35 claims. (ci. 1er-girar 'Ihe present invention relatesto typewriters and more particularly to a device for use on typem writers for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet already located in the machine by means oi" feed rollers arranged above the platen.
In the hitherto known devices of this kind it was necessary for the purpose of introducing and adjusting the upper sheets to carry out a 16 considerable number of manipulations. The
mode of adjustment was complicated and tedious and demanded particular attention on the part of the operator.
Thesedefects are avoided according to the 15 .invention principally by providing for the pur-f pose of adjusting the upperv sheet to the desired line position, a, control member having a selector disc or dialling disc, which control member is operatively connected with the feed rollers.
Furthermore, according to the invention, the device may advantageously be constructed in such mamier that the superposed sheet is moved automatically by means of feed rollers oper,- atively connected with a spring motor and that the said superposed sheet during line spacing operations is automatically ejected as desired, cr

Referring to the drawings:
The device is detachably mounted by means of lateral supports i and 2 on the spindle Gt oi the platen S between the ends of the platen and the bearings of the said spindle 6d. Each support vi and t respectively is provided with a pin la and 2a respectively, which rests in an arm t and t respectively fixed to the carriage of the typewriter and providedwith a slot for the re caption of the said pin (Figs. i and 8) On the pin la of the one supporti an 'adjusting knob 5 is mounted which can be pushed outwards against the action of a. spring 6. In the oper- 15 ative position the said knob passes below a pin Y 3a projecting laterally on the arm 3, and thereby locks the whole device on the carriage of the typewriter. In. order to detach the device it is only necessary to draw-out the adjusting knob and lift out the device, whereupon the machine can be used as an 'ordinary typewriter. After releasingthe adjusting knob li it is also possible to flap the device over towards the rear.
Between the supports I and 2 a quadrilateral 25 supporting bar is ixed which carries the guiding device for the superposed sheet. The said device is constituted primarily by a feed plate 8, the lateral edges of which are bent round towards the front.' Between the said bent lateral edges a 30 front guide platea is mounted, the lower end 9d oi which projectsbetween the feed rollersI to wards the platen S.
Behind the`feed plate 8 a guide plate Il) is arranged which serves for ensuring, that the journal sheet 4J is correctly introduced in such manner that upon its introduction it passes properly around the platen S and does not enter the space between the feed vand guide plates t and 9 (Figs. 11 and 12). The guide plate Hi is provided in the middle with a guideflap 10b having a longitudinal'slot Hic into which a projection I5 fixed to the supporting bar 1 projects and limits' the movement of the said guide 50 plate l0. In the position shown in Figs. 2 and 11 the crank i3v has been turned over towards the rear into the position indicated by chain dotted lines, so that the guide plate lil is located in the lower position and projects through the intermediate space between the upper edge of the line spacing indicator Z arranged in front of the platen S and the lower edge 9a of the guide plate 9. If, now, the journal sheet J asa result of the rotation of the platen has arrived at the height of the upper edge of the line spacing indicator Z, it strikes against. the guide plate I0 and is guided by the latter properly around the roller. When the crank I3 is turned back into the position shown in Fig. 12 in chain dotted lines and in Fig, 13 in full lines, the guide plate I9 moves upwards and passes behind the feed plate 8. The guide plate I0 is provided with two lateral projections Ille (Fig. 1), which at the same time render possible an exact determination of the height of the lines of the journal sheet J.
At the lower end of the feed and guide plates 8 and 9 the feed rollers I1, I8 for the superposed sheet K are arranged, which latter is introduced into an auxiliary lower paper feed member I6. The feed rollers I1 and I8 arranged in pairs are fixed on axles I9 and 20 which are journalled by means of bearing brackets longitiudinally' on the supporting bar 1, the bearing brackets 23 of the front axle I9 being fixed, whilst the bearing brackets 24 of the rear axle 29 are adapted to swing and are drawn forwards by the action of a spring 25. At the left hand end of the two axles pinions 2l and 22 which are in engagement with one another are fixed. As a consequence of this both the pairs of rollers rotate correspondingly so that absolutely reliable introduction and forwarding of the account sheet K is ensured.
