Description
Claims.
The present invention relates in general to reenforced bail containers or pails and has particular reference to a pail or can construction which includes two body sections connected to- 5 gether in opposed side seams, such a pail or can having a bail operatively engaged in bail ears which are located in the side seams.
An object of the invention is the provision of a I. two-piece body pail having opposed side seams formed by interfolding of they edges of the adjacent body sections and having bail ears for the carrying bail which are disposed in the side seams and inter-engaged with the body wall to distribute the lifting strains brought upon the l5 bail ends, when the container is loaded with relatively heavy contents, and to throw such strains longitudinally of the side seams and with a minimum of distortion of the pail.
The invention contemplates the simple construction of a. reenforced tin or other metal pail or can and one important use for such a container has been found for holding jam or similar products which are poured into the pail while hot and in liquid form and the reenforcement obtained by this construction even when a relatively light gauge metal is used, permits the lled pail to be I lifted and moved while the contents is still liquid` with a minimum of distortion of the can and less probability of spilling of the contents. Such a construction also features a simple interlocking of the seam parts and the engaged bail ears in the body Wall without soldering or other reenforcement in the connection.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tapered pail or can embodying the present invention, a portion of the cover being broken away to disclose the location of the opposite bail ear within the side seam of the can;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail taken through a bail ear as viewed substantially along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles, i. e., as viewed along the line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail taken along the line 4--4 in Fig 2 and showing in section the body wall and side seam with the bail ear shown in plan.
In Fig. 1 there is disclosed a can or pail embodying the present invention which is formed with a two-piece body having body sections `II andl I2 joined together in two interlocked side seams I3. A bottom or can end I4 is secured in any suitable manner to the lower ends of the body sections. y
The upper ledge of the body may be curled over as at I5 and may be further reenforoed by a parallel encircling bead yI'B. A bail ear I'I is located in each side seam I3, the two'earsrbeing diametrically opposite to one another. A carrying bail I8 Yis provided `for lifting the container, `T0 ends I9 `of the'bail being engaged in the bail ears I'l.V
The opposite edges of the body sections II, I2 where they enter into the side seam I3 are formed with interlocking hook portions 2I (Fig. 4) which "15 are substantially tight without the use of solder to hold the contents ordinarily placed in such cans or pails. A'shellac orv other seam lining may be used if desired. The two wall sections II, I2 at the side seams I3 and near the top are out 20 through with openings 22 (Figs. 2 and 3) in which the bail ears I'I are located.
Each bail ear is preferably formed with a drawn body 23 connected with a base plate 24. A hole 25 is made in the outer wall of each bail ear body 25 by pressing in the center as at 25 to provide a pivotal seat 26 for the end I9 of the bail I8 this being a usual construction.
The bail ear is inserted in the opening 22 and is secured to the body wall in an interlocked con- 30 nection 21 formed by a joint interfolding of the adjacent body walls of the sections Il, I2, a flanged edge ofthe ear body 23 and a similar flange of the base plate 24 as best shown in Figs.
2 and 3. The bail ears thus provide a seal for 35 the openings in the canvwall, or more properly the plate 24 of each bail ear closes olf the opening in the side seams of the body wall sections.
The lifting strain of a filled container as thrown upon the carrying bail when the latter is in car- 40 rying position, is disposed along the reenforced side seams I3 which by reason of their interlocked structure provide the strongest resisting part of the body wall. By reason of this feature substantially heavy weights may be Carried in the 45 pail and liquids may be lled practically to the top of the bail and moved without fear of spilling from a distortion of the rim by lifting of the pail by its bail, the reenforoing bead I6 assisting in maintaining the rigid construction of the pail 50 under these carrying strains.
When it is desired to cover the pail a top or cover member 3i may be used. This cover mem- I ber is preferably formed with a anged wall 32 surrounding its periphery and when the cover 55 is applied to the can its wall 32 is frictionally engaged with the upper part of the body adjacent the reenforcing bead I6.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacricing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

2. A reenforced container comprising a two- 4piece body, the body sections being joined together in substantially diametrically opposed side seams, bail ears secured in said side seams respectively and each interlocked with at least two thicknesses of metal constituting one of said seams and adjacent the top of said body, each of said side seams being disposed substantially centrally relative to the transverse dimension of its bail ear, and a carrying bail for said container having its ends pivotally connected in said bail ears.
3. A reenforced container comprising a body formed in two body sections Which are connected together and interlocked in opposed side seams, bail ears secured in said side seams respectively and each interlocked with at least two thick- *lower edges of said blank sections, an opening disposed in each side seam and extending into l said blank sections, bail ears positioned in and lling said openings, each of said bail ears being interlocked with at least two thicknesses of metal constituting one of said seams, each of said side seams being disposed substantially centrally relative to the transverse dimensions of its respective bail ear, anda carrying bail having its ends engaged in said bail ears... j
5. A reenforced container comprising a body `having substantially diametrically lopposed side seams, a bottom secured to said body, openings cut through each side seam and through the body wall on each side thereof, bail ears located in said openings andeach interlocked with at least two thicknesses of metal constituting one of said seams, said bail ears also-being interlocked with the body wall material on opposite sides of said seams, each of said side seams being disposed l substantially centrally relative to the transverse dimension of its respectivebail ear, a carrying bail having its ends pivotally connected in said bail ears, and a cover having frictional engagement with said body.
