5 Claims. (01.197-128) The invention has relation to paper feed mechanism for recording machines such, for instance, as the Gardner calculating machine disclosed in U. S. patent application Serial No. 607,982 filed April 28, 1932 by Loring P. Crosman.
The invention contemplates the provision of improved means for the separate insertion and removal of a general record sheet, and of individual statement sheets, so that amounts entered in the different statement sheets may all be entered on the general record sheet, the latter being line spaced in the usual manner.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as set forth in the appended claims.

In these drawings the numeral 500 represents a cylindrical platen, mounted in a transversely shiftable carriage and provided with the usual line spacing, carriage stepping and tabulating mechanisms.
The record sheet is fed over the supporting plate 501 (Fig. 6), beneath the platen 500 and between the same and the feeding rolls 502, and upwardly around the platen, within the glide 'fingers 503, and beneath upper guide plate 504. The usual releasing lever 505 holds the rolls 502 away from the platenv 500 during any necessary adjustment of the record sheet. f
The statement sheet is placed upon a supporting plate 506 and allowed to drop into engagement with two contacting sets oi feed rolls 507, 508, whereby the sheet will be brought to rest in aligned position. The shaft 509 upon which drawings illustrating the rolls 507 are secured is provided with a pinion 510 (Fig. 4) meshing with a gear 511 designed to be driven by an endless belt 512, supported upon suitable idler rolls..
To feed the statement sheet into printing po- 00-. sition, the operator moves belt 512, rotating shaft 509 and thereby carrying thepaper into contact with a deflector 513 (Fig. 6), the lower edge of which is formed as a straight edge, parallel with the axes of rolls 507, 508 and of platen 500.. 0 5 Passing down in front of the platen, the statement sheet will contact with the inner surface of guide plate 514. Thereupon the operator will adjust the feed devices to their printing po-r "l5 sition, as follows:
The guide fingers 503 which, in the position of the parts just described extend across the printing line, are attached at their upper ends to a slide frame 515, (Figs. 6-8) connected by a link 8 516 with a crank arm 517, secured uponshaft 518. A crank arm 519 (Fig. 2) is also secured to shaft 518, and is provided with an operating knob (Figure 2') so that manual rotation of crank arm 519 will rock the shaft and move frame 515 5 from the position shown in Fig. 6 into that shown in Fig. 7, retracting finger 503 as shown.
This movement of crank arm 519 will also lower the upper guide plate 504 into close relation with the platen 500, bymeans of a spring arm supported, by means of a pin 521, upon a cam face 520 (Fig. 2) of arm 519. As arm 519 is rotated spring arm 522 will be allowed to fall away from a lever 523, holding plate 504 in raised position, said plate being drawn downwardly by a suitable spring.
The fingers 503 are flexible, being normally held flexed against the plate 501 by guides, and thus tend to wrap around the platen 500, as they are advanced beyond the end of plate 501. In order to counteract the endwise pull on frame 515, 'due to this spring character of the fingers, and to make the operation of the adjustment members easy, a spring 524 connects link 516 a with plate .501,,as seen in Figs. 6 and 7.
The above-described adjustment of the record sheet guides is effected without disturbing the feeding and guiding mechanism for the statement sheets; arrangement is desirable be-' thenecessity for inserting and removcause of ing a number of statement sheets during the time that a single record sheet is kept in the machine.
A statement sheet to be inserted is placed upon the supporting plate 506, this plate, like the plate 501 being disposed at an angle such that the paper when released by the operator will slide down into contact with the feeding rolls (507 and 508 of the statement sheet mechanism) and, the axes of these rolls being parallel with the axis of platen 500, the paper will be automatical- 1y brought to perfect alignment. The paper having been fed between the various guide members, as previously described, the feeding means are adjusted to recording position, in which the special statement sheet feeding means is disabled, and the statement sheet is brought into condition to be fed, in unison with the record sheet, upon movement of platen 500. For the purpose of adjusting these feeding devices, the supporting plate 506 is connected with the carriage frame 525 (Fig. 2) by links 526 and is adapted to be swung upon this link connection by means of a toggle 527. One member of this toggle is provided with a thumb lug 528, for manipulation by the operator, whereby the supporting plate is swung from the position shown in Fig. 2 into that illustrated in Fig. 3.
As seen in Figs. 6 and 7, the forward link connection 526 is provided with a finger 529, contacting with a pivotally mounted carrier 530 for the rollers 508. As plate 506 is swung into the position illustrated in Fig. 7, finger 529 will fall away from carrier 530 and allow the rolls 508 to drop out of contact with the rolls 507, thus disabling the special statement sheet feed, and leaving the statement sheet free to be fed by platen 500. The straight edge 513 is secured between the opposite forward links 526, and will be positioned thereby into close relation with the platen 500.
Feed rolls 531 are also moved into position to hold the statement sheet, under spring pressure, against platen 500, these rolls being carried upon pivoted plates 532 connected by links 533 (Figs. 4 and 5) with the links 526 in such manner as to provide a toggle action serving to throw the rolls 531 into and out of operative position as plate 506 is adjusted. The lower guide plate 514 is moved downwardly, as rolls 531 are engaged, out of the path of these rolls, by a socket connection 583 between the plates 532 and the arms 1 534 carrying said guide plate.
