Description
Aug. 10, 1937. E. FABER 2,089,601
VACUUM CLEANER Fild Oct. 16, 1956 Inventor:
' Patented Aug. 10, 1937 PATENT OFFICE aosasor vacuum CLEANER Ernst Faber, Stuttgart, Germany Application October 16,1936, Serial No. 105,980 In Germany September 25, 1935 2 Claims. 230-232) My invention relates to vacuum cleaners and more especially to a vacuum cleaner in which the motor blower unit is yleldingly supported in an intermediate casing surrounded by the outer 5 casing.
It is an object of my invention to provide a vacuum cleaner of the kind above defined, in which the sound is deadened more efliciently than in the vacuum cleaners hitherto suggested.
According to the present invention I provide an inner casing surrounding the motor blower unit, which is yieldingly arranged in the intermediate casing in such manner that the air current produced by the blower flows through the motor and after having left the. casing surrounding the motor blower unit, flows forwardly in the intermediate casing, and, after having escaped from it, flows in rearward direction in the outer casing until it escapes into the free air. This arrangement in combination with the particularly emcient cooling eflect which acts on the motor simultaneously from within and from without, results in a very efllcient deadening of sound which is due not only to the double yielding support of the motor blower unit, but quite particularly to the circumstance that the air in passing through the vacuum cleaner is imparted twice a reversal of direction while being repeatedly forced to pass through a reduced crosssectional area of passage and being alternately banked up and expanded.
I may still further improve sound by providing a bailie covering the air exhaust opening in the intermediate casing and preventing the air from impinging directly against the outer casing.
In the drawing affixed to this specification and forming part thereof a vacuum cleaner embodying my invention is illustrated in diagrammatic 4o axial section by way of example.
' In the drawing:
a is the outer casing, b is the, motor and c is the fan mounted on the motor shaft, these parts being enclosed in a unitary casing d, e, the part 45 d of which has an air inlet 1 in its front wall,
while the part c is formed withair exhaust the deadening of" openings g near its rear wall. The motor blower unit surrounded by the casing 11, e is supported by means of a rubber ring it at one end and a rubber ring i at the other end in an intermediate casing is, which is formed with air intakes m in its front wall and air exhaust openings 11 in its side wall, being yieldingly supported at either end in the outer casing a. To provide for such yielding supports, springs o extend from one end of the intermediate casing is, pulling this casing together with the, motor blower unit towards a rubber ring 1) which abuts against the outer casing a. 1
The air exhaust openings n of the1intermediate casing in are formed as a fine-meshed sieve, which is covered on the outside in a valvelike manner by a ring q made of felt, rubber or some other pliable material which is fixed to the sieve at its end adjoining the rubber ring p and allows the air to escape at the other end.
The directi'on of flow of the air is indicated by arrows.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I claim: 7
1. In a vacuum cleaner in combination, an outer casing, a motor blower unit, an inner casing enclosing said unit and having a central air intake formed at its front end, which surrounds said blower, and an air exhaust near its rear end. an intermediate casing enclosing said inner casing, said intermediate casing being formed with an air intake at its front .end and with an air exhaust in its circumferential part near its front end, and means for resiliently supporting said inner casing in said intermediate casing and said intermediate casing in said outer casing.
2. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, in which there is mounted on the intermediate casing a baiiie extending above the air exhaust formed on the circumferential part of said intermediate casing, said bai'iie being arranged to deflect the exhausted air rearwardly.
ERNST FABER.
