The invention relates to improvements in yarn winding or spinning machines and more particularly improvements in what are known as builder mechanisms for such machines.
5 It is now common practice in winding bobbins or filling carriers for use on that type of looms known as feeler looms to provide a few preliminary windings technically known as a bunch and for the purpose of providing such prelimi- 10 nary windings the so-called builder mechanism of the spinning machine has been provided with what is known as bunch winding or bunch build ing mechanism.
It is the object of my invention to provide a 15 simple and improved form of bunch building mechanism which may be readily applied to standard forms of builder mechanism now in use.
According to the preferred embodiment of my invention a rotary bunch building worm, pref-. erably eccentrically mounted or of cam form, is attached to the usual builder cam and rotates constantly therewith. During the preliminary operation of the machine this bunch building 25 worm cooperates with a rotatable disk or the like which is carried by the builder arm, whereby the desired limited traverse is imparted to the yarn during the bunch building operation. '80 long as the rotating disk engages the worm the 0 main builder cam is held out of contact with the builder arm, but when the disk finally runs out of the worm the main builder cam automatically comes into operation and the bunch winding mechanism remains inoperative until 35 restored to its initial position when a new bobbin is to be wound. V
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description in which a 40 specific embodiment of the inventive thought involved is set forth for the purpose of illustration rather than by way of limitation.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a conventional spinning frame equipped with a builder motion embodying my invention.-

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2
and showing my improvement.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed view showing the rotative disk and associated mechanism which co-act with the bunch building worm.
For the purpose of illustration I have shown 55 my attachment applied to a spinning frame of the type disclosed in the patent to Muheim No. 949,399 dated February 15, 1910, and enough of such mechanism will be brifiy described to make apparent the location and operation of my improvement, but it will be understood that the 5 improvement is not limited to use on this particular machine but. is broadly applicable to the modern forms of spinning frames which include builder mechanism and is particularly applicable to theWhitin, Sacco-Lowell, and Draper type of machines.
Referring to. the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof reference numeral II] denotes a portion of the frame of a spinning machine, The numeral H denotes the spindle rail, the spindles are indicated at l2 and the ring rail is designated by the numeral l3, one of the rings being shown at I4.
For actuating the ring rail the lifting rod l5 may be employedwhich is operated by a lifting arm [6 carried by a hanger l1 suspended from the frame, a counter weight I8 being secured at the opposite end of the lifter arm from the lifting rod l5.
A shaft 19 rigid with the lifter arm [6 is provided with a crank 20, at the upper end of which is attached a cord or chain 2| which passes over a pulley 22carried by a hanger 23. One end of the cord vor chain 2| is secured to a flanged wheel or pulley 24 forming part of the builder motion.
I A stud or shaft 25 is carried by and extends laterally from a swinging builder arm 26, which a m is pivoted on a stud 21 mounted in the frame I0. The builder arm carries a pair of cars or sockets 28-28 within which is rotatably mounted ashaft 29 which is adapted to be intermittently operated by pick mechanism, in the well-knoWn-manner. The shaft 29 is provided with the usual pick wheel 39, pawl 3i and pick mechanism 32 whereby intermittent motion of the shaft takes place on each traverse of the ring rail .13 and associated mechanism.
' The shaft 29 likewise carries a worm 33 whic meshes with the gearing wheel 34 rigid with the flanged pulley 24 previously described.
As shown a bracket 35 is adjustably carried by the builder arm 26 being secured thereto by a bolt 36 which may be placed at any one of'a plurality of holes thus providing for transverse adjustment. A portion of the bracket may be raised or lowered by adjustment of bolts 31 and 38 as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. This bracket 35 carries the usual cam roller 39 herein shown as rotatably mounted on a shaft 40. This cam roller is adapted to co-act with the ordinary builder cam 4| to secure the ordinary traverse of the ring rail after the bunch winding operation is completed. The builder cam is secured to a hub 12 and is actuated by a gear 43 from any suitable source of power. As shown the hub rotates about a shaft dd secured in the spinning frame It].
i The mechanism above described is in general well-known and its operation apparent to those skilled in the art. To summarize brieflythe gear 43 rotates the builder cam 4! which when the bunch winding mechanism is inoperative acts upon the cam roller 39 thereby tilting the builder arm 26 about the pivot 21. This acts through the chain or cord 2!, crank arm 20, lifter arm 16 and lifter arm l5 to actuate. the ring rail l3 and lay the yarn on the bobbin. Such operation is clearly disclosed in Burdett Patent No. 1,556,815 dated October 13, 1925. a v
The improved bunch winding mechanism which constitutes my invention may now be described.
