L. B. PATRICK WAGON OR TRAILER BODY WAGON BED Filed Oct. '7, 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Ill #6 3 7 L. Faint/6 Patented Oct. 18, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application October 7,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a body or bed for use on a wagon, trailer or otherwise and it aims to provide a construction whereby the body is convertible into various forms and shapes so that a single wagon body may be advantageously used for various purposes in connection with which different shapes of bodies have been or are found advisable.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings-'- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the body having supplemental side and end boards;
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the body of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the use of second supplemental side boards;
Figure 6 is an end view of the form of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 5;
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view through a body employing parts to hold the supplemental sides in extended horizontal position;
Figure 9 is an end elevation showing an end elevation with a supplemental body built-up on the form of Figure 8;
Figure 10 is a transverse sectional view through a body of the form of Figure 9; and
Figure 11 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line llll of Figure 9.
Referring specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, my improvements are associated with a conventional or any wagon body consist ing of a floor l side boards I l and end boards l2, the side boards and bottom being secured together in any suitable manner and mounted on a wagon or other vehicle in any manner preferred and preferably having cross sills l2 and cleats I3 extending therefrom and fastened to the side boards II. The end boards I2 are preferably vertically slidable for application and removal, being held in place by guides I4. Removable bolts or rods l preferably extend through the side boards H and across the end boards l2, the same being detachable and having a single nut l6 screwed thereon.
In carrying out the invention, supplemental 1937, Serial No. 167,848 (Cl. 296-13) side boards are provided at I! in connection with supplemental end boards l8. The supplemental side boards I! have hinge hook members 19 suitably fastened thereto at 20 which are detachably engaged in eyelets 2| of bars 22 fastened at 23 to the side boards II. Such structure pivotally mounts the'hooks proper 24, of the hinge hook members l9 in the eyelets 2i and also pivots them in the eyelets 2| A cotter key 25 may be passed through an opening in one of the hook members 24 to prevent accidental detachment of the supplemental side boards IT.
The last mentioned side boards have spaced guides at 26, like those at l4, between which the end boards I8 are removably slidable. Rods or bolts 21, like those at I5, are adapted to be passed through the supplemental side boards l'l, being removably held in place by nuts 28 thereon.
Second supplemental side boards are provided at' 29 in cooperation with second end boards 30. Said second supplemental side boards 29 are provided with stakes 3! which extend below the lower edges of the side boards 29. The latter are adapted to removably rest on the upper edges of the supplemental side boards I! and the stakes detachably slide into pockets or brackets 32 fastened to the supplemental side boards l'l.
Said end boards 30 are vertically removable and detachable, being slidable between guides 33 on the supplemental side boards 29. Long hook members 40 are pivoted at M to one of the supplemental side boards 29 and are detachably engageable in eyelets 42 of elongated rods 43, pivoted at 44 to the companion supplemental side board 29.
As shown in Figure 8, all of the supplemental side and. end boards may be discarded with the exception of the side boards I'I. Such side boards IT, as shown in Figure 8 may be moved into horizontal positions outwardly of the wagon body, being swung to such positions on the hooks and eyelets 24 and 2|. It will be noted that the construction of said hooks and eyelets is such as to provide a space, in the condition of Figure 8, between the upper edges of the side boards II and the adjacent portions of the side boards I! so that bars 45 may be removably passed through such spaces, resting on the upper edges of the side boards II and supporting the supplemental side boards ll.
supplemental side boards 29 on the side boards I! at a right angle with the stakes 3| removably extending through the pockets or brackets 36.
In the latter form, modified supplemental end boards 48 are used, the same being detachable, and having irregular lower edges so as to fit and rest on the supplemental side boards I! and the upper edges of the side boards I I. The aforesaid hooks 40 and rods 43, in the present relation may engage hooks 49 suitably arranged on the end boards 48.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A body of the class described having main side walls, supplemental side walls selectively disposable vertically and horizontally, means at the top of the main side walls pivotally connecting the main side walls and the adjacent supplemental side walls together, means to hold'the supplemental side walls against displacement in their vertical position, pockets on the supplemental side walls, second supplemental side walls, said second supplemental side walls having stakes detachably engageable in said pockets to secure the second mentioned side walls above the first mentioned supplemental side walls, bar means disposable on the main side walls and passable through said pockets to support the first mentioned side walls in horizontal position, said bar means having pockets at the ends thereof to receive the said stakes in the horizontal position of the first mentioned supplemental side walls.
2. A body of the class described having side walls, supplemental side walls hinged thereto so as to assume horizontal positions outwardly thereof when raised above their upper edges, said supplemental side walls also being disposable vertically, pockets on the supplemental side walls for engagement by stakes to support additional walls above the same, and bar members removably disposed transversely of the supplemental side walls between the same and said edges to support the supplemental side walls in horizontal position, said bar members extending through said pockets.
