This invention relates to grinding wheels and more especially to grinding wheels embodying an adapter or backing member to which segments of abrasive material are detachably secured.
7 Among the objects of the invention are: to provide an improved means for locking detachable segments of abrasive material to a backing and supporting structure; to provide a grinding wheel, including an annular adapter or backing member, detachable segments of abrasive material, and clamp means for securing the segments to the backing member while leaving the center of the annular backing member clear of clamping and attaching structure; to provide 15 clamp means for securing detachable segments to an annular backing member while keeping the external periphery of such backing clear of clamping and attaching structure; to provide an improved construction of adapter or backing member for grinding wheels; and to provide an improved and strengthened structure of clamping means and supporting means therefor for securing detachable segments to the backing member of a grinding wheel construction.
Other objects, features and advantages will become apparent from the following description and appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating the genus of the invention, a typical concrete embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front face elevation of a grinding wheel constructed according to the present invention;
Figures 2 and 3 are enlarged sections, taken on the lines 2-2 and 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a locking element shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3; and
Figure 5 is a similar view of a locking element of the type adapted to be substituted for the type 40 shown in Figure 4 after the grinding elements have been worn down to a materially reduced thickness.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown an annular adapter or backing member H] upon which are adapted to be secured a plurality of segments H of abrasive material by means of a corresponding member of wedgelike clamp members l2, one of the clamp members being interposed between each pair of adjacent segments of abrasive material.
The adapter or backing member if] is provided with a concentric, circular opening it, and the space within this opening is entirely clear of attaching or clamping structure. The threaded openings i5 are provided in the plane back face 1936, Serial No. 85,001

Upon the laterally opposite and parallel front face ll, the adapter or backing member ill is provided with a flange 29 which extends from the central openings 14 radially outwardly to a point more than half the distance to the outer periphery 2| of adapter 50. The external peripheral surface 22 of flange 20 is concentric with the peripheral surface 21 of adapter in and these two surfaces are normally disposed with respect to the front and back face surfaces ll and E6. The peripheral surface 2! of adapter ill is left clear of attaching and clamping structure. A radially inwardly directed groove 23 is provided at the base of flange 20 adjacent the juncture of the normally disposed surfaces 22 and H. The groove 23 extends completely around the externally directed portion of flange 28 and is adapted to receive a radially inwardly directed lip or guiding flange 24 pro- Vided upon each of the wedgelike clamps I2.
The lip or guiding flange 24 makes a close sliding fit with the lateral walls of the annular groove 23 and the base surface 25 of each clamping element I2 makes a bearing engagement upon the front face surface ll of the adapter or backing member ID.
The wedgelike clamps l2 are provided with outwardly divergent wedge faces 26, upon the opposite sides thereof, and these faces are adapted to cooperate with correspondingly beveled faces 28 provided at the ends of the segments H of abrasive material. Each clamp I2 is adapted to be moved radially inwardly with reference to the center or axis of the adapter ID by means of socket head fillister screws 38, which extend through stepped borings 3| in the clamp elements, and thread into suitable openings 33 in the flange 20. The screws 30 are preferably provided with sockets 32, as indicated in Figure 2, or other means, by which they may be rotated by suitable tools.
In assembling the grinding wheel illustrated in Figure 1, eight blocks of abrasive material ll are assembled upon the backing member or adapter l0 and a corresponding number of the clamps 52 are moved radially inwardly with respect to the center of the adapter, by threading the screws 30 radially inwardly into the threaded opening 33 in flange Zil. This causes a corresponding radially inward movement of the wedgelike clamp l2, so that the beveled faces 26 of the latter exert radially inwardly directed forces upon the beveled faces 28 at the ends of the segments II, so as to force the latter into firm engagement with the external periphery 22 of flange 20. As indicated in Figure 1, the radially inwardly directed lip or guiding flange 24 upon each of the clamp elements I2 extends the full width of the radially inwardly directed portions of the clamp elements. The lip or guiding flange 24 of each clamp I2 preferably makes a close sliding fit within the groove 23 with the face surface I! of adapter II]. This tends to prevent outward deflection of the upper end of the clamp elements I2, as viewed in Figure 1, and prevents bending or twisting of the tightening screws 3|]. By making the flange 24 of the same width as the forward or radially inwardly directed portion of the clamping elements I2, the cross-sectional area of the lip or flange 24 may exceed the crosssectional area of the tightening screw Sil so that more than twice the cross-section of metal will be provided for preventing radially outward deflection of the upper end o-f the clamps, as compared with constructions employing only tightening screws 30. In the present construction, the screws 30 are subjected only to tension.