The drive of the feed rollers I1 and I6 is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 9. On the right hand end of the supporting bar 1 at the rear side thereof a ysupporting plate 21 projecting over the right hand end is fixed, which is provided with a central projection 21a (Figs. 2 and 3) to which a forwardly projecting axle 28, having a control member 29 rotatably mounted upon it, is xed. This control member 29 is provided with a selector device 29a, 29h, which is constructed similarly to the usual selector discs or dialling discs provided on automatic telephone apparatus. The control member 29 comprises an upper apertured disc 29a. having a number of finger holes 29h, and a number disc 29o located below the first named disc and rigidly connected therewith, the said number disc bearing numbers, for example 1 to 20, located below the linger holes. On the outside of the support 2 an upwardly projecting curved stop arm 39 is fixed on which the finger strikes when the apertured disc 29a. and consequently the whole control member 29 is rotated. On the rear side of the disc 29e a bevel wheel 3| is fixed which engages with a considerably smaller bevel wheel fixed at the upper end of a shaft 33 mounted on the supporting plate 21. The shaft 33 is provided at its lower end with a similar bevelwheel 34 which engages with a bevel Wheel 35 fixed at the right hand end of the roller axle i9 (Figs. 1 and 3). On the roller axle I9 a cord roller 36 is fixed. Above the cord roller 36 a spring motor is fixed on the supporting plate 21, which spring motor is provided with a spiral spring 38 enclosed in a housing 31 constructed in the form of a cord drum. The cord 39 is wound up at the one end on the said cord drum 31 and at the other end to the cord roller 36. As soon as the driving axle I9 is set in rotation by means of the control member 29 the cord unwinds itself whilst tensioning the spring 38 from the cordV drum 31 and winds itself up on the cord roller 36, and meanwhile the rotating feed rollers and I6 draw in the account sheet K inserted from above between the guide members and roll it round the platen S. When the control member 29 is released, the spring 38 becoming untensioned winds up the cord 39 again on the cord drum 31 and thereby turns the feed rollers I1 and I8 in the opposite direction, whereby the superposcd sheet is conveyed back again, i. e. is ejected.
The disc 29e is provided on its rear side with pins 29d arranged at uniform distances from one another on a circle concentric to the axle 28. The number of pins 29dis equal to the number of finger holes 29h in the apertured disc 29a and to the number of figures on the disc 29e rigidly connected with the said apertured disc 29a. Into the path of motion of the said pins 29d, which are bevelled off at their outer ends (see Fig. 4), a locking pawl 40 projects when in the normal position, the said pawl being mounted on a pawl carrier 42 (Figs. 3 and 4) so as to be capable of swinging around a pin 4|. The locking pawl 49 is maintained by the action of a tension spring 43 in the said position, so that every time when, on the rotation of the control member 29, a pin 29d Islides over the said pawl, the latter can be pressed downwards by the pin. The pawl carrier 42 constitutes a vertical projection of a bell crank lever 44 which is mounted at its fulcrum 45 so as to be capable of swinging, on the rear side of the supporting plate 2l and the longer lever arm 44a of which projects downwards. With the shorter arm 44h of the said bell crank lever the one end of a tension spring 46 engages, the other end of 'which is anchored to the supporting plate 21. At the front end of the pawl carrier 42 an auxiliary locking pawl 40h is fixed which is normally no-t located in the path of motion of the pins 29d. If, however, the angle lever 44 is swung against the action of the spring 46 in the direction of the arrow I (Fig. 3), then the locking pawl 40 moves out of the path of motion of the pins 29d and the auxiliary locking pawl 40h moves into the said path When the lever 44 is swung in the direction of the arrow II the locking pawl 40 also 'moves upwards out of the range of the pins 29d,
and the control member 29 which has been turned forwards into an operative position by means of the selector device can turn back under the action of the pull of the cord 39 into the position of rest without being arrested by the locking 'r pawls 40 and 4I respectively. During this operation a pin 41 on the rear side of the control member 29 strikes against a buffer member 48 which is fixed to the supporting plate 21 and which damps the impact effect and maintains the control member 29 in the initial position.
