Description

No. 890,226. PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908. A. G. GARVER.
GAGE LIFTER FOR CORN PLANTERS. APPLICATION FILED OUT. 18,1907.
llll-lllml a construction hereinafter set forth, pointed UNITED STATES rarnnr OFFICE.
ARTHUR O. GARVER, OF NEWTON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO WILDMAN M. WOODS, OF NEWTON, IOWA.
GAGE LIFTER FOR CORN-PLANTERS.
Application filed October 18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. GARVER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newton, county of Jasper, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gage-Lifters for Corn-Planters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a means, simple strong, durable, and inexpensive in construction of throwing the marker, of a corn planting machine, to either side of the machine, for the purpose of causing it to be always ready to mark the rows regardless of the turning of the machine or the direction in which it may be going.
My invention consists of certain details of out in my claims and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure I shows a side elevation view of I a corn planter fitted out with my device Fig. II shows a plan view of the same; Fig. III shows a detail view of the shaft and gearing I employ; and, Fig. IV shows a detail, partially in section, of my means of suspending the bearing shaft from the cross beam I employ.
Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 10 is used to indicate a cross beam secured at the rear of a corn planter and the numeral 11 indicates a standard extending downwardly from, and mounted in the center of the said cross beam. At the lower extremity of said standard is rigidly secured, in a longitudinal position, a hollow cylindrical shaft 12 designed as a bearing for a shaft 13 on the forward end of which is secured a beveled gear wheel 14 designed for purposes hereinafter set forth. The rear end of said shaft 13 is secured to a bar 15 and at the outer end of said bar is mounted the marker 16.
The numeral 17 indicates a shaft, designed for rotary movement, having its bearings at 18 and 19 in the sides 20 and 21, respectively, of the corn planter frame, as fully illustrated in Fig. II of the drawings, and
Specification of Letters Patent.
mounted near the central 1portion of said shaft 1s a beveled gear whee 22 designed to Patented June 9, 1908.

engage and mesh with the gear wheel 14. Mounted to the shaft 17 is an upwardly extending arm 23 and secured to the upper portion of said arm is a second forwardly projecting rod 24 secured at its forward extremity to a lever 25, said lever 25 being journaled in the machine frame and designed to be operated by the driver from the seat 26.
In practical use the operation of lever 25 causes, by reason of the construction of the combination of elements 23, 24 and 25 as hereinbefore described, the shaft 17 to revolve, for a limited space, thus obviously moving the beveled gear wheel 22 which in turn operates the gear wheel 14 and this in turn moves the bar 15, carrying the marker 16, upwardly, by a radial movement from the standard 11, and as by construction this said standard is in the middle of the machine it is obvious that the marker being thrown clear over to the opposite side of the machine, will still be in the same relative position to the central line thereof.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,
In combination with the frame of a cornplanter embodying parallel sides and a cross connecting beam, a vertical standard secured at its upper end to said beam and at its lower end being formed with a hollow cylindrical member disposed at right angles to said beam, a short shaft journaled in said member and carrying a bevel gear on its inner end, a bar secured to the outer extremity of said shaft and carrying a marker, a second shaft disposed parallel with said beam and having its'ends revolubly supported by said sides of the frame, a bevel gear carried by said second shaft in mesh with said first named bevel gear, a radial arm carried by said second shaft, a lever at the front of the frame, and a rod connecting said lever and arm.
