In shaving with'a' straight edge razor, or with one of 1 ordinary safety type, it is difficult to effect an even, smooth contact of the blade with the 7 face. throughout the entire'length of the blade, because of the unyielding and'rigid connection between the blade and handle,-:.whereas rotary movement of the blade or in the connection be tween blade and handle, would permit the automatic adaptation of the blade to the facialcontours; desirable for smooth and comfortable shaving. a I V ,J r 1 V It is, therefore, the object of our invention to provide a razor having such advantages.
It is also anobject of our .invention to provide a razor embodying such improvements, wherein the working parts are inclosed to protect the same from water, soap or foreign matter that might tend to prevent smooth operation "or rustingzof the parts.
Our invention can be adapted foripractically" all types of safety razors, but in-accoinplishing the above and other objects, we haveprovidedimin assembled condition with part of the handle being broken awaytoillustrate theautomatically adjustable connection in-the handle member;

To use the automatically adjustable handle with blade carriers having male adapters, the adapter 25 need only be removed and the male adapter of the blade carrier screwed into the female of head 26.
Assuming the parts to be constructed and assembled as described, the operation thereof is as follows:
The assembled handle comprising the shank 20, the tie rod 4, the bar 5, body portion I, block mechanism and cover, is screwed into a blade carrier by means of the adapter and the razor is ready for use.
For general use, rotary movement between the handle and the blade carrying unit is desirable, but in trimming a moustache a rigid and unyielding razor is necessary By moving the slide l8 away from the blade carrier, the key l3 may be moved to enter the space 12 and prevent rotary movement'of the bar 5, as well as the shank 2!) and blade carrier, thereby preventing rotary movement of the razor and producing a rigid and unyielding razor.
For shaving other parts of the face, and the upper lip when the user is clean shaven, a limited amount of rotary movement between blade and handle 'is'desirable and is effected by moving the slide l8 toward the blade carrier. This action removes the key from the space l2'and allows movement of the bar 5, tie rod 4, shank 20 and consequently the razor blade carrier, so'that the blade will yield to and follow the natural contours of the face to produce a smoother shave than with ordinary devices.
The working parts of the device are kept dry and clean due to the extension of the cover I6 from the end of the bar 5 to well up on the shank 20, thereby preventing clogging, rust and unnecessary wear.
In sharpening some razors of the self-strapping type, it is evident that an angled or cross'stroke of the blade on the strop will more readily even the blade and eiTect a keener and sharper edge, and the razor is adjusted for limited rotary movement so that the blade carrier will be drawn across the strop at an angle when moved in one direction and at an opposed angle when moved in the opposite direction, to produce a finer edge by the cross stroke.
While we have described the razor as being used only on the face, it is evident that women can use the razor for shaving their legs and under the arms, it being advantageous to use a razor embodying our invention for that purpose.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. A razor including a cylindrical handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in and projecting from the ends of the bar, a stop member keyed to one end of the rod, and a blade carrier keyed to the opposite end of the rod.
2. A razor including a cylindrical handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in and projecting from the ends of the bar, a stop member keyed to one'end or" the rod, a blade carrier keyed to the opposite end ofthe rod, and means on the facing ends of the bar and stop member for limiting rotary movement of the rod and blade carrier.
3. A razor including a cylindrical handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in and projecting from the ends of the bar, a stop member keyed to one end of the rod, a shank keyed to the opposite end of the rod, and a blade carrier removably mounted on said shank. a
4. A razor including a cylindrical handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in and projecting from the ends of the bar, a stop member keyed to one end of the rod, a blade carrier keyed to the opposite end of the rod, anda latch for selectively keying the rod to the bar.
5. A razor including a cylindrical handle bar,
a tie rod rotatable in and projecting from the ends of the bar, a stop member keyed to one end of the rod, a shank keyed to the rod, a blade carrier removably mounted on said shank, and a cover enclosing the bar, the-stop member and a portion of said shank.
6. A razor including a handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in the handle bar and projecting from the ends thereof, a stop member fixed on one'end of the rod, and a blade carrier mounted on the opposite end of the bar, facing endsof the bar and stop member having projecting segments adapted for edge contact to limit rotation of the bar.
'7. A razor including a handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in the handle bar and projecting from the ends thereof, a stop member fixed on one end of the rod, a blade carrier mounted on the opposite end of the bar, facing ends of the bar and stop member having projecting segments adapted for edge contact to limit rotation of the bar, and a latch for keying the bar to the stop member to prevent rotation of the blade carrier.
8. A razor including a handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in the handle bar and projecting from th'e'ends thereof, a stop member fixed on one end of the rod, a blade carrier mounted on the opposite end of the bar, facing ends of the'bar and stop member having projecting segments adapted for'edge contact to limit rotation of the bar, the bar having a longitudinal groove and a latch bar slidable in said groove for projection into the space between the edges of said segments to lock the rod to the bar.
9. A razor including a handle bar, a tie rod rotatable in the handle bar and projecting from the ends thereof, a stop member fixed on one end of the rod, a blade carrier mounted on the opposite end of the bar, facing ends of the bar and stop member having projecting segments adapted for edge contact to limit rotation of the bar, a tubular cover for the bar, the stop member and a portion of said shank, having a longitudinal slot, a latch bar slidable on said bar for projection between the edgesoi said segments, and a slide on the cover member having a pin extended through said slot and attached to said slide.
10. Arazor of the character'described including a blade carrying member, a handle member positioned at right angles to the blade carrying member, means including a freely rotatable'pivotal connection between the blade carrying member and the handle member whereby the blade carrying member has free lateral oscillatory movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the handle member, and stop means for limiting the extent of oscillatory movement of the blade carrying member relative to the handle member.