Below the locking pawls a locking lever support 49 is fixed on the supporting plate 21, to which locking lever support a locking lever 50 is pivoted the one upwardly curved end 50a. of which is acted upon by a tension spring 5I and bears in the initial position against a projection 29e of the disc 29e, whilst the other end 50h of the said lever is constructed in the form of a locking hook and rests upon the lever arm 44a, the said end coming into engagement behind the latter under the action of the tension of the spring 5l as soon as the control member 29 is turned out of its initial position.
t the lower end of the supporting plate 21 a horizontal bolt 52 is arranged so as to be slidable, the front end of which bolt is bent over the lever arm 44a so that the latter bears against the shoulder 52a thus formed (see Fig. 7). To the other upwardly bent end of the bolt 52 a tension spring 53 is xed, which is anchored by means of a guide pin to the supporting plate 21 and tends constantly to draw back the bolt 52 towards the right (Figs. 1, 3 and 7) after it has been displaced.
The strength of the tension spring 46 acting upon the lever M as compared with vthe strength oi the spring 53 is so chosen that the first named spring is capable of swinging the lever M in the direction of the arrow II, and bringing it into position against the shoulder of the bolt 52, but is not capable of displacing the -said boit against the action or"y its spring 53. On the other hand the latter spring lis sufficiently strong to enable it to .push the bolt 52 back against the action of the spring 46 and to swing back the lever it in the direction of the arrow I. 1
' For operating the lever M a projecting member 5d is fixed laterally on the pawl carrier T (Figs. 8 and 9) of the line spacing pawl L, which latter line spacing lever H of the typewriter in known manner. On the said projecting member a change-over lever 55 is arranged so as to be capable of swinging, the said projecting member being provided with a tapered front end projecting into the range of action of the lever arm lita. Two lateral extensions 54a:
serve .as limiting stops for the change-over lever 55, whilst a leaf spring 5t pressing on the rear end of the change-over lever holds it rrnly in the desired-position, i. e. either in the position p1 or the position p2 indicated in full and chain dotted tent of one space whilst at the same time the lines respectively in the drawings (Fig. 9). A leaf spring 5i is provided which damps the impact of the spacing lever H on the pawi carrier 'I'.
The mode of operation oi the device is as follows:
Fig. 1() shows the position which the sheets occupy in the typewriter. The reference letter J denotes the journal sheet and K the somewhat smaller superposed sheet. The two sheets are provided with corresponding scales at their ends indicating the line spacing.Vi If, now, it is assumed that the journal sheet J has been placed in the machine together with the carbon paper in the manner indicated in Fig. 10, so that the fourth line from the top is typed upon, the superposed sheet K is now introduced from above in between the guide plates o and 9, the change-over lever being in the position p2 indicated in chain dotted lines in Fig. 9, `i. e. with the point located at the right of the lever Ma, the forengeris inserted in the finger hole d of the apertured disc 29a located above the numeral 4 of the number disc and the whole control member with the disc 29m and the disc 29e is the-n turned in a clockwise direction (see arrow Fig. l) until the finger strikes against the stop 30. As a result of this the feed rollers il and I8 are turned and the superposed sheet K is drawn inland is passed around the platen up to the line 4 so that the account entry can be effected. For removing the superposed sheet it is then only necessary to operate'the spacing control lever H. By this operation the platen is shifted onwards to the expoint of the change-over lever 55 swings lthe .Y lever arm 44a ofthe lever 44 in the direction of the arrow n (Fig. 3) towards the left, whereby the pawl 40 is swung out of the range of the pin 29d corresponding to line 4 and held in position bythe pawl 40. Thespring motor 3T, 38 now tunis the control member and also the feed rollers I1, I8 back by means of the transmission. members described, so that the superposed sheet lever arm 44a, on the return in this case in K is pushed completely out again. On the attainment of the 29e mounted on hook-shaped end wards. so that the hook no longer holds the lever 44a in position (see Fig. 6). The locking lever 50 only serves the purpose of passing behind the movement of the control member and maintaining the said arm in engagement with the hook, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the locking pawls land 40h remain out of range of the pins 29d.