As the segments II of abrasive material are worn down, the clamps I2, illustrated in. Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, may be replaced by the clamps I2 illustrated in Figure 5. These latter clamps are of essentially the same construction as those previouslydescribed, except that they are of a shorter length so that they do not extend as far outwardly toward the working faces 35 of the worn down grinding segments l I. The clamps I2 are provided with the lips or guiding flanges Z4, stepped borings 3! for the reception of tightening screws 30, and outwardly divergent wedge faces 26, and the base surface 25' is adapted to make bearing engagement with the front face surface I! of adapter Iii, as in the previously described embodiments.
Sets of the shorter clamping blocks I2 are substituted for the longer clamping elements 22 as the working faces 35 of the grinding segments II are worn down so that end support may be provided for the abrasive segments II and practically the entire depth of the abrasive segments may be utilized. Although but two sets of clamping elements have been illustrated, it is noted that any desired number of such sets of different length clamps may be employed in a similar manner.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be had without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description and showing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A grinding wheel comprising a circular adapter, a flange concentrically arranged on a side face of said adapter and inwardly of the periphery thereof, said flange being provided with a groove adjacent its base and in the outer peripheral surface of the flange, a plurality of segments of abrasive material arranged on said side face of the adapter adjacent the outer peripheral surface of said flange, a plurality of clamp members arranged between said segments, means for moving said clamp members radially inwardly with respect to the axis of said adapter, and guide means on said clamp members projecting inwardly into the groove in said flange.
2. A grinding wheel comprising an adapter in the form of an annulus, a flange concentrically arranged on a side face of said adapter and inwardly of the outer periphery of the adapter, said flange being provided with a groove adjacent the base of the flange andin the external periphery thereof, a plurality of segments of abrasive ma-. terial arranged on said side face of the adapter adjacent the external periphery of said flange, a plurality of wedgelike clamps arranged between said segments, means for moving said clamps radially inwardly with respect to the center of said adapter, and guide means on said clamps projecting into the groove in said flange.
3. A grinding wheel comprising a circular adapter having lateral and peripheral walls normal to each other, said walls being arranged inwardly of the outer periphery of the adapter, said adapter being provided with an annular groove in said peripheral wall, a plurality of clamps arranged adjacent said lateral and peripheral walls, a plurality of segments of abrasive m terial arranged between said clamps and said p2 ripheral wall, means for moving said clamps toward said peripheral wall, and guiding means on each of said clamps extending into said annular groove.
4. In a grinding wheel, the combination with a circular adapter having lateral and peripheral walls normal to each other, said walls being arranged inwardly of the outer periphery of the adapter, said adapter being provided with an annular groove in said peripheral wall and adjacent said lateral wall, of a plurality of wedge-- like clamp means having bearing surfaces adapted to contact said lat-eral wall and provided with an integral lip portion receivable in and adapted closely to fit said groove, and means for moving each of said clamp means toward said peripheral Wall.
5. A grinding wheel comprising an annular adapter having lateral and peripheral walls normal to each other, said walls being arranged in- Wardly of the outer periphery of the adapter, said adapter being provided with an annular groove in said peripheral ,wall and adjacent said lateral wall, a plurality of segments of abrasive material arranged on said lateral wall, a plurality 'of wedgelike clamp members arranged one between each pair of adjacent segments of abrasive material and each clamp member having abearing surface adapted to contact said lateral wall, each clamp member being provided with an integral lip portion adapted to fit within said groove, and bolt means for drawing said clamp members toward said peripheral wall.
6. A grinding wheel comprising a circular adapter having lateral and peripheral walls normal to each other, said walls being arranged inwardly of the outer periphery of the adapter, said adapter being provided with an annular groove in said peripheral wall, a plurality of clamps arranged adjacent said lateral and peripheral walls, a plurality of segments of abrasive material arranged between said clamps and said peripheral wall, means for moving said clamps toward said peripheral wall, and guiding means on each of said clamps extending into said annular groove, the length of saidclamps in an axial direction being less than the axial depth of said segment of abrasive material.
