LAND-MARKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,510, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed August 13, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER D. HERVEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ohenoa, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Markers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in land-markers for corn-planters.
The object of the invention is to provide a marker which can be shifted to the right and left or be held elevated out of an operative position; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a corn-planter, showing my improved land-marker applied thereto in an operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the marker elevated out of an operative position. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.

To the lower end of the casting bis secured a rod 0, the forward end of which is bent upwardly and supports a curved bar, which serves as a reinguide. The tube B, in addition to being supported in the two-part clamp 11 is supported at the upper end of the standard a by a twopart clamp Z), to the upper plate of which is secured the drivers seat a. The forward end of this tube has a collar formed thereon having an upwardly-projecting portion (Z, which is apertured on a line with an aperture in the upper end of the lug d, and through these apertures passes a spring-projected bolt D,
with a handle for retracting the same and a reduced portion presenting stops for limiting its movement. This bolt enters a segmental slot e in a disk E, rigidly attached near the forward end of a shaft F, which carries the arm to which the marker is attached, and whenin engagement with this slot the marker is held in an elevated position to one side of the center, so as not to be directly in front of the driver. The shaft F is'supported in the tube B to rock therein, and to the rear end thereof is secured an arm G by means of a T-clamp F, said arm having its outer end reduced to receive the spindle h, carrying the marking disk H. The end of the arm is slightly bent, so that the marking-disk will.
be presented at the proper angle to the line of draft in order to throw a slight furrow as it is drawn across the field. Near the end of the arm G is rigidly attached a scraper I, having double scraping-faces which contact with the concave face of the disk H, so as to remove the clods therefrom when the disk is on the right or left hand side of the planter.
"g refers to a brace-rod which extends from near the outer end of the arm G through the extended portion of the disk E to the shaft F. An intermediate brace or braces g may be provided, if found necessary.
In operation the bolt D is retracted, which will permit the marker to assume the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and when in such a position and the planter is drawn across the field a furrow will be made which will mark the land so that the rows can be more readily planted on a line with each other. If the ground is in such a condition that the furrow made is not deep enough to be plainly visible, a two-part weight W may be bolted or otherwise secured near the outer end of the arm G.
WVhen it is not desired to use the marker it may be elevated and retained in such position by the bolt D. Nhen the driver desires to shift the marker from one side to the other it is only necessary for him to slacken upon his reins, which will be supported by the guide carried by the arm 0, and after the marker has been shifted they can be gathered up without leaving the seat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a land-marker, the combination of an arm G, having a marker at its outer end, a shaft F, secured to the arm G, and supported in bearings, a brace-rod g, attached to the arm G and to the shaft F, a disk carried by the shaft F and provided with a lug through which the brace-rod 9 passes, and locking means adapted to engage with the disk, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a land-marker, of a frame having bearings in which is journaled a tube or shaft F, an arm G, secured to said shaft at right angles thereto, the outer end of the arm carrying a rotary disk, the shaft F, having a disk with a segmental slot, and a spring-projected bolt carried by the frame for engagement with said slot, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a land-marker, of a wheel-frame carrying a tube B at right angles with the axle thereof, a frame composed of bar F, arm G, and brace-rod g, jou rnaled therein, the arm G having a bent end, which carries a spindle h, a marking-disk H, secured thereto, scraper I, clamped upon the spindle and adapted to contact with the concave face of the disk H, substantially as set forth.