. If it is desired to type not only on one line, but on a plurality or on all of the lines of a superposed sheet together with the journal sheet, the change-over lever 55 is brought into the position p1 (Fig. 9) with its point located to the left of the lever arm 44a. After the iirst entry line has been typed the spacing control lever H is operated. As a consequence of this the platen together with the journal sheet J is turned onwards through the disc 29e also presses the position of rest the projectionl a one line spacing. At the same time the -lever so that it comes in front of the next succeeding pin 29d. When the line spacing lever H is released the tensoned spring 46 swings the lever it back so that the pawi doh. moves away again from the pin retained by -it and the latter is then locked by the locking pawl do. The control member 29 and the superposed sheet K are therefore likewise moved forward to the extent of a 'one line spacing so that the'nent entry is made simultaneously on the journal sheet J and the superposed sheet K onthe next following line. The two locking pawls tm and ilih operate similar manner to the fixed and loose pawls of a paper carriage shifting device.
arm Ma, in the direction indi- The construotional example described illustrates the arrangement as applied to a typewriter in which the line spacing lever is arranged on the right hand'side of the carriage. In many typewriters; however, the said lever is arranged on the left hand side of the carriage. In this latte-r case an operating lever for actuating the change-over lever 55 can be arranged on the left hand vside of the carriage and can be connected with the said change-over lever 55 by 'means of a linkage.
AWhilst the journal sheet J is held in position by the usual paper guide member P provided with pressing and feeding rollers 6i and 62, there is provided for the superposed sheet K moved by means of the feed rollers i1 and it, below the usual paper guide member P at the lower part of the paper carriage a separate paper guide member I6, in which the superposed sheet K is conveyed backwards.l This arrangementrenders it possible to move and to guide the journal sheet and the superposed sheet entirely independently of one another without having to bring special retaining means for the individual sheets alternately in and out of the working position or to manipulate them in any other way. As a result of this a great simplification of the superposing operation is attained. The front guide plate 9 according to the invention is provided with a projecting part 9a, which projects downwards over the feeding rollers I1 and I8 and extends above the typed line up to a point in close proximity to the platen S. As s. result of this the superposed sheet K is fed up to the platen S with certainty at the height of the line to be typed and is conveyed into the separate lower paper guide member I6.
I claim:
1. In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen of the machine; a control member for feeding the superposed sheet to the right line spacing position, operatively connected to said feed rollers, said control member comprising a selector device; a spring motor comprising a housing, a spring within said housing and a cord pulley associated with said spring; a cord drum on the axle of one of said feed rollers; and a cord operatively connecting said spring motor with said cord drum.
2. In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen of the machine; a control member for feeding the superposed sheet to the right line spacing position, operatively connected to said feed rollers, said control member comprising a selector device; a spring motor comprising a spring and a housing forming a cord pulley within which said spring isarranged; a cord drum on the axle of one of said feed rollers; and a cord wound up on said cord pulley and operatively connecting said spring motor Iwith said cord drum and said axle.
3. In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen of the machine; a control member for feeding the superposed sheet to the right line spacing position, operatively connected to said feed rollers, said control member comprising a selector device; a. spring motor comprising a housing, a spring within said housing and a cord pulley associated with said spring; a cord drum on the axle of one 4of said feed rollers; a cord operatively connecting said spring motor with said cord drum; and a releasable locking mechanism operatively connected with said spring motor and, when in the locking position, preventing backward rotation of the latter. In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen of the machine; al control member for feeding the superposed sheet to the right line spacing position, operatively connected to said feed rollers, said control member comprising a selector device; a spring motor comprising a housing, a spring within said housing and a cord pulley associated with said spring; a. cord drum on the axle of one of said feed rollers; a cord operatively connecting saidspring motor with said cord drum; and a releasable locking mechanism operatively connected with said spring motor and, when in the locking position, preventing backward rotation of the latter, whereby upon release of said locking mechanism, said spring motor turns said feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of the previously introduced superposed sheet.
