MOTOR GOVERNOR Filed Oct. 24, 1936 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 Attorneys Patented Nov. 16, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2' Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in' motor governors and particularly to improvements of devices of this character for controlling the speed of internal combustion engines, and particularly when the engine is that of a motor car.
An object of the invention is to provide a governor for controlling the supply of fuel from the carburetor to the internal combustion engine and which governor is operatively connected with a part of the speedometer driving mechanism to the end that the supply of fuel will be regulated in consonance with the speed of the vehicle.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the application of the invention and with certain parts broken away.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the governor assembly.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are detail sectional views taken substantially on the lines 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5 respectively of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a throttle valve.
Figure '1 is a perspective view of a link.
Figure 8 is a view of a shaft forming part of the centrifugal governor assembly and showing the manner of connecting one end of the shaft with a flexible shaft.
Figure 9 is a view showing the connection between the speedometer drive shaft and the'fiexible shaft of the speedometer on the one hand, and between the speedometer drive shaft and the flexible shaft forming part of the invention.
Figure 10 is an elevational view of the speedometer drive shaft.
Referring to the drawings by'reference numerals it will be seen that 5 indicates generally an internal combustion engine, 8 the carburetor and 8 the propeller shaft.
In accordance with the present invention the speedometer drive shaft indicated by the refer ence numeral 9 has its respective opposite ends I 0 and II journaled in bearing bushings I2 and I3 threaded into the propeller shaft housing l4 at the top and bottom of the latter. The shaft 9 is driven from the propeller shaft through the medium of gearing l8 and 11.
The ends l8, ll of the shaft 9 are bored to provide sockets and are also longitudinally slotted as at l8 and [9.
The reference numeral 29 indicates a flexible shaft connecting the shaft 9 with the speedometer, and the shaft 28 is provided with a rigid part 2| that fits within the end ll of shaft 9 and is provided with a lateral lug 22 that engages in the slot I9 to retain the shaft end 2| and the shaft 9 coupled together against relative rotative movement.
Further, in accordance with the-present invention a flexible shaft 23 has on one end a rigid extension 24 that fits within the end H) of shaft 9 and extension 24 is provided with a lateral lug 25 that engages in the slot 18 in a manner to v retain shaft end 24 and shaft end In coupled together against relative rotative movement.
Adapted to be clamped between the flanges 26, 21 of the inlet neck of intake 1 and the outlet neck of the carburetor 6 respectively is a body block 28 which is preferably of the edge contour suggested in Figure 2 and is provided at its laterally enlarged end with openings 29 to receive the bolts 39 that serve to secure the enlarged end of the body block 28 between the flanges 28 and 21.
At said enlarged end the block 28 is provided with an opening 3| that aligns with the carburetor outlet neck and the inlet neck of the intake 1 for the passage of fuel through the opening from the carburetor into the intake manifold I.
Pivoted or swingably mounted within the opening 3| is a butterfly valve 32 one end of the shaft of which extends into an elongated socket or recess 33 provided in the plate 28.
The plate 28 is also provided with an enlarged opening 34 and also with abore 38 that extends between the opening 35 and the recess 38 and a bore 31 that extends from the opening 35 to the adjacent end of the body block 28.
A governor shaft 38 has a working fit within the bore 36 and at one end is operatively connected through the medium of a link 39 with an arm 48 provided on that end of the throttle valve shaft 32 that extends into the recess 33.
A governor shaft 4 I has a working flt within the bore 31 and secured on one end of the shaft 4| through the medium of set screws 42 is a collar 43 to which are secured through the medium of set screws 44 one end of governor arms 45.
Slidably retained on one end of the shaft 38 between collars 46, 41 is a sleeve 48 to which the governor arms 45 are secured as at 49.
Intermediate their respective opposite ends the governor arms 45 are provided with weights 50.
Axial movement of the shaft 4| through the bore 39 is limited through the medium of a stop flange 5i and a collar 52, the latter being secured at the desired adjustment on the shaft M through the medium of a set screw 53. Disposed on the shaft between the collar 43 and the stop flange it is a spacer sleeve 54.
At its free end the shaft M has a squared portion 54 which fits within a squared socket 55 provided on one end of the aforementioned flem'ble shaft 23. i
From the above, it will be seen that the drive will be transmitted from the propeller shaft 8 of the vehicle to the speedometer driving shaft and from the shaft 9 to the speedometer through the flexible shaft 20 and also from the shaft 9 the drive will be transmitted to the shaft ti of the governor through the flexible shaft 23.
Obviously as the speed of the vehicle increases the weighted governor arms 45 will fiy outwardly under action of centrifugal force causing the shaft 38 of the governor to move toward the shaft M. This movement of the governor shaft 38 is transmitted through the link 39 to the shaft of the throttle valve 32 causing the latter to move toward a. closed position. As the speed of the vehicle decreases governor shaft 38 will be urged in a reverse direction causing the throttle valve 32 to gradually move toward an open position. Thus it will be seen as the speed of the propeller shaft increases the supply of fuel to the engine is gradually reduced for causing a reduction in the speed of the engine. Consequently, a governor embodying the features of the present invention will permit the engine or motor to make use of all of its power until the vehicle is in motion when the governor will then act in consonance to the speed of the aoeaeec vehicle to control the supply of fuel to the engine to preclude the driving of the vehicle in excess of a predetermined speed.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantage of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. The combination with a speedometer drive shaft of an internalcombustion engine, of a fiat plate-like member secured in position in the fuel feed line of the engine and having a fuel passage extending therethrough, a throttle valve mounted in said passage for controlling the supply of fuel one end of the member projecting outwardly from the engine and having an opening therein, and a driving connection between the throttle .valve and the speedometer shaft, said driving connection including a centrifugal governor mounted in said last named opening'for controlling the opening and closing of'the throttle valve in response to the speed of the speedometer shaft.
'2. In combination with a speedometer drive shaft of an internal combustion. engine, of a fiat apertured plate like member positioned in the fuel feed line of the engine, a throttle valve rotatably mounted in one of the apertures of the member, and a driving mechanism including a centrifugal governor mounted in the other aperture of the member and having operative connection with the throttle valve and with the speedometer drive shaft.
