction of the arrows.
Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation, and it is not intended to limit the invention claimed herein beyond the requirements of the prior art.
The preferred form illustrated herein by way of example, consists of a seat I and cover 2 pivotally mounted on a water closet bowl 3 by means of a pair of brackets 4. The bowl may be of any conventional type, the one shown herein being of generally round exterior contour. The brackets 4 have horizontal collars 5 which are adapted to rest on the upper surface of the bowl at the back, and depending stems 6 which project down through vertical holes in the back of the bowl. The ends of these depending stems are threaded and nuts I are screwed onto them to securely fasten the brackets to the bowl. The upper part of the brackets extend forward and carry inwardly directed horizontal axially alined pivot pins 8 upon which are mounted the seat I and cover 2.
The seat I may be made'of any suitable material, such as Wood, metal, Bakelite or other plastic or composition material, and is supported on the pivot pins 8 by means of brackets 9 screwed to the bottom of the seat at the back and extending out from under the seat and cover to the brackets 4. The rear ends of the brackets 9 lie between and against the sides of the upper ends of the brackets 4 and are journalled on the pins 8. The cover 2 is composed of three pieces of pressed or stamped sheet metal, a top Iii, a back rest H and a reinforcing member I2, fitted together and covered with a layer E3 of Bakelite, Celluloid, pyroxylin or other suitable plastic composition or coating material. The top of the cover extends over the seat and down all around it so as to completely conceal the same, the downturned edge of the top being approximately level with or just a little lower than the bottom surface of the seat I. The back rest H has a central flat portion 14 which, when the cover is down, fits into the hole in the seat and is level with the downturned edge of the top. The peripheral portion l5 of the back rest arches up over the seat and extends down around the outer marginal side of the seat in contact with the inner surface of the top thereby reinforcing the latter. The edge of the sheet of metal forming the top is curled inwardly and upwardly into a bead l6 into which the edge ll of the back rest projects, thus securing the back rest and top together. This bead extends around the rim of the cover from near one of the brackets 4 outward and forward around the front of the cover and back along the other side, terminating near the other bracket 9, thereby leaving a space at the back of the seat between the two brackets 4 into which the reinforcing member I2 fits. The reinforcing member is a piece of sheet metal stamped or pressed to flt against the inside of the depending rim of the cover at the back. Thus, the top, the back rest and reinforcing member provide three layersof sheet metal for the attachment of the brackets l8. The brackets have bosses l9 which lie against the inner faces of the brackets 9 and fit over the ends of the bearing pins 8. The bosses IS, the ends of the brackets 9 and the ends of the brackets 4 are complementary to each other and form a single smooth shape having a pleasing streamlined contour. Two notches are formed in the depending edge at the back of the cover 2 at the side of the brackets l8 through which the brackets 9 extend from the seat I to the pivot pins 8. On the inside of and near the front of the cover and on the bottom near the front of the seat are two pairs of resilient bumpers 2i and 22 adapted to contact the top of the seat and the top of the bowl, respectively. The cover and the bowl are so shaped that the front and side edges of the cover are above and closely adjacent to the front and side edges of the top of the bowl and the rear edge of the seat is close to the top surface of the bowl. The cover and bowl thus form one artistic whole with the surface of one forming a substantial continuation of the surface of the other and the seat completely closed and hidden when not in use. The front edge of the cover, however, may project slightly beyond the bowl so that the fingers may more easily grasp it when it is desired to lift it.
While I have described and shown in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not intend to limit myself thereto. The shape of the seat cover and bowl may be varied within wide limits and the type of and position of the pivots may also be changed. For example, instead of having brackets at the rear of the seat and cover, a pair of integral nesting extensions may be provided at the rear of the seat and cover arranged as shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 43,315, filed on October 3, 1935, and the surface around the front of the bowl may be an exact continuation of the surface of the cover.
I claim:
1. A cover for a water closet comprising a top member having a depending edge adapted to enclose a toilet seat, and a hollow back rest portion nested within said cover engaging said depending edge and adapted to project into the opening of said seat.
2. A cover for a water closet comprising a convex top member having a depending rim adapted to project down around the edge of an annular toilet seat, and a sheet metal insert member within said top member cooperating with said rim and having a hollow central back rest portion offset downwardly from said top member.
3. A cover for a water closet comprising a convex top member having a depending rim adapted to project down around an annular toilet seat, and a sheet metal insert member within said top having a central back rest portion offset downwardly from said top and a peripheral channel portion connecting said back rest portion with said top.
4. A cover for a Water closet comprising a top member having a depending rim adapted to project down around a toilet seat and a sheet metal back rest member within said top having a central flat portion spaced from said top and a peripheral portion connecting said fiat portion with said top, said peripheral portion fitting against the inside of the peripheral portion of the top and being secured thereto.
5. A cover for a water closet comprising a convex top member having a depending rim adapted to project down around an annular toilet seat, and a sheet metal back rest member within said top having a central flat portion spaced from said top and a peripheral portion connecting said fiat portion with said top, said peripheral portion fitting against the inside of the peripheral portion of the; top and being secured thereto by a bead formed on the edge of the top and enclosing the edge of the back rest member.
6. A lid for a water closet seat comprising a sheet metal top and a sheet metal insert member nested together, said insert member having an arched peripheral portion adapted to fit over and conceal the seat when the lid is in closed position and a central fiat portion providing a back rest when the lid is in open position.
'7. A lid for a water closet' seat having a central opening, comprising a sheet metal top and a sheet metal insert member nested together, said insert member having an arched peripheral portion adapted to fit over and conceal said seat when the lid is in a substantially horizontal position, and said insert member having a central substantially flat portion spaced from said top and adapted to project into said seat opening when the lid is in said substantially horizontal position, said central portion providing a back rest when the lid is in a substantially vertical position.
