Description
I. ALLEN 8v H. CHANDLER. Seed-Dropper.
No. 208,781. Patented Oct. 8, 18 78.
INVENTOR WITNESSES .l PETERS, PHOTQ-UTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRA ALLEN AND HIRAM CHANDLER, OF ALFORDSVILLE, INDIANA; SAID ALLEN ASSIGNOR TO SAID CHANDLER.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEED-DROPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,781, dated October 8, 1978; application filed August 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, IRA ALLEN and H IRAM CHANDLER, of Alfordsville. in the county of Daviess, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seed-Droppers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an attachment for corn-planters, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our attachment, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. v
A represents part of the frame of a corn-drill with the handles B B. C is the chute or conductor, into which the corn is dropped from the wheel and conducted into the ground. In suitable bearings attached to the handles B B is mounted a rocking shaft, a, provided with a central arm, D, which extends a suitable distance on opposite sides of the shaft. To the lower end of the arm D is pivoted a rod, 1), which carries at its end a scoop, d, and this scoop is arranged to lie in the upper end of the conductor 0. To the upper end of the arm I) is pivoted another rod, 6, to the end of which is attached a scraper-block, f, as shown. The
rocking shaft a is further provided with a short arm, 2', connected by a rod, h, with an elbow or bell-crank lever, F, pivoted to one of the handles B. A spring, 121, acting upon the lever F, keeps the parts in the position shown in the drawing-that is to say, the scoop (1 lies across the conductor C, and the scraper f is drawn back to the inner end of the scoop.
The scoop d catches the corn as it is dropped from the wheel, and holds it until it comes to the mark, and then, by pressing the lever F, the scoop is drawn back and the scraper at the same time moved forward to clear the corn from the scoop, and the corn at once drops to the ground. The spring on returns the parts to their former position.
-Havin g thus fully described our invention, what we claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the conductor C of a corn-drill, a scoop, d, and a scraper, f, operating simultaneously in opposite directions, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the rocking shaft (1 with arms D i, the rods 1) c, scoop cl, scraper f, rod h, and lever F,with springm, all con strueted substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this- 6th day of July, 1878.
IRA ALLEN. HIRAM CHANDLER.