As shown a bunch building worm wheel 44 is eccentrically secured to the front of the main builder cam 4! by means of bolts 4'! and rotates with the builder cam. Below the worm wheel and preferably mounted on-the shaft 40 about which the cam roller 39 rotates is a bunch building disk 45 which is adapted to cooperate with the worm wheel 44, fitting into the threads of said arm. The diameters of the worm wheel 44 and the disk are so selected that as long as the disk is in engagement with the Worm the cam roller 39 will be held out of engagement with the cam 4!. During this period the builder arm 2'6 will be oscillated by the rotation of the eccentric worm to produce the desired limited traverse for the bunch winding operation. I
When however the disk runs out of the worm, as will take place after a certain number of rotations, the main builder cam will be brought into engagement with the cam roller in the usual manner.
The disk 45 is preferably urged to an outward position by a spring pressed plunger 46 which acts in a direction opposite to the movement which is imparted by the threads of the bunch winding cam 44. i
In starting the machine the builder arm will first be lowered so as to separate the cam roller 39 from the main cam ll, at the same time permitting the bunch forming disk 45 to move to its outermost position under the influence of the spring pressed plunger :38. When the builder arm is released the disk 45 will mesh with the threads of the bunch winding worm 44 as indicated in Fig. 3 and will remain in mesh until the end of the thread is reached, the disk being retracted against the pressure of the plunger 46 to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The bunch building operation is now completed and the main building cam 4! now engages the cam roller 39 to complete the Winding of the bobbin.
The invention has been described in detail for the purpose of illustration but it will be obvious that many variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:-
1. In a builder mechanism, the combination of a main rotating builder cam, a builder arm having means adapted to engage said builder cam for normal building operation, the bunch building member comprising an eccentric worm mounted for rotation with the main builder cam and a disk carried by the builder arm, adapted to mesh with said Worm, and when in mesh therewith to hold the main cam out of engagement with the builder arm.
2. In a builder mechanism, the combination of a main rotating builder cam, a builder arm having means adapted to engage said builder cam for normal building operation, the bunch building member comprising an eccentric worm mounted for rotation with the main builder cam and a disk carried by the builder arm, adapted to mesh with said worm, and when in mesh therewith to hold the main cam out of engagement with the builder arm, said disk being slidably mounted whereby continued rotation of the worm disengages the disk and permits the main builder cam and cam follower to come into engagement.
3. In a builder mechanism, the combination of a main rotatingbuilder cam, a builder arm having means adapted to engage said builder cam for normal building operation, the bunch building member comprising an eccentric worm mounted for rotation with the main builder cam and a disk carried by the builder arm, adapted to mesh with said Worm, and when in mesh therewith to hold the main cam out of engagement with the builder arm, said disk being slidably mounted whereby continued rotation of the worm disengages the disk and permits the main builder cam and cam follower to come into engagement, and means yieldably engaging said disk tending to move the same in a direction opposite to the movement imparted by the worm.
4. In a builder mechanism, the combination of a main rotating builder cam, a builder arm having means adapted to engage said builder cam for normal building operation, the bunch building member comprising an eccentric worm mounted for rotation with the main builder cam and a disk carried by the builder arm, adapted. to mesh with said worm, and when in mesh therewith to hold the main cam out of engagement with the builder arm, said disk being slidably mounted whereby continued rotation of the worm disengages the disk and permits the main builder cam and cam follower to come into engagement, and a spring pressed plunger engaging said disk and tending to move the same in a direction opposite to the movement imparted by the worm.
