Description

Oct. 19, 1937. c. J. JOHNSON CHICKEN COOP Filed April 6, 1936 Patented Oct. 19, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE CHICKEN COOP Tex.
Application April 6, 1936, Serial No. 72,866
4 Claims.
This invention relates to a coop.
An object of the invention is to provide a coop for the confinement of chickens and the like that will provide protection against the invasion of rats and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a coop of the character described that may be sealed at night against the invasion of rats and the like, and may be opened when desired to provide a limited additional space for the exercise of the poultry or other stock confined in the coop.
Another object of the invention is to provide a coop of the character described having a section for the confinement of the brood ban and an additional space for the baby chickens, when poultry is being confined, to provide exercise for the baby chickens, but preventing the escape of the brood hen.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention relates to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a front elevational view, with partsbroken away,
Figure 2 shows a horizontal sectional View, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 shows a plan View of the invention, in extended position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral I designates a coop body, preferably composed of wire screen. Mounted on the coop body by suitable rivets are the cleats 2, 2 which support the vertically slidable door 3. The coop body I has the roof 5, composed of sheet metal or the likeand which extends beyond the coop body, forming eaves. Detachably mounted on the roof 5 and the metal flooring B is the surrounding shield I, composed of flexible sheet metal or other suitable material. The shield I is detachably secured to the body I by means of the pins 8, B which are inserted through corresponding holes in the roof 5 and bottom 6. The body I is held in position with relation to the roof 5 and flooring 6 by means of the ribs 9 and suitable bolts I0.
When in closed position the shield l is wrapped around the body I and the pins 8, 8 are dropped into position through suitable holes in the roof 5 and through the loops I I, I I at the ends of the shield 'I, the ends overlapping, thus forming a solid wall against invading insects and the like and forming a protection against inclement Weather. There is a free space of approximately one inch, or more if desired, between the top of the shield I and the roof 5 to permit a free flow of air into the coop.
The coop, when in extended position, will have the shield I removed and fastened to the body I by means of the pins 8, 8, through the loops II, II, in the manner shown in Figure 3. The door 3 is equipped with a suitable grip I2 for moving the door into the desired position to permit the escape of the occupants of the coop. If, for example, the coop is occupied by chickens and a brood hen, the door may be elevated into position to permit the escape of the little chickens, but prevent the escape of the brood hen. The chickens will thus have access to the additional space provided by the shield 'I, but will be prevented from becoming lost or straying beyond the limits of the shield, as well as being protected from rats and similar invaders.
The drawing and description disclose what is now considered to be a preferred form of the invention by way of illustration only, while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A coop of the character described having a flexible sheet metal shield, a roof on said coop, said roof being of greater diameter than said coop, openings in said roof, the ends of said shield being formed into eyes and pins adapted to be inserted through said openings and said eyes to hold the shield in position.
2. In a coop, a body formed of ribs and screen wire secured on said ribs, a top and bottom thereon, an adjustable door on said body, a sheet metal shield adapted to surround said body when in one position and to form a pen in front of said body when in another position, openings in said top, loops in the ends of said shield, and pins adapted to fit through said openings and loops to hold the shield in position.
3. In a coop, a body formed of ribs and foraminated material secured to the ribs, a top and. a bottom on the body, an adjustable door on the body, a shield formed of thin material adapted to surround said body when in one position and to form a pen in front of said body when in another position, said top and the ends of the shield having bearings and pins adapted to fit through said bearings to maintain the shield in position.
4. A structure of the character described comprising a metal top and bottom, said top having openings, a slidable door, a flexible surrounding shield having eyes and pins adapted tobeinserted through said openings and through corresponding eyes in said shield for detachably securing the shield to said structure.
