DROPPING BOARD AND ROOST FOR POULTRY Filed March 25,1957 2 SheetsShe'et 2 a f I 7 7 Inventor Hs/gsrf By Zhfik Attorneys Patented Nov. 30, I937 J UNITED srA'rs Pur m-amt? DROPPING BOARD AND noos'r FOR POULTRY Frank Brodie Herbert, Westwood, N. J. Application March 25, 1937, Serial No. 133,060 '1 5 Claims. (01; ire-22)v This invention relates to dropping boards and roosts for poultry and more particularly to the provision of means for collecting all droppings or excrement to the end that a sanitary and healthful condition may be maintained at substantially all times.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection V with the accompanying drawings wherein:'-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through a-henhouse showing my invention embodied therein.
.Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line '22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3lis a top plan view of the invention.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of one end portion of a main dropping board.
Figure 5 is a similar viewof an auxiliary or ex- 7 20 tension dropping board.
Referring tothe drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that in accordance with the present invention there are provided a main dropping board 5 and one or more auxiliary drop- 25 ping boards 50.
c The board 5 is formed preferably entirely of metal and comprises the board proper 6 consisting of a single sheet of metal formed at one end to provide an integral roll accommodating trough 30 l and at a relatively opposite end to provide a vertical upstanding foot plate or'flange 8. Reinforcing bars 13 are connected to the under face of the board 6 at the edges thereof and one end of each bar is bent downwardly at right angles to 35 form'the leg 12 which is braced by the bar l4 which has one end connected with the leg l2 and its other end with a part of the horizontal portion of the bar 13. The opposite end of the bar 13 is bent into ar-cuate shape to fit around thetrough 1 and is then carried upwardly to form a securing bracket 9 which is perforated to receive the fastener l which enters the wall ll of the henhouse. The bracket has a horizontal part 2! extending partly over the trough and this part 2| has a perforation therein.
The trough 1 is adapted to accommodate a roll l of tar paper or the like A portion of the roll of tar paper I5 is extended over the dropping 50 flange 8.
For each dropping board there is provided a roost indicated generally by' the reference numeral l6 and comprising a pair of side rods ll' 65 that extend through openings provided therefor board 6 and at'its free end is draped over the' in a plurality of relatively spaced transverse rails i1 and a transverse end rail I8.
The bars! 1"are provided with spaced openings'to accommodate the parallel portions of a plurality of longitudinally extending and laterally 5 spaced, substantially'U-shaped wire rods 39 which have the sides or legs thereof atthe open end of the Us suitably secured in the end rail I 8. These rods form a screen for preventing the fowls from getting on the dropping boards and eating any 10 material, that may happen to be on rsuch boards.
At the free end thereof the side rods H 'are formed to present integral hooks Z53 vthat engage in the apertures provided in the lugs 2! on the upper ends of the brackets 9. V x ii J 1 15.
The end rail 18 is provided in the bottomedge thereof with a groove 22-that receives the flange 8 in a manner clearly shown in Figure 1 and tof hold the free end ofthe sheet l5 draped over said flangeB; r 7' Obviously, when it" is desired to remove the extended portion of the sheet B'so that a clean section of the roll 15 may be brought into position covering the dropping board 6 roost I6 is swungupwardly to a position substantially paralleling 25 i the wall ll whereupon the used part of the sheet l5 may be folded upon itself with the droppings being thereby wrapped therein, and obviously incidental to thefolding of this used portion'of thev sheet a new? or unused section of the sheet may be paid out from the rollrl5 to extend over the surface of the dropping board 6. ;When the used. portion of the sheet'llihas been thus folded, it may be torn from the'roll and the 'free endro'f theroll thusformed-then'draped over the flange 8' after which the roost i6 is lowered to a hori-. zontal position with the groove 22 receiving the sheet draped flange 3 so that the extended section of the sheet l5 will be held in a smooth condition 0 covering the surface of the dropping board '6. 40 7 Thus it will be seen that the sheet of tar paper for the like will protect and serve to maintain f clean the dropping board 6, and that as each section of the roll is used it may be quicklyand easily removed to the end that the henhouse wi1l be clean and healthful substantially at allrtimes.
The number of auxiliary or extensiondropping boards 5;; usedwill of course depend upon the length of the henhouse. Each auxiliary or exten siondropping board 5a is also formed of metal and comprises the dropping board proper 6w formed from a sheet of metal and providedat one end withanrintegral receiving trough 1a and at a relatively opposite end'with' an upstanding" flange or foot board 8a; Also secured to the board Ed at the under side thereof and adjacent one longitudinal edge only is a reinforcing bar or metallic strap 13a which at one end is formed to provide at the end 8a of the auxiliary or extension drop board a supporting leg 12a, while at its opposite end the strap- !3a is formed with an arcuate portion to accommodate the trough Ia and also with an integral bracket portion 3a.
formed with an integral apertured lug Zia.
As shown in Figure 3 where a plurality of dropping boards are used, as for example where a main dropping board 5 and one extension or auxiliary dropping board 5a are used the free longitudinal edge of the board 6a is arranged in overlapping relation to the adjacent longitudinal edge of the main dropping boardfi, and the lapped and overlapping edges of said boards are secured together by bolts or the like 23. Also for supporting the trough-equipped end la of the auxiliary or extension drop board in conjunction with the bracket 9a is a bracket 24 that is secured to the henhouse wall H through the medium of a fastening element such as a screw or the like 25, and the bracket 24 is disposed in abutting relation. to the adjacent bracket 9 of the. main dropping board 5 and is provided with an arcuate lower portion 26 to accommodate the trough end 10.. of the auxiliary board and at its upper endv is provided with an apertured integral lug 21 cooperating with the lug Zla for supporting one end. of a roost I6 disposed for use in conjunction with the auxiliary dropping board.
It will be also understood, and as shown, that for each auxiliary dropping board there is alsov provided a roll 28 of tar paper which is used in conjunction with thev auxiliary dropping board in the same manner in which. the roll" l5 of tar paper is used with the main dropping board 5.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-
