WATER TANK COVER Filed April 11, 1936 INVENTOR 'iffww WATER. TANK COVER Carl C. Isaacson, Chicago, 11]., assignor to L0 J. Sladek, Chicago, Ill.
Application April 11, 1936, Serial No. 73,826
ICiaim.
, This invention relates to covers for water tanks for water closets and the like, and the principal objects are to provide a novel cover of 'neat and attractive appearance and which cannot be easily broken or otherwise damaged; to provide a cover'having storage space wherein toilet articles or the like may be stored and to provide a closure for the storage space; and to provide a cover of economical manufacture and which will not be subject to rusting or other deterioration in use.
A selected embodiment oi the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. '1 is a perspective view showing my novel cover installed on the water tank of a water closet;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover and showing the lid in open position; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Referring to the drawing, 4 is the open top water tank for a water closet 5. A selected form of my novel cover 6 is arranged in closing position on the top of the tank and includes a bottom wall 1, side walls 8 and 9, end walls l0 and II, and a lid I2. The upper edge of the side wall 9 has spaced recesses l3 therein and the pintle bearings ll of the flap hinges l5 are mounted therein. One leaf of each hinge is brazed, welded, bolted, riveted or otherwise secured to the underside of the lid l2 slightly inwardly of the rear edge thereof and the other leaf of each hinge is fast in a similar manner to the outer side of the side wall 9. When the lid is pivoted to open position, the rear marginal edge thereof outwardly of the hinges engages the side wall 9 and retains the lid in upstanding position.
The cover is held against displacement by flange lugs I 6, one of such lugs being brazed, welded, bolted, riveted, or otherwise secured to the underside of the bottom wall 1 inwardly of each of the ends thereof. These lugs are p0- sitioned to engage the inner sides of the side walls of the tank 4. Another of the lugs I6 is suitably secured to the underside of the bottom wall I substantially midway between the ends thereof and is spaced inwardly from the front edge of the bottom wall. This lug is adapted to engage the inner side of the front wall of the water tank. If desired, an additional lug could be suitably secured to the bottom wall 1 in substantial alignment with the lug spaced from the front edge thereof, and this additional lug would be located'to engage the rear wall to this end, in the illustrated (Cl. H8)
of the water tank. However, since the rear wall of the tank is usually fast to a wall, such additional lug is not ordinarilyneeded.
Preferably, the space enclosed by the walls of the cover is divided into compartments and 6 form of the cover a partition I! is provided which includes foot portions l8 brazed, welded, bolted, riveted or otherwise respectively secured to the inner sides of the side walls 8 and 9 substantially medially 10 in the extent thereof. Another partition 20 is provided which divides one of the compartments defined by the partition IT. The partition 20 includes footportions 2| which are respectively secured in a suitable manner to the partition l1 l6 and the end wall ll. Additional partitions may be provided and the partitions may be arranged to divide the space enclosed by the walls of the cover in any desired manner without departing from the purview of my invention. The parti- 2o tions may be omitted if desired and not be secured to the walls of the cover, in which case the partitions would be readily removable.
.I have shown a cover wherein the forward edges are bevelled to correspond with the bevelled corners on the tank. It is to be understood, however, that the corners may be made square, rounded, or may be shaped otherwise, as desired, but preferably the outline of the cover will correspond to the outline of the tank. The dimensions of the cover and the location of the lugs on the bottom wall are determined by the dimensions and wall locations of the tank. However, since tanks of the kind to which this invention appertains are more or less standard, the covers may be made up in standard sizes and shapes and hence need not be made specially for each installation. Hence my invention may be used in place of the ordinary cover on tanks already in use or may be furnished with new tanks.
The cover is made of rust-proof material such as copper, brass or chromium-plated steel or the like. It may be finished as desired to correspond or contrast with the finish of the tank or with the decoration of the room in which it is used.
Since it is necessary to raise the lid to have access to the compartments in the cover, the likelihood of placing articles on the cover is mitigated and damage to the closet by articles falling off the top of the tank is to a great extent obviated as is the danger of articles falling off the top of the tank and into the closet from which they may pass into the plumbing system and stop it up. Instead of articles being placed on top of the cover they will be placed in the convenient storage space or compartment provided by the cover and consequently it is not likely that such articles will fall oil. The cover is readily detachable since it is only necessary to lift it to disengage the lugs to permit removal thereof and aiiord access to the mechanism within the tank.
I have described a selected form of my invention but it is to be understood that this is capable of variation and modification and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claim.
I claim:
A cover for closing the open top of a water tank for a water closet 'and comprising a bottom wall of substantially the same shape and size as the outside of the top of the water tank whereby said bottom wall may be rested'on the top of the tank, side and end walls projecting upwardly from the bottom wall and providing a storage space in the cover, a plurality of partitions dividing the storage space into a plurality of compartments, the body 01- said partitions having foot portions at the ends thereof bent at an angle thereto, the foot portions on one of said partitions engageable with opposite side walls of said cover and the foot portions on the other of said partitions engageable one with an end wall and the other with said first mentioned partition, a lid hinged to the cover for closing the top of the compartments, and lugs on the bottom of the cover and spaced inwardly from the edges thereof to engage the inner sides or the Walls of the tank to removably retain the cover in closing position on the top of the tank and whereby said cover walls are in substantial alignment with the tank walls.