5. In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen of the, machine; a control member for feeding the superposed sheet to the right line spacing position, operatively connected to said feed rollers, said control member comprising a selector device; a spring motor comprising a housing, a spring within said housing and a cord pulley associated with said spring; a cord drum on the axle of one of said feed rollers; a cord operatively connecting said spring motor with said cord drum; a releasable locking mechanism operatively connected with said spring motor and, when in the locking position, preventing backward rotation of the latter, whereby upon release of said locking mechanism, said spring motor turns said feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of the previously introduced superposed sheet; and a setting member capable of swinging in two directions and controlling said loclfng mechanism in such manner that when said setting member is swung in the one direction a backward rotation of the feed rollers equivalent to one line spacing is caused and when it is swung in the other direction the locking mechanism is released whereby the feed rollers rotate backwardly under influence of the spring motor. i

In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting .1n upper sheet in front of a journal sheet located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen of the machine; a control member for feeding the superposed sheet to the right line spacing position, operatively connected to said feed rollers, said control member comprising a selector device; stop pins arranged on the rear side of said control member; a spring motor comprising a housing, a spring within said housing and a cord pulley associated with said spring; a cord drum on the axle of one of said feed rollers; a cord operatively connecting said spring motor with said cord drum; a releasable locking mechanism operatively connected with said spring motor and, when in the locking position, preventing backward rotation of the latter, said releasable locking mechanism comprising 'a fixed pawl and a loose pawl co-operating with said stop pins in such manner that when said setting member is swung a step-by-step feed of the superposed sheet to the position for the typing of the next line is obtained, whereby upon release of said locking mechanism, said spring motor turns said feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of the previously introduced superposed sheet; and a setting member capable of swinging in two directions and controlling said locking mechanism in such manner that when said setting member isswung in the one direction a backward rotation of the feed rollers equivalent to one line spacing is caused and when it is swung in the other direction the lock-r ing mechanism is released whereby the feed rollers rotate backwardly under influence of the spring motor.

In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet. located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen of the machine; a control member for preventing backward rotation of the latter, said releasable locking mechanism comprising a fixed pawl and a loose pawl co'operating with said stop pins in such manner that when said setting member is swung a step-by-step feed of the superposed sheet to the position for the typing of the next line is obtained, whereby upon release of said locking mechanism, said spring motor turns said feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of the'previously introduced superposed sheet; a setting member capable of swinging in two directions and controlling said locking mechanism in such manner that when` said setting membervis swung in the one. direction a.y
backward rotation of the feed rollers equivalent to one line spacing is caused and when it is swung in the other direction the locking mechanism is released whereby the feed rollers rotate4 -backwardly under influence of the spring motor;
and an adjustable member co-operating with the line spacing mechanism of the typewriter and adjustable into one or the other of two v positions in such manner as to cause said setting memberfto swing in the one or the ,other direction.

In typewriters, a device for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of a journal sheet located in the typewriter, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the a platen of the machine; a control member for feeding the superposed sheet to the right line spacing position, operativelyconnected to said feed rollers, said control member comprising a selector device; stop pins arranged on the rear side of said control member, a 'spring motor comprising a housing, a spring within said housing and a cord pulley associated with said spring; a cord drum on the axle of one of said feed rollers; a cord operatively connecting said spring motor with said cord drum; a releasable locking mechanism operatively connected with said spring motor and, when in thev locking position, preventing backward rotation of the latter, said releasable locking mechanism comprising a xed pawl and a loose pawl co-operating with said stop pins in such manner that when said setting mem ber is swung a step-by-step'feed of the superposed sheet to the position for the typing of the next line ,is obtained, whereby upon release of said locking mechanism, said spring motor turns said feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of" the previously introduced superposed sheet; a setting member capable of swinging in two directions and controlling said locking mechanism in such manner that when said setting member is swung in the one direction a backward rotation of the.feed rollers equivalent to one line spacing is caused and when it is swung in the other direction the locking mechanism is released whereby the feed rollers rotate backwardly under influence of the spring motor; an adjustable member co-operating with the line spacing mechanism of the typewriter and adjustable into one or the other of two -positions in such manner .as to cause said setting member to swing in the one or the other direction; and means comprising a releasable locking `member for detachably mounting the device on the paper carriage of the typewriter.

A paper feed mechanism for writing machines for introducing and adjusting a paper sheet into writing position, comprising feed rollers arranged above the platen for feeding .the paper sheet, a control member operatively connected with the feed rollers, and a line selector device with indications corresponding to the individual writing lines of the paper sheet, said line selector device being arranged to be actuated in connection with said control member in al quick actionfor introducing the paper sheet to any desired line position.