An interlock is provided, whereby it is necessary to throw the statement sheet feeding means into the non-registering position before the record sheet feeding means can be adjusted to feeding position, and for requiring the restoration of the record sheet feeding means before the statement sheet feeding means can be returned to the registering position. This is provided by the pin 521 (Figs. 2 and 3) which, in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 will lie against a shoulder 535 of toggle 527, preventing movement of said toggle until arm 519 has been swung to its upper position, and cam face 520 thereof has permitted pin 521 to drop out of register with shoulder 535. In the position illustrated in Fig. 3, pin 521 lies beneath a cam face 536 of'toggle 527, and it is thereby held in the path of a cam shoulder 537 of arm 519, so that said arm cannot be moved while the toggle 527 remains in this adjusted position.
When the present invention is used in connection with a motor operated recording machine, the adjustment means for the feed devices may be so connected with the clutch of the machine that the latter cannot be engaged until the said devices are brought to the registering position. This means comprises a link 538, connecting toggle 527 with an arm 539 pivoted at 540 to the frame 525, and forming part of a bail 541, which bail is engaged by a spring pressed pin 542 having a head 543 which, in the position of the parts illustrated in Fig. 2, lies in the path of movement of a clutch releasing arm 544, preventing ,movement of said arm to release the spring clutch member 545 to engage the clutch. As plate 506 is swung to the position of the parts illustrated in Fig. 3, link 538 will rock bail 541 against the pin 542, moving said pin against the tension of its 9g spring so that the head 543 thereof will be brought out of the path of movement of lever 544, in which position the machine. may be operated in the usual manner.
Means are also provided for adjusting the statement sheet feed devices into the non-registering position when the paper carriage is moved into a given laterally shifted position. This will be useful in various forms of tabulated work, in which a right hand column is used for giving the 109 total of all the items entered at a given time on the statement sheet.
The automatic means comprises an arm 546 (Figs. 2 and 3) pivotally connected to the frame 525 and having a pin and slot connection at one end with the link 538. At its other end arm 546 is provided with a roller 547 adapted in the lateral movement of the carriage to contact with a cam plate 548 (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) secured to the stationary frame of the machine. As the car- 110 riage is moved to the right, it will be apparent from inspection of Fig. 1 that roller 547 will contact beneath cam plate 548, and arm 546 will be rocked, raising link 538 and throwing toggle 527 into the position illustrated in Fig. 2. Upon return movement of the carriage, roll 547 will contact with the upper face of cam plate 548, and will ride idly over the cam, this movement being permitted by the slotted connection with the link 538. A spring 549 holds the roller 547 in correct relation with cam plate 548, as seen in Fig. 3.
Means may be provided for lifting a sheet which has been placed upon the plate 506 out of feeding contact with the rolls 507, 508, and for holding said sheet firmly in position, while narrow sheets are brought to desired alignment above the first named sheet. This means comprises a roll 559 (Fig. 1), projecting slightly above the surface of plate 506 and a pivoted spring finger 550 adapted to be moved by finger piece 551 into contact with roller 549. Finger 550 has an outwardly bent end, adapting it to ride over the statement sheet as the finger is moved upward into contacting position.
The resilience of the finger will cause it, after gripping the paper against roll 559, to ride upon and slightly rotate the roll, pulling the statement sheet out of feeding contact with rolls 507, 508, in which position the parts 550, 559 will be held in wedging engagement.

Paper feed mechanism for recording machines, including an inclined plate adapted to afi'ord sliding support to a record sheet, a pair of contacting feed rolls located at the bottom of said plate and forming an alignor abutment for the sheet and cooperating feed means comprising a manually operable endless band extending parallel to said plate, and a reverse drive gear cofiection between said band and one of said r0 2. In a paper feed mechanism for recording machines, the combination with a cylindrical platen and statement sheet .feeding devices, of record sheet insertion devices including a guide plate, flexible curved guide fingers, means normally holding said fingers flexed against said plate with their ends lying adjacent to the printing line of the platen and means for moving said fingers to bring their ends free of the guide plate, and dispose them in a curve about the periphery oi. the platen, across the printing line.
4. In paper feed mechanism for recording machines, the combination with an inclined paper support plate and a feed device located at the bottom of said plate, of normally ineffective means adapted tov lift a paper sheet lying upon said plate out of feeding contact with said device and simultaneously to clamp the sheet to said plate.
5. In paper feed mechanism for recording machines, the combination with a transversely shiitable carriage, a cylindrical platen thereon and record sheet feeding devices, of statement sheet feed rolls cooperating with the platen, a pair oi opposed feed rolls, adjustment means connected with the rolls and adapted to render the first named or the second-named rolls alternatively active, and cam means cooperating with the adjustment means upon movement of the carriage into a given transverse position to disable the platen feed and to engage the opposed feed rolls.
