gwwntoz,
- 1 I I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN MILLER, OF REPUBLIC, OHIO.
ens SAVER.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALLEN L. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Republic, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Gas Saver, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines, and more particularly to a novel means designed for automatically supplying air to the engine, the quantity of air being regulated by the movements of the spark controlling rod to retard or advance the spark.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary air supply having connection with the engine through the intake manifold, the auxiliary air supply being connected thereto, at a point between the carburetor and engine cylinders.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily applied to the usual motor vehicle construction now in use, it being unnecessary to alter the construction of the motor vehicle, to any great extent to supply the device.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a fragmental elevational view of an internal combustion engine and controlling levers, showing the invention as applied.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the casing of the attachment, showing the same as applied to the steering post of the motor vehicle.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the dash board of a motor vehicle through which the steering post 6 extends, the gas and spark control rods being indicated at 7 and 8 respectively, the same being disposed in parallel relation with the steering rod.
The attachment comprises a casing formed Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 17:, 1922. Application filed April 28, 1921. Serial No. 465,299.. I
of the opposedsections. 9 and 10, each; of which sections 7 is ,provided with lateral flanges, apertured to receive the securing bolts 11, which secure the sections to the steering. post.
The sections 9 and 10 are provided with cooperating cut out portions to permit the sections to be secured around the steering post and control rods of a motor vehicle. suitable opening is formed in the'lowe'r section 10, and accommodates the pipe 12 which has one end thereof extending through one wall of the intake manifold 13 of the engine, to communicate with the interior thereof. The opposite end of the pipe 12 extends at right angles as at 14 and is disposed within the casing of the device, the flared extremity 15 of the pipe 12 providing the intake for the pipe to admit air to the manifold 13.
Secured to the spark control lever 8, is an adjustable cam 16 which is secured in its position of adjustment on the rod 8 as by means of the set screw 17 which passes through an opening in the cam 16 and frictionally engages the rod 8 as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing. Cooperating with the intake end of the pipe 12 is a valve member 18 which is carried by the pivoted arm 19 that has connection with one wall of the casing, as by means of the screw 20 which also forms the pivot for the arm 19.
This arm 19 is of a length to extend beyond the right angled end 14 of the pipe 12 p where the same is engaged by the cam 16, and since the arm 19 is held into engagement with the cam 16 as by means of the spring member 21, it will be seen that movement of the spark control rod 8 andcam 16 will result in a relative movement of the arm 19 to open and close the intake extremity of the pipe 12.
In the use of the device the cam ,16 is adjusted so that when the spark control rod is moved to the limit to retard the spark, the arm 19 will be automatically moved so that the valve member 18 will close the intake end of the pipe 12 and cut oil the admission of air to the intake manifold 13,-through the auxiliaryair supply. It will be seen that when p the spark is advanced the cam automatically moves the arm 19 against the tension of the spring 21 to unseat the valve member 18 admitting air to the pipe 12 and intake manifold 13.
It is to be understood that by adjusting sectional casing, a supply pipe extending into the casing and havmg a flared extremity, an arm pivotally supported within the housing, a spring member secured within the housing and adapted to normally urge the arm towards the flared extremity of the pipe, at yalve member carried by the arm and adapted to cooperate with the flared end of 15 the pipe to control the passage of fluid therethrongh, and a" cam contacting with the outer end of the arm for moving the same away from the flared end of the ,pipe.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 20 as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature 1.11 the presence of two witnesses.