11. A paper feed mechanism according to claim l0, in which the control member and the line selector device comprisea disc with finger holes and indications for the finger holes, said indidifferent writing lines of the paper sheet.
12. A mechanism, according to claim 10, in which a motor is provided for the control member and the line selector device which is energized, upon introducing the lpaper sheet and de^ energized to eject said sheet. v
13..A device, as speciedvin claim 10, wherein the control member and the indicating means comprise `a selector disc with linger holes.
14. A device as specied in claim 10,` wherein ranged above the platen, are operatively con-- nected witha spring motor.
16. A device as specified in claim 10, wherein said control member and said feed rollers, arranged above the platen, are operatively connected with a spring motor comprising a rotatable housing, a spring within said housing fixed 'at the one end to the said housing and at the other end to the rigid frame of the device, and connecting means arranged between the housing and the control member and feed rollers to transfer motion from said housing to said feed rollers and vice-versa.
17. A device as specied in claim l0, wherein said control member and said feed rollers, arranged above the platen, are operatively connected with a spring motor comprising a rotatable housing constructed in the form of a cord pulley, a spring fixed at the one end to said housing and at the other end to the rigid frame of the device, a cord wound up on said housing, a. cord drum acted upon by said cord, and a feed roller axle upon which said cord drum is mounted.

A device for use on typewriters, for the introducing and adjusted superposing of an account sheet in front of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen; a control member operatively connected with said feed rollers; indicating means for selectively adjusting the account sheet to the desired line position; a spring motor with which said control member and said feed rollers are operatively connected; and a locking mechanism which, when in the locking position, prevents backward movement of said'control member and feed rollers under the influence of said spring motor.
19. A device for use on typewriters, for the introducing and adjusted superposing of an account sheet in front of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen; a control member operatively connected with said feed rollers; indicating means for selectively adjusting the account sheet to the desired line position; a spring motor with which said control member and said feed rollers are operatively connected; and alocking mechanism which, when in the locking position, prevents backward movement of said control member and feed rollers under the influence of said spring motor, said locking mechanism being provided with releasing means by the operation of which said spring motor moves said control member and feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of the previously introduced account sheet.

A device as specified in claim 10, wherein stop pins are arranged on said control member, and a fixed pawl and a loose pawl are arranged together on a movable member and co-operate with said stop pins in such manner that when said movable member is operated a backward movement of the control member and the feed rollers equivalent to one line spacing is, caused.
21. A device for use on typewriters, for the introducing and adjusted superposng of an account sheet in front of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen; a control member operatively connected with said feed rollers; indicating means for selectively adjusting the account sheet to the desired line position; a spring motor with which said control member and said feed rollers are operatively connected; and a locking mechanism which, when in the locking position, prevents backward movement of said control member and feed rollers under theinfluence of said spring motor, said locking mechanism being provided with releasing means by the operation of which said spring motor moves said control member and feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of the previously introduced account sheet; step by step feeding means adapted to cause a backward movement of said control member and said feed rollers equivalent to one line spacing of the account sheet, and a universal member movable into diierent positions to operate said releasing introducing and adjusted sperposing of an account sheet in front of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen; a control member operatively connected with said feed rollers; indicating means for selectively adjusting the account sheet to the desired line position; a spring motor with which said control member and said feed rollers are operatively connected; and a locking mechanism which, when in the locking position, prevents backward movement of said control member and feed rollers under the influence of said spring motor, said locking mechanism being provided with releasing means by the operation of which said spring motor moves said control member and feed rollers backwards and causes the ejection of the previously introduced account sheet; step by step feeding means adapted to cause a backward movement of said control member and said feed rollers equivalent to one line spacing of the account sheet; and a lever carrying said locking mechanism, said releasing means and said step by step feeding means, said lever being capable of swinging in two directions to operate either said releasing means or said step by step feeding means.
23. A device, as specified in claim 18, wherein an adjustable part is provided on the line spacing mechanism of the typewriter, said adjustable part being adjustable into one or the other of two positions and co-operating with said line i spacing mechanism in such manner as lto cause said universal member to move in the one or the other direction during the line spacing.
