lPatented Nov. 2, 1937 My present invention relates to boxes or cartons made of fibrous material, such as double faced kraft board, and.' more particularly to an improved box or carton made from a single blank of material.
In fabricating boxes or cartons from sheet material, such as paper, kraft board, or the like, it is desirable that the blank from which the box or carton be made, should be as nearly rectangular as possible, in order that the waste of material be kept to a minimum. With the present day necessity for hand holds in boxes and cartons of any considerable size, the waste of material has increased despite the fact that a rectangular blank may be used. Also, as the cutting and scoring of the blank is done by a die structure, the necessary cutting and stripping devices for blanking out openings for hand holds has materially increased the cost of the boxes or cartons, besides materially slowing down the production thereof.
In my present invention, I have obviated the objections to prior methods of manufacturing boxes or cartons, and have succeeded in making a box or carton of pliable fibrous material, such as double-faced kraft board, from a rectangular blank, and cut and score the blank by a simple die, and avoid entirely the necessity of any cutout portion that would require blanking out and stripping devices as a part of or accessory to, the die structure.
In carrying out my invention, I utilize a rec tangular blank, cut and scored to define the various elements of a box or carton, and by folding the various elements into proper position and 35 relation to each other, produce a box or carton in which the sides and ends thereof are double reinforced, and in which hand holds are automatically formed by folding reinforce elements into engagement with the ends of the box, and which elements interengage with themselves and with the reinforce for the sides of the box or carton, to thereby prevent displacement regardless of the load within the box or carton.
An object of my invention therefore, is an improved box or carton made from a blank of fibrous material.
Another object of my invention is an improved box or carton made from a blank of sheet material and having a hand hold formed therein during the assembling thereof.
Still another object is an improved box or carton made from a blank of sheet material and being reinforced about its sides and ends, and in which the reinforcing elements are mutually interlocked.

Referring to the drawings, Ill designates a blank, made from any suitable flexible sheet material, such as cardboard, double faced kraft 20 board, and the like. Centrally located in the blank I0, whichis rectangular in form, is a box or carton bottom II, defined by the scored lines I2, I3, I4 and I5. The bottom II may be of any desired shape, but preferably rectangular. 25 Formed of the blank I0, and at the opposite ends of the bottom II, are the box or carton ends I6 and I1, the end I6 being separated from the bottom II by the scoring I2, and the end I'I being likewise separated by the scoring I4. Formed at 30 the ends of the box or carton end I6 are wings I8 and I9, such wings being triangular in shape and divided from the end I6 by a scored line 20, in alignment with the scored line I3, and a scored line 2|, in alignment with the scored line I5, 3 respectively. Formed at the ends of the box or carton end I'l are wings 22 and 23, similar to the Wings I8 and I9, these wings 22 and 23 being Ydivided from the end II by the scored lines 24 and 25 respectively, the scored line 24 being in 40 alignment with the scored line I3 and the scored line 25 being in alignment with the scored line I5. f
Formed of the blank I0 and divided from the bottom I I by the scored line I3, is a box or carton 45 side 26, of a length equal to the length of the bottom II, and of a Width equal to the width of the box or carton ends I6 and I'I. Formed of the blank I Il is a box or carton side reinforce 21, divided from the box or carton side 26 by the 50 scored line 28 which is parallel to the scored line I3. The width of the reinforce` 21 is substantially equal to that of the side 26 and the length is slightly less than the length of the side 26. `At one end of the side 26 and divided therefrom by 55 2 the scored line 29 is ahand hold member 38, this member being separated from the wing I6, during the dleing operation of forming the blank I6, by a line of cut 3|. Formed integral with the hand hold member 30 and separated therefrom by the scored line 32, is a locking member 33, this locking member being spaced apart from the endof the reinforce 21 by the cut-out 34.
At the opposite end of the side 26 is arranged the hand hold member 35, divided from the side 26 by the scored line 36, and from the wing 22 by the line of cut '31. Integral with the hand hold member 35 and divided therefrom by the scored line 38 is the combined reinforcing and locking member 39 that is spaced from the reinforce 21 by the cut-out 40.
