CORK REMOVING DEVICE Filed Jan. '9, 1936 Invent":
Patented Sept. 21, 1937 UNITED STATES CORK REMOVING DEVICE Wilhelm Bohler, Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany Application January 9, 1936, Serial No. 58,326 In Germany January 24, 1935 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a device for removing cork stoppers from bottles.
According to the invention, means are provided for gripping the outer circumference of the cork and removing it without visible damage. The greater the efforts are to move the cork the more firmly will it be held by the device.
By Way of example, the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a section of the device disposed within the neck of the bottle and gripping the circumference of the cork; Fig. 2, a partial side view of the device; and Fig. 3, a View of the free end of the device seen from below.
Referring to the drawing, the cork removing device comprises a thin-Walled conical sleeve of resilient material provided at its free end with slots 2 to insure safe gripping of the cork 3. At the upper end of the sleeve I bores 4 are provided for equalizing air pressure during gripping and removal of the cork 3. The sp-ringy ends of thesleeve I possess partly inwardly directed bends 5 inclined to form a pitch for preparatorily gripping the cork 3. In the intermediate zone of the sleeve I ridges 6 of continuous spiral formation are provided which grip the cork 3 with increasing firmness.
The sleeve I is centrally secured to a handle 'I and depends therefrom.
When a cork is to be removed for instance from the neck of a wine bottle, the sleeve I, by means of the handle I, is inserted between the neck 5 of the bottle and the cork 3 and given a turn to cause the bends 5 of the springy ends of the sleeve I to cut into the cork 3 and to carry along the free end of the sleeve I until the ridges 6 grip the cork 3 and While compressing it draws 10 it into the sleeve I. As the sleeve I is disposed between the neck of the bottle and the cork 3, pressure of the cork against the wall is largely reduced, whereby the removal of the cork is facilitated.
I claim:--
A device of the character described for removing cork stoppers from bottles, comprising a handle and a centrally arranged removing member depending therefrom, said member comprising a 20 conical sleeve of thin-walled resilient metal, split longitudinally at its free end and having its intermediate zone provided with gripping ridges of continuous spiral formation.