24. A device for use on typewriters, for the introducing and adjusted superposing of an account sheet in front of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen; a control member operatively connected with said feed rollers; indicating means on said control member for selectively adjusting the account sheet to the desired line position, and means for detachably mounting the device on the paper carriage of the typewriter comprising releasable locking members for connecting the device with the paper carriage.

A device for use on typewriters, for introducing and adjusted superposing of an account sheet in front of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platen; a control member operatively connected with said feed rollers; indicating means on said control member for selectively adjusting the account sheet to the desired line position; arms fixed to the platen carriage of the typewriter and provided with slots; supporting members arranged between the device and the axle of the platen; and pins on said supporting members, said pins being releasably locked and engaging with said slots of said arms for detachably mounting the device on the platen carriage.

A device for use on typewriters for the introducing and adjusted superposing of an account sheet in front of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: feed rollers arranged above the platenof the machine; a control member operatively connected with said feed rollers; indicating means on said control member for selectively adjusting the account sheet to the desired line position, a
. paper guide arranged below the platen; pressing rollers on said paper guide, for holding and feeding the journal sheet; and a separate paper guide for the superposed account sheet arranged below said first named paper guide and said pressing rollers.
27. A device for use on typewriters, for the introducingy and adjusted superposing of an account sheet in front'of a journal sheet, already located in the machine, comprising in combination: a feed device consisting of guide'plates and feed rollers arranged above the platen; a paper guide arranged below the platen of the machine; pressing rollers on said paper guide holding and feeding the journal sheet; a separate paper guide Afor the superposed account sheet arranged below said first named paperA guide, the front guide plate of the said feed device being prolonged below the said feed rollers up to a point in proximity to the platen above the line of writing'for guiding the account sheet during its introduction guide holding and feeding the journal sheet; a
separate paper guide for the superposed account sheet below said first named paper guide and said pressing rollers arranged below the platen of the machine, the front guide plate of --said feed device being prolonged below said feed rollers up to a. point in proximity to the platen above the line of writing for guiding the account sheet during its introduction from the front of the machine with certainty into said separate paper guide below said first named paper guidev and said pressing rollers; and a movable and adjustableguiding member arranged between said feed device located above the platen and said paper guides located below the platen for separating the two paths of the sheets above the platen from one another.
29. A paper feed mechanism for writing machines for introducing and adjusting a paper sheet into writing position, comprising feed rollers arranged above the platen for feeding the paper sheet, a control member operatively connected with the feed rollers, a line selector device with p trol member.
30. 1n a device for use on typewriters for superposing and adjusting an upper sheet in front of la journal sheet already located in the machine, the combination of a paper guide extending below the platen of the machine; pressing rollers arranged on said paper guide at the bottom of the platen and holding and feeding the journal sheet; and a separate paper guide for guiding the superposed sheet arranged below said first named' paper guide and said pressing rollers, said separate paper guide being so arranged that the front edge thereof will receive the superposed sheet and guide it directly below and under the platen and to the rear of the typewriter.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with paper feed means including feed rolls, of power operated ejector devices, including a drum having connection with one of said rolls, a tape connected at one end with the source of power, at the other end with said drum and adapted to be Wound upon said drum during the insertion of a paper sheet and to eject the paper upon power driven, unwinding movement.
32. A device according to claim 30, in which the separate paper guide is spaced below the rstmentioned paper guide wherein the space between the two guides is greater at the parts where the guides curve under the platen than the two end parts.
33. A device according to claim 30, in which feed rollers and feed and guide plates are provided above the printing point for guiding and feeding-the superposed sheet into the separate paper guide.
34. A device according to claim 30, in which feed rollers and feed and guide plates are provided above the printing point for guiding and feeding the superposed sheet into the separate paper guide, and in which one of the guide plates is lengthened toward the platen.
35. A deviceaccording to claim 30, in which feed rollers and feed and 'guide plates are prov ided above the printing point for guiding and feeding the superposed sheet into the separate paper guide, and in which a guide plate is provided pivotally mounted to properly introduce the superposed sheet into the machine.
