This invention relates to improvements in sleeping garments and it pertains particularly to sanitary sleeping robes for infants, providing a maximum of comfort and protection.

Various forms of sleeping robes for infants have heretofore been devised, but many of the types previously known have frequently been unsatisfactory because of lack of complete comfort for the infant or because of their failure to insure at 3 the same time adequate covering for the infant,

complete freedom of movement, suiiicient circulation of air within the garment, etc.

It isan object of the present invention to provide a new and improved sleeping garment, par-.

1 ticularly designed for infants.

A further object of the invention relates to infants sleeping garments providing complete comfort and sanitation, ample space to permit free movement of the infants arms, legs and body while at the same time maintaining the infant adequately covered.

A preferred form of garment is illustrated in the drawing in which:

Figure 1 illustrates the sleeping garment in open position, and fastened to a crib or bed, and

Figure 2 shows the garment after the infant is placed therein and the garment fastened in position.

Referring to the drawing, the garment comprises a back panel l0, preferably extending the full length and width of the garment, to which is attached an upper front panel II which is attached at its top and side edges to panel l0, thereby permitting free motion of the infants arms between the panels I0 and II and under the infants head. A neck opening l2 which may be provided with a suitable soft binding tape I3 is located in the front panel at a point sufficiently below the top edge of panel H to allow the infants head to rest on the panel H while permitting the infant to stretch its arms under panel II and to cross its hands and arms under its head without being uncovered.

Panel II is divided from the opening 12, preferably down to its bottom edge l4 to permit the infant to be inserted into the garment, the portions 15 and H5 adapted to be closed by snap fasteners I l and H3, or other suitable fastening devices, so as to hold the infant in place and to cover at least the upper portion of the infants body from its neck downwardly.

Along the side edges and bottom edges of the back panel II] are attached covering panels l9 and (Cl. 5-343) V l adapted to be detachably secured along their inner edges by suitable fasteners, for example, interlocking members 2i, adapt-ed to be detachably drawn together by cam bail 23 so as to fasten the panels to and 29 together at their meeting edges.

Overlapping panels l5 and lS'may be extended so as to overlap panels l5 and 29 respectively whereby to cover the fastening devices 2t and fasteners ll and I8, if desired.-

When the sleeping robe is completely secured about the infant, the panels 58 and 2E! overlap the panel I! above the upper portion of the infants body, thereby providing a double blanket covering while allowing the infant free movement between panel I! and panels l9 and 2B.

23, 26, 25 and 26 are attachedto the'sleeping garment, preferably at the meeting edges of the front and back panels, for attaching the garment to a bed or the like (asv shown in Figure 1) and thus insuring that the. garment will be maintained in proper position.

when itisdesired to place the infant in posi-- tion in the garment, fasteners 11 and I8 and also fasteners 2! are disengaged, thereby permitting the infant to be readily placed in the garment. Fasteners 11, I8, and 2| are then fastened in closed position, leaving the infants head free to move on panel I! and permitting free movement of the infants arms in all directions while maintaining them completely covered. Due to freedom of movement between panel I l and panels I8 and 20, the infant can kick or raise his feet and legs freely, while at the same'time air is circulated into and within the robe by passage of the air between the panels I! and I9 and 20, by virtue of the relative movement of panels l9 and 20 with respect to panel I I, providing at the same time adequate covering for every portion of the infants body.

It will be understood that slits may be provided at opposite sides of the neck opening l2 to permit the infant to extend its arms therethrough to grasp a bottle, toys, etc., the said slits being provided with detachable fastening devices and/or an overlapping element to overlie the slits,.if desired.

It will further be understood that the garment may be provided with a sanitary lining adapted to be positioned under the infant, if desired.

In addition, the back panel may be made completely detachable from the front panels by means of detachable fasteners, although it is preferred that the panels be permanently stitched or otherwise permanently secured together along the edges of the back panel.

While the invention has been described with respect to one preferred embodiment, it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of considerable modification as to various details without departing from the spirit thereof.

I claim:

1. A robe adapted for use as a sleeping garment for infants comprising a. back panel, an upper front panel attached at its upper and side edges to said back panel and provided with an opening positioned substantially below its upper edge,'said front panel being divided along a line extending downwardly from said opening to form edges provided with detachable fastening means, said upper front panel furthermore extending downwardly a sufficient distance to cover a substantial portion of the childs body, a lower front panel attached at its lower and side edges to theback panel and being free to moverrelative to said upper front panel, said lower front panel being divided along a line extending downwardly from its upper edge to form edges provided with detachable fastening means, said lower front panel overlapping said upper front panel when fastened in position whereby to provide adequate covering for the infant while permitting freedom of movement.

2; A robe adapted for use as a sleeping garment for infants comprising a back panel, an upper front panel attachedto said back panel and pro vided with an opening positioned substantially below its upper edge, said opening being provided with detachable fastening means for permitting i an infant to be readily placed in position in the robe and for securing said infant, said upper front panel extending downwardly a sufficient distance to cover a substantial portion of the child-s body, a lower front panel attached to said back panel and being free to move relative to said upper panel, said lower front panel overlapping said upper front panel when an infant is in covered position whereby to provide adequate covering for the infant while permitting freedom of movement.

3. A robe adapted for use as a sleeping garment for infants'comprising a back panel, an upper front panel attached to said back panel and provided with an opening for permitting an infant to be inserted into the robe, said upper front panel extending downwardly a sufficient distance to cover a substantial portion of the childs body, a lower front panel attached to said back panel and being free to move relative to said upper front panel, said lower front panel overlapping said upper front panel when an infant is in covered position whereby to provide adequate covering for the infant while permitting freedom of movement.

4. A robe adapted for use as a sleeping garment for infants comprising a back panel, an upper front panel attached to said back panel and provided with a neck opening,isaid upper front panel extending downwardly a sufficient distance to cover a substantial portion of the child's body, a lower front panel secured to said robe and being free to move relative to said upper front panel,.

said lower front panel overlapping said upper front panel when an infant is in covered position whereby to provide adequate covering for the wardly a suinoient distance to cover a substantial portion of the childs body, said lower front panel overlapping said upper front panel and being adapted to move relative to said upper front panel 7 along a substantial portion of its width when the robe is in closed position over the infant whereby to permit free movement of the infants body while providing adequate covering and circulation of air into and out of said robe between said upper and lower members.
