A. ZIERLEYN. Brooch-Fastening.
No; 208,875. Patented- Oct. 8, 1878.
mdzybuj UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ANTONI ZIERLEYN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MIOHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOCH-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,875, dated October 8, 1878; application filed May 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTONI ZIERLEYN, of the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooch-Fastenin gs, of which the following is a full and sufficient description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, in whichv Figure l is a perspective view of the spring used in my inventionwith the cross-bar thereto attached. Fig. 2 is a front or top view of my invention with pin clasped. Fig. 3 isa like View of my invention with pin removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my invention with pin unclasped, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my invention with pin clasped.
The nature of my invention relates to an improved device for preventing the accidental displacement of the pin in brooch and other fastenings; and consists in a metallic springplate applied to the back plate of the brooch, and attached at one end to the back of the brooch at the swivel-j oint, and extending across the back plate to the catch-hook. This spring bears upward against the pin when it is inside the catch-hook and faces the pin above the opening, thus preventing displacement. The spring is provided on its free end with a cross-bar having a groove therein, in which the pin rests while inside the catch-hook.
This device does away with the sharp edge projection in front of the swivel-joint, where the pin is fastened, as in the old mode of fastenin g.
In the accompanying drawings, the swiveljoint is shown by a, the pin by b, the spring %y s, the cross-bar by c, and the catch-hook In constructing my invention the spring .9, provided with its projecting cross bar 0, is fastened, by solder or otherwise, to the back of the brooch at the swivel-joint, and so set or shaped that its free end will press the pin firmly up against the catch-hook d, and hold it in place by a gentle pressure.
The cross-bar is designed to aid in fastening and unfastenin g.
By thisdevice the old sharp edge projection close to the joint is dispensed with, and all bearing or pressure on the pin is removed, except so far as is necessary in the ordinary use of the brooch, and hence the pin is less liable to break, while it is held firmly to its position by the spring.
What I claim is A metallic spring plate provided with a grooi'ed cross-bar, and attached at one end to the back plate of a brooch at the swivel-joint,
and extending across the back plate thereof to the catch-hook, and bearing upward against the brooch-pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ANTONI ZIERLEYN.
