Description

Patented May 19, 1925.
uN T ssrAr Es PATENT OFFICE;
COMBINATION STOCK'ANID" HAY RACK.
Application filed June 30, 1928.
construction in which either stock or hay,
or like products, may be transported. Further and more specific objects will be disclosed in the following specification, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a rack embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the rack, \vith a portion thereof broken away.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear end view of the rack.
Fig. 4; is a detail sectional view on the line 4l in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing more particularly and by reference characters, 5 designates the side boards of a wagon box, having cross-pieces 6 upon which are laid floor boards 7. The side boards 5 are preferably secured to the two end cleats 6 by L-bolts 8, whose ends are respectively secured in the side boards and cleats by nuts 9 and 10. The short ends of the bolts are secured in holes in the side boards so that any size or height of boards can be accommodated by the same bolts. The vertical portion of each bolt 8 passes through an angle-iron 11, which passes under the adjacent side board, and has a. vertical projection 12, engaging the side thereof, thus insuring a rigid connection between the cleat and the side board.
The upper outer surfaces of the side lmards 5 are provided with stake pockets 13, in which may be placed the stakes 14 of side frames 15, when the structure is to be used as a stock rack.
hen. itis desired to haul hay, or the like, the frames 15 are removed from the pockets 13 and an auxiliary rack is placed and secured upon the side boards. This rack consists of a series of cross members 16 which rest upon and extend beyond the side boards 5. The ends of the members 16 are provided with ockets 17 to receive the frame stakes Serial No. 648,793.
14, and may have a few side floor boards 18 to close the gap between the frames 15 and the side boards 5.
The two cross members 16, at the ends of the rack, are secured in place by hooked members 19, which are adapted to engage under the pockets 13, and have vertical slats 2O slidably engaging bolts 21 secured in the members 16. A cam member 22 is pivoted, as at 23, to each member 19, and is provided with a slot 24, also engaged by the bolt 21. Each cam member is provided with a finger piece 25, and the bolt 21 is provided with a thumb nut 26, so that when the cam member is pulled inward it will pull the hook member 19 up into rigid engagement with the adjacent pocket, in which position the parts are readily secured by tightening the nut 26. The cross members 16 are also provided with cleats 27, which engage against the inner sides of the side boards 5.
It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the device as herein shown and described, provided, however, that such modifications come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims. Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with the side boards of a rack and stake pockets arranged thereon, of an auxiliary rack having transverse cross members adapted to rest on said side boards, and means for detachably securing said cross members to said stake pockets.
2. The combination with the side boards of a rack and stake pockets arranged thereon, of an auxiliary rack having transverse cross members adapted to rest on said side boards, and be secured thereto, and cleats arranged upon the cross members for engagement against the inner sides of the side boards.
3. The combination with the side boards of arack and stake pockets arranged thereon, of an auxiliary rack having transverse cross members adapted to rest on said side boards, and hook members adjustably arranged on the cross members for engagement with the stake pockets.
4. The combination with the side boards of a rack and stake pockets arranged thereon, of an auxiliary rack having transverse cross members adapted to rest on said side boards, hook members, arranged on the cross members, for engagement with said pockets,
and means for raising said hook members to tighten th cross members against said side boards.
5. The combination with the side boards of a rack and stake pocket-s arranged thereon, of an auxiliary rack having transverse cross members adapted to rest on said side boards, hook members, arranged on the cross members, for engagement with said pockets, and cam acting levers arranged to lift said 10 hook members, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JULIUS J. STROMBERG.
