The present invention relates to containers for thepackaging and delivery, of liquids, such as milk, fruit juices or the like and has particular reference to a sanitary fibre container of a construction which will readily shed water from its top end.
The invention constitutes my United States Patent 2,085,979, issued July 6. 1937, and is especially'an improvement on the top closure construction thereof. 1
The invention contemplates a container top member which is secured to-the body of the contuner by an interfolding of marginal portionsof the top and the body members in an end scam, the top member being domed so that its outer or upper surface is above the plane of the surrounding end seam folds or joints. v
An object of the invention, therefore, is the provision of a sanitary fibre container for milk and other beverages wherein the top closure an improvement upon the container illustrated and described in l5 and having the short edges of the sheet overmember is formed so that water-or other foreign body so that water falling on the container top will readily run off over'the end seam.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawin discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the instant invention and illustrating the same in a closed and sealed condition;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged composite section taken through the container substantially along a composite' plane indicated by the lines 2-4 in Fig. l: and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of the top cosure member of the container before it is assembled with the container body, the view showin the closure element of the member in open position.
As a preferred embodiment of the invention the drawing shows a container of the general construction described in detail in my patent hereinbefore mentioned. The container briefly comprises a substantially rect nslflar body II top and bottom closure ll members 12, i3. The body II is preferably formed from a single sheet of fibrous material folded at right angles to provide four side walls lapped to form a vertical lap side seam IS. The seam edges are preferably secured with a suitable adhesive so that a liquid tight side seam results.
The top and bottom closure members. I2, l3 are preferably squares of fibre material which are interlocked with the adjacent end or marginal portions of the body. For this purpose the body marginal portions are bent obliquely inwardly as at I8 and thence outwardly as at I! thereby providing ledges 2i against which the closure members are supported. The extreme edges of the body marginal portions are bent outwardly and thence inwardly over the outer edges of the closure members thus providing opposite end flanges 22 which hold the members in place.
The bent parts I9, 22 of thebody adjacent its ends and the edges of the top and bottom closure members I2. I 3 are preferably secured witha suitable liquid proof'adhesive. This manner of construction provides a liquid tight end seam which is generally indicated by the numeral 25.
The bottom'closure member [3 is preferably flat throughout as best shown in Fig. 2. In con trast to this the top closure member I! is formed with a raised or domed panel 21 which is struck outwardly from the material of the member. The area of the panel preferably extends over the entire area of the container top inside the inner edge of the top end seam flange 22. In other words the domed panel fits tightly against the-edge of the top end seam. It also extends above the plane of the end seam and practically merges into the end seam in a curved panel section or reenforcing shoulder 28. This construction, of top closure prevents collection of water, such as rain water, ice-water, or any other foreign matter on the top of the container, any such material immediately running off over the end I seam 25 so that the top will be left clean.
The top closure member I2 is also provided with a dispensing opening M which is formed cured to the top by a staple 33.. A portion of the closure element on one side of the staple extends over the dispensing opening 3i and is formed with a struck out plug section 34 which fits tightly into the opening when the container is closed. This portion of the closure element extends over an area. surrounding the dispensing opening'and also extends over the adjacent portion of the end seam so that foreign matter is prevented from collecting on and contaminating these portions of the container. The portion of the closure element on the opposite side of the staple serves as a tab (marked 35) for lifting or carrying the container and this tab is provided with ahole 36 which may be used in hanging the container onto a hook or the like ii desired.

I claim:
member including a substantially flat peripheral portion engaging and supported by said ledge, the inner portion of said closure member comprising a domed central panel disposed above the plane oi said ledge and terminating at its outer periphery in a downwardly extending reenforcing shoulder merging into said flat ledge, the terminal portionot said body outwardly of said ledge being folded inwardly and downwardly over said closure to constitute a substantially flat flange secured to the closure in a liquidproof seam, the inner extremity of said flange abutting closely against the outer shouldered periphery of said domed central panel, whereby liquid foreign matter falling on the closure mem her will readily run of! over the seam.
