Plochman, Margaret W. Plochman,
Application February) 5, 1934, Serial No. 709,683
'7 Claims.
The invention relates generally to commercial packages and more particularly to a container in the nature of a bottle or jar.
The general object of the invention is to provide a container generally shaped to represent an animate figure and havingsurface configurations to represent attire or clothing on the figure, and to combine with said surface configuration a label representing certain parts of the attire and positioned on and conforming to the surface configurations so as to provide a harmonious structural entity.
More specific objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of a commercial package embodying the features of the invention. I
Fig. 2 is a view of a label used in connection with and as a part of the package.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
The illustrative embodiment of the invention herein shown is intended for use as a commercial package for dispensing food products such, for example, as mustard or the like, and it comprises a container shaped generally to represent or simulate an animate figure, real or fanciful, and having thereon surface configurations and areas designed to represent the attire or accoutrements for the figure. These surface configurations and areas may be formed in any desired way as by providing raised and/or depressed lines or sections which, for example in the case of a glass bottle or jar, may be molded in the surface during the formation thereof. A part of the attire or accoutrements for the figure is provided by afiixing to the container a separate section which may be in the form of a sheet of paper adhesively secured in place, and designed, shaped and dimensioned so as to coact with the surface configurations on the container in completing or supplementing the simulation or representation of such attire or accoutrements. The said sheet of paper, either by its shape or by surface ornamentation thereon, or both, may be designed to represent, in whole or in part, one or more articles of attire or the like, and in the case of a commercial package, it may also serve the purpose of a label to bear printed matter.
In the present instance, the container is a bottle or jar made of glass and indicated generally at II). The bottle is provided with a suitable base II, and above the base the bottle is shaped generally to represent an animate figure. As illustrated herein, the figure is that of a short, grotesque man which might be said to be characteristic of a Dutchman. The representation of the figure is attained not merely by giving the bottle generally the shape of the figure, but surface configurations on the. glass are formed to represent the attire of. the figure and also details of the figure which are not covered by its attire. Thus, on the head of the figure which forms the upper part of the bottle, the nose, eyes, mouth, and ears are formed on the surface of the glass.
The body of the figure which is attired in suitable clothing is provided with suitable ridges or depressions formed on the surface of the glass to represent such clothing. Thus, the surface of the glass is shaped to represent a collar l2, and an outer garment such as the coat is indicated by ridges or other suitable conformation at the outline of the garment, the portions forming the sleeves i3 and lapels 14 being raised slightly above the surrounding surface of the glass in a manner which realistically depicts these elements of the coat. For the trousers of the figure, the glass is formed with a plurality of vertically extending ridges 15 giving the appearance of material having a striped pattern. Visible parts of inner garments such as the shirt and vest appear in the depressed portion or recess between the lapels of the coat, and the necktie is formed by a raised portion l6 (see Fig. 4) on the surface of the glass in a manner characteristic of a necktie.
To give the figure a more realistic appearance, a sheet of paper, which may be a label, indicated generally at 11, is provided which is shaped and ornamented to illustrate certain parts of the attire. Thus, in the present instance, the label, which is illustrated separately in Fig. 2, is shaped and colored, if desired, to represent the visible parts of the inner garments on the figure such as the vest, shirt and necktie. The portion of the label which represents the vest, in the present embodiment, provides an area upon which printed advertising matter may be placed. Thelabel is attached to the bottle as by gluing it thereon, and is so positioned that the parts of the attire represented by the label are properly located relative to the corresponding parts on the bottle. The recess between the elevations forming the lapels serves to properly locate the label, and the latter coacts With the shoulders of said elevations to give a characteristic appearance.
The raised portions of glass which correspond tothe portions of the attire represented by the label, such as the portion 16 for the tie, serve to make the corresponding parts of the label more realistic by giving such parts a convexity.
The filling and emptying opening of the bottle is at the top thereof,-that is, the top of the portion forming the head of the figure. It is closed by suitable means such as a-screw cap: 29 which has the appearance of a hat on the head of the figure. The cap may be given the same color as the vest, for example, to conform to a color scheme.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have provided a bottle or jar which is generally shaped to represent an animate figure and having surface configurations representing the attire and other details of the figure, and have combined therewith to provide a harmonious structural entity a label representing certain parts of the attire of the figure, which is so shaped and positioned as to conform to the surface configurations.
I claim as my invention:
l. A commercial package comprising, in combination, a container having the shape of an animate figure and'provided with areas representative of the attire or accoutrements of said figure, and a label attached to said container on certain of said areas and constituting part of the attire or'accoutrements of said figure.
2. A commercial package comprising, in combination, a glass bottle shaped to represent a male human figure, and a label shaped and printed to represent visibleparts of the vest, shirt and necktie worn by said figure and attached to said figure in the proper position for said articles of clothing.
1 3. A commercial package comprising, in combination, a glass bottle shaped to represent a human figure and having surface configurations bination, a bottle generally shaped to represent an animate figure and having surface configurations representing the attire or accoutrements of said figure, and a label shaped to represent certain parts of said attire or accoutrements and attached to and covering the corresponding parts of the surface configurations whereby the label is given a form by said configurations characteristic of said certain parts.
5. A commercial package comprising, in combination, a bottle generally shaped to represent a male human figure and having surface configurations consisting of elevations and depressions representing the clothing of said figure including elevations representing the lapels of the coat of the figure with a depression between said lapels to provide a recess representing the shirt and vest and an elevation to represent the necktie, and a label shaped to represent the vest, shirt, and necktie and positioned in and located by said. recess, the elevation representing the necktie giving a convexity characteristic of a necktie to the portion of the label representing the necktie.
6. A commercial package comprising, in combination, a bottle shaped generally to represent a human figure and having surface configurations to represent garments of the figure, the surface configurations including raised portions. to represent the edges of the outer garments with a depressed area between said edges, and a label positioned in said depressed area and simulating an inner garment with its edges meeting the shoulder provided by said raised portion and coacting therewith characteristically of said inner garment.
7. A commercial package comprising, in combination, a container having shape of an animate figure including parts of attire or accoutrements thereof, and a label attached to said container and having characteristics of certain parts of such attire or accoutrements and coactin'g with and complementing shaped portions of the container to represent the complete attire or accoutrements for such figure.