The arrangement of side, reinforce, handholds and locking members just described is duplicated on the opposite side of the bottom II, the other side being designated 4I, the reinforce attached thereto 42, the scored line between the side and reinforce being 43, the handhold members being designated 44 and 45 respectively, divided from the side 4| by the scored lines 46 and 41 respectively. The hand holds 44 and 45 are separated from the wings I9 and 23 by the lines of cut 48 and 49 respectively. Attached to the hand hold member 44 and divided therefrom by the scored line 50 is the locking member 5|, this member being spaced from the end of the reinforce 42 by the cut-out 52. Attached'to the hand hold member 45 and divided therefrom by the scored line .53 is the locking member 54, this member being spaced from the end of the reinforce 42 by the cut-out 55.
In the side member 26, centrally thereof and adjacent to the scored line 28, is a slot 56 through which may be passed a strap forming a handle for the box or carton to be constructed from the' blank I8. A similarly situated like slot 51 is formed in the side member 4I.
58 designates a strap or handle, preferablyl and may be fastened to the sides 26 and 4| by staples 59, or in any other convenient manner. An alternative type of fastener is shown in Fig. 3, where a metal clip or hook 60 is shown attached to one end of the strap 58, the hook being adapted to engage with the lower edge of the reinforce members 21 and 42.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be noted that the blank I is rectangular and the only material wasted from the sheet of material fromwhich the blank is formed is the space adjacent to the hand hold members 30, 35, 4'4 and 45, the locking members 33, 39, and 54, and the cut- outs 34, 40, 52 and 55. Also, it will be noted that no portion of the blank I0 necessitates the cutting out of material by a complicated die structure. The blank I0 therefore, may be produced by a simple die, without appreciable Waste and at a minimum cost.
Assuming the blank I8 to have been formed as above described, and that it is desired to assemble the same into box or carton form, one of the ends, as the end I1, is folded about the scored line I4 into a position perpendicular to the bottom II, and the wing 23 is folded about the scored line 25 into a position perpendicular to the end I1, and the bottom II, as shown in Fig. 2. A similar operation is then performed with respect to the end I6, and wing I9. The side member 4| is then folded about the scored line I5 into a position perpendicular to the bottom II and into engagement with the now outer faces of the wings 23 and I9.
The reinforce 42 is now folded about the scored line 43 into a position within the box or carton and into parallelism with the side 4|, this operation resulting in enclosing the wings 23 and I9 within the side 4| and reinforce 42.
Similar operations are then performed on the wings 22 and I8, the side 26 and reinforce 21.
To complete the box or carton structure the hand hold members are folded about their respective score lines 20, 2 I, 24 and 25 to bring such members into position against the outer face of the ends I6 and I1, after which the locking members 33, v 5I, 39 and 54 are folded into position against the inner face of the ends I6 and I1. This latter operation is clearly shown in Fig. 3, where the locking member 54 is shown in its final position against the inner face of the end I1, and with its outer edge locking the reinforce 42 in position. Also, the locking member 39 is shown in Fig. 3, in position preparatory to folding into final position, and it will be apparent that when it is in final position, it will lock the reinforce 21 in its final position, and the locking members 54 and 39 willengage with each other so as to prevent accidental displacement of the parts.
Referring again to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the hand hold members 44 and 38 engage with each other to assist in holding the parts in proper position and these members cooperate to produce an eflicient hand hold, the resiliency of the material, such as double-faced kraft board, readily permitting the insertion of the fingers of the hand of the operator between the hand hold members and the outer face of the end.
There is thus produced from a rectangular blank, a. box or carton in which the sides and ends are reinforced, and in which hand holds, formed integrally with the material of the box or carton, are arranged at opposite ends of the box or carton.
