Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQF.
B. F. GHORMLEY, OF NEW FRANKFORD, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,872, dated July 13, 1858K.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. F. GHORMLEY, of New Frankford, in the county of Scott and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the ac-` companying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of the several' devices, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter described.
In order that others skilled-in the arts may make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation with one side removed showing the internal arrangement of the several parts. Fig. 2 is a front view of the machine.
B, as seen both in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, is a fluted cylinder through which an axl-e may pass and to which a crank (e) is attached.
C, is a plane roller placed at the lower extremity of the machine.
(a a) are twisted cords which pass over and around cylinder B, and roller C. Grooves are cut in cylinder B, and may be cut in roller C for the reception of cords (a, a) as shown in the drawing.
D, is a luted wash-board which may be constructed either of wood or zinc, or any other suitable material which is generally used for such purposes.
(c c) represent springs which are secured in the frame and are designed to press the wash board against the liuted cylinder in its revolutions.
(d) represents a set screw for the purpose of regulating the pressure of the springs against the wash board. The wash board is pivoted at its lower extremity as will be seen to the frame, while its upper extremity i s loose and is operated upon by the springs The operation of my invention is as follows: The machine is placed in a tub of water suiiiciently large to contain it. water may be of such depth to cover the roller C. The cords (a, a.) are then untwisted and the article is placed between the parts which close again and hold the clothes securely. Motion is then given by means of the crank (e) to the cylinder B, and said cylinder revolving the clothes pass down into the water, then around the roller C, and up the inclined support I-I, between the cylinder B, and the wash board D, where they are rubbed and pressed. The water being pressed out, they pass down and are again dipped into the water and are again rubbed and pressed until the dirt is all removed, the dirt and water being pressed out at each revolution.
I do not claim any single member of this machine as they have all been used before, but- Having thus fully described my invention what I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination and arrangement of the luted and grooved roller B, and the cords (a a) and roller C, with the hinged wash board D, springs (c c) and temper screws (CZ el), all being operated and constructed in the manner, and for the purpose, herein fully described.
B. F. GHORMLEY.
