Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP]? MADLENER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE STOPPERS FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,490, dated October 29, 1878 application filed June 1, 1878. Q
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIPP MADLENER, of the city of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopper-Holders for Bottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the accom panying drawingrepresents a perspective view of my fastener device whenclosed or locked. Fig.2represents a similar view, showing the bottle-stopper unseated. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the stopper, taken through the arms, and Fig. 4: represents a vertical section of the same, taken at right angles to the arms.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device for pressing bottle-stoppers firmly into the mouths of bottles, and securing the same therein'in a substantial manner, so that they cannot be forced out by the pressure of gas generated within the bottle; and consists in an elbow-joint lever, which is secured to both the neck of the bottle and the stopper in such a manner that when the stopper is inserted in the mouth of the bottle a downward pressure upon the lever will cause the stopper to be pressed firmly therein, and at the same time the device will be thrown in a locking position, so that an upward pressure upon the cork will have no tendency to release the fastener, all of which is more particularly describedby reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- A represents the bottle. B is the stopper, to which is secured a metal ring, 0. The ring 0 may be either located within the stopper, as
shown, (when the stopper is made of rubber or like material,) thus giving strength to the flange D of the stopper, and preserving it in its original shape, or when an ordinary cork is used for a stopper it may simply rest upon it.
The ring 0 is provided with pivots E, to which the lever F is attached and by which the stopper is pressed and held in the bottle. G are the short arms of the lever-F, which extend upward at an obtuse angle with the lever F, to the upper end of which arms are pivoted the rods H, thus forming an elbowjoint. The rods H are eachprovided with shoulders I, which engage against the bulge of the neck of the bottle, and are held in such position against the bulge by the wire J, which surrounds the neck of the bottle.
An upward pressure exerted against the lever F causes the arms G to descend outwardly, and the pressure-upon the stopper is released. Further pressure against the lever F causes the stopper to unseat and swing outwardly upon the arms H and Ga'way from the bottle-mouth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rubber bottle-stopper B, having the flange D and ring 0 cast therein, provided with bearings E, substantially as specified.
2. The lever F, having bearings E and arms G extending upward at an obtuse angle with the lever F, and rods H, having shoulders I, pivoted to the upper end of 'the arms G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP]? MADLENER. Witnesses:
K. SHAWVAN, CHARLES BEYER.