' Referring now to Fig. 4, there is shown in plan view a top blank, made from a sheet of fibrous material, preferably double-faced kraft board, and comprising a top 62, rectangular in form and of a size to make a suitable cover for the box or carton illustrated in Fig. 3. This top 62 is provided at its ends with end members 63 and 64, divided from the top 62 by scored lines 65 and 66 respectively. Formed integral with the material of the ends 63 and 64 and divided therefrom by scored lines 61 and 68 respectively, are locking andreinforce members 69 and 16 respectively.
On the sides of the top 62 are arranged sides 1I and 12 divided from the top by scored lines 13 and 14 respectively. These sides 1| and 12 have i attached at their ends extensions 15 and 16 divided from the sides by scored lines 11. Centrally arranged in the top 62 and extending transversely thereof is a slot 18 and through which may extend the strap or handle 58. The blank from which the top is cut is rectangular in shape and no cut-outs, other than the slot 18 and the space between the sides of the extensions 15 and 16 and the ends of the sides and reinforces 63, 64 and 69 and are necessary. None of such cut-outs necessitate the use of a stripping device on the die, and therefore, the die is of simple character and the blank is produced rapidly and without waste of material.
In forming the blank shown in Fig. 4 into the box or carton top shown in Fig. 5, the sides 1| and 12 are folded on the scored lines 13 and 14 respectively, into a position perpendicular to the top 62, the extensions and 16 are folded on vthe scored line`1-1 perpendicular to the sides, after nun) which the'ends' 63 and 6l are folded on the scored lines 65 and 66 into engagement with the extensions 'I5 and 1B. The reinforce members 69 and I0 are then folded on the scored lines 61 and 68, thus clasping the extensions 15 and 16 against the inner face of the ends G3 and. respectively.
'Ihe resulting cover, when put on the box or carton shown in Fig. 3, has the slot 'I8 positioned over the strap or handle 58 and such handle, projecting through the slot 'I8 may be used as a means for carrying the box or carton.
The blanks from which the box or carton and cover are made, maybe 'assembled at the factory and shipped to the customer ready for use, or may be shipped at to the customer, who may assemble them as needed.
I claim.

A box of pliable material formed from a single blank and having sides and ends, a reinforce member for each of the sides, and a hand hold member and a combined end reinforce and locking member formed integral with the sides at each end thereof, and the combinedend reinforce and 1 locking members at each end of the box folding into a position adjacent to each other against the inner face of the box ends and occupying the entire space between the side reinforce members and having adjacent edges engaging each other and opposite edges engaging the side reinforce members, whereby to lock the side reinforce members-in position and themselves against displacement, the hand hold members at each end of the box folding into a position against the outside of the box, to form a hand hold, the hand hold members being locked in position by the end reinforce members.

A box or carton made from a single blank of pliable sheet material and having sides and ends, reinforce members for the sides formed integral therewith and adapted to fold about the upper edge of the sides to a position within the box and against the inner face of the sides, and members formed integral with and at each end of each of the sides, such members comprising a hand'hold member and a combined reinforcing and locking member, the handhold members at each end of the box foldingagainst theouter face of the box end 'and constituting a hand hold, and the reinforcing and locking member folding into position against the inner face of the box end, such locking members abutting against each other and against the reinforce members for the sides to thereby hold the reinforce members in position and the locking membersagainst displacement.

A box or carton made from a single blank of pliable sheet material -and having'sides and ends, hand hold members for the ends of the box formed integral with and at each end of the sides, the hand hold members at each end of the box being folded into position adjacent and parallel to the outer f ace of the box end, and the lower edge of each hand hold member being cut away o'n a line extending from the lower corners of the box end to a point slightly below the middle of the upper edge of the box end, and a locking means for s aid hand hold members formed integral therewith and arranged against the inner face of the box ends, with their adjacent edges in engagement with each` other, and their opposite edges in engagement with the sides of the box.
7. A box of pliable sheet material formed from a single blank and having sides and ends, and reinforce members formed integral with the sides, said reinforce members, when in operative posi- `tion, filling the space between the sides of the box, with their adjacent edges abutting each other', and with their opposite edges engaging with the sides of the box, whereby accidental displacement of the reinforce members is prevented.
