PACKAGE AND CONTAINER THEREFOR Filed Aug. 12, 1936 Hg. ZAHIi/TJFH M a Patented Sept. 7, 1937 PATENT orries PACKAGE AND CONTAINER THEREFOR Ellsworth G. Nichols, Somerville, Mass, assignor to E. F. Kemp, Inc.; Somerville, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application August 12, 1936, Serial No. 95,612
4 Claims.
This invention relates to packages of confectionery or the like and it has for its object to provide an attractive and ornamental package of the class described. It is also an object of this invention to provide'an improved container for holding and displaying a pluralityof confectionery units each of which latter includes a wrapper of sheet material having end portions twisted to form ornate rosettes, one at each end of the unit, such as is shown and described in U. S. Patent No. 1,815,261 granted July21, 1931.
' To these ends I have provided the ornamental and attractive package and improved container therefor, as set forth in the following description, the several novel features of the invention being separately pointed out and defined in the claims at the close thereof.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a package of confectionery constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the container forming part of the package illustrated in Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the container shown in Fig. 2.
Figure 4 shows the cardboard leg or prop member forming part of the container shown in Figs. 1 and 2. 7
As herein illustrated my new package includes a container in the form of a box comprising a bottom wall I0 and four side walls including a pair of oppositely disposed end walls ll, H and a pair of oppositely disposed side walls [2, l2.
The oppositely disposed walls ll, H and the bottom wall ID are integral parts of a single rectangular cardboard blank, the latter being folded along two parallel lines so that the walls H, II are disposed perpendicularly with respect to the bottom wall.
Each side wall I2 is made from Wire and comprises a wire base member l3 and a plurality of bail-shaped wire members l5 and i6 secured to said base wire l3 by welding. The base wire 13 has its opposite end portions l4 bent at right angles to its intermediate portion and fitted against the inner sides of the walls II, II while said intermediate portion is straight and fits close to the top side of bottom wall In.
The bail-shaped wire members l5 and 16 are uniformly spaced apart in a longitudinal row to provide a row of tongues l5 and I6 alternating With slots l'l.
The two wire members 15 are disposed atopposite ends of the row and one leg of each is disposed upon the inner side of the proximate end wall H and is spot welded at 18 to member l3, while the other leg 2% is disposed upon the outside of said proximate wall It and serves as a spring jaw which cooperates with the proximate end portion 14 of the base wire l3 to grip or clamp said end wall it. The said end portion M is spot welded at E9 to the intermediate portion of the end member l5.
Thus each side wall consists of a row of upstanding wire tongues alternating with slots ll which extend approximately from the bottom to the top of the box, the slots of one sidewall being disposed relatively to the slots of the other side Wall so as to provide pairs of oppositely disposed slots adapted to be occupied by the neck 15 portions 2! of the twisted ends of the wrappers of confectionery units 22. The units 22 are stacked within the box as shown in Fig. l and also as shown and described in my co-pending application Serial No. 74,162, filed April 13, 1936.
Each side wall constructed as above described is provided at each end with a transverse slot 23 which is open at one end so that the proximate end wall can be slid into the same, and which is bordered on one side by a resilient wall-clamping- 25 jaw 20 by which the side wall is held against accidental displacement on the end wall.
When the package is to be utilized as a silent salesman on a store counter or the like the bottom wall may be provided upon its bottom side 30 with a prop 24. This prop may be made from a cardboard blank of the shape shown in Fig. 4, said blank being formed with two alined pairs of score or crease lines 25 and 26 defining two central panels 21 and 28 which are cemented to the 35 bottom'side of the bottom wall In as shown in Fig. 2 and with which two flaps or wings 29 and 30 are hingedly connected along the lines 25 and 26.
Adjacent to its middle the prop blank is made with a bail-shaped slit 3| whose opposite ends are coincident with the inner ends of the score lines 25 thus providing a latch tongue 32 of greater width than the panels 21 and 28. This latch tongue 32 is hingedly connected with the 45 inner end of panel 21 along a transverse score or crease line 33.
When the package is not in use all parts of the prop blank 24 lie flatwise against the bottom wall [0 which is a matter of convenience when storing or shipping the package, but when the latter is to be placed on display the two wings 29 and 30 are bent outwardly into positions where they are relatively parallel and perpendicular to the back wall l0. Then the latch tongue is swung out- 55 wardly into position to lock the two wings 29 and 3D in their operative positions as shown in Fig. 2.
The package can then be placed upon a counter or the like in an upstanding position as shown in Fig. l and presents a very attractive noticeable appearance, particularly when filled with confectionery units having colored twisted ends as in the patent above referred to.
What I claim is: p
1. A container of the character described-com prising a bottom wall, two oppositely disposed end walls and two oppositely disposed side walls, each of said side walls being made with a plurality of slots extending downwardly from the top thereof and disposed relatively to the slots of the other side wall so that said two side walls provide pairs of oppositely disposed slots within which confectionery units are stacked, and each of said side walls also being made from wire and having means at its opposite ends separably engaging the end walls so that said side and end walls mutually support each other.
2. A container of the character described comprising a single piece of stiif sheet material formed to provide a bottom wall and two oppositely disposed end walls and also comprising two oppositely disposed side walls each of which is made with a plurality of slots extending downwardly from the top thereof and disposed relatively to the slots of the other side walls so that said two side walls provide pairs of oppositely disposed slots within which confectionery units are stacked, and each of said side walls also being made from wire and having means at its opposite ends separably engaging the end walls so that said side and end walls mutually support each other.
3. A container of the character described comprising a single piece of stiff sheet material formed to provide a bottom wall and two oppositely disposed end walls, and also comprising two oppositely disposed side walls each of which is made with a plurality of slots extending downwardly from the top thereof and disposed relatively to the slots of the other side wall so that said two side walls provide pairs of oppositely disposed slots within which confectionery units are stacked, and each of said side walls also being made from wire and having spring jaws at its opposite ends engaging said end walls so that said end and side walls mutually support each other.
4. A container of the character described comprising a single piece of stiff sheet material formed to provide a bottom wall and two oppositely disposed perpendicular end walls, and also comprising two oppositely disposed side walls each of which is made from wire and comprises a longitudinal base wire having its opposite end portions bent upwardly and fitted against the inner sides of said end walls and also including a row of upstanding spaced apart bail-shaped wire members welded to said base wire which provide slots between them within which are stacked confectionery units, the two endmost members each embracing the proximate end wall and having one leg thereof disposed upon the inner side of said end wall and welded to the base wire and the other leg disposed upon the outside of said end wall and cooperating with the proximate upturned end portion of the base wire to provide a slot that is occupied by said end wall.
