BUILDER MECHANISM FOR YARN SPENNING AND WINDING MACHINES.
Application filed December To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE H. BUnDn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Builder Mechanisms for Yarn Spinning and Winding Machines, 01. which the following descriptioinin connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to builder mecha nisms for yarn winding or spinning ma chincs and is more particularly directed to such mechanisms wherein a hunch builder attachment is employed to place upon the filling carriers or bobbins a reserve supply of filling.
It is now the common practice to provide filling carriers or bobbins which are to be employed in teeler looms: with a reserve supply of filling, sometimes termed a bunch to insure that a complete length of filling be laid in the shed on the last pick of the shuttle before replenishment, and various types of bunch builder mechanisms have been devised for this purpose.
The present invention is a further devel opment of the builder mechanisms shown.
and described in the prior patents to Horace H. Burdett, numbered 1,556,814 and 1,556,- 815, dated October 13, 1925.
In ordinary practice, the yarn guide which directs the yarn to the filling carriers or bobbins is depressed on the completion of a series of wound bobbins to permit the full bobbins to be dotted and replaced by empty filling carriers or bobbins.
When these series of filled bobbins have been replaced by empty bobbins or filling carriers and a bunch is to be placed upon the filling carriers or bobbins, it is desirable that the bunch building mechanism be placed in operative position to wind the bunch when the machine is first started, and on completion of the bunch to pass out of operative position inorder that the regular service traverse may be resumed for the completion of the wind. During the winding operation, the yarn guide or ring rail, it may be,
is progressively raised, so that on the completion of the wind, the yarn guide or ring rail will be at its upper position, and after the "full bobbins have been dotted and the empty bobbins placed in the machine, it is usual to wind back in order to commence the windings at a point adjacent the heads of the bobbins.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide means which utilizes the winding back operation to bring into'operative position a bunch builder mechanism of the general type shown and described in the Burdett Patent, No. 1,556,815.
The invention and new combination of parts will best be made clear from the fol lowing description and the accompanying drawings of one good form thereof.

Above the spindle rail 3 is the ring rail 5 having a series of rings 6 through which the spindles extend, each ring being provided with the usual traveler for guiding the yarn to the yarn receivers or bobbins mounted upon the spindles.
Extending from the girth 2 is the bracket 7 in which is mounted the rock shaft 8 hav ing an arm 9 secured thereto and carrying a roller 10 at its end on which rest the rods 11 connected to'the ring rail 5. The rock shaft 8 has secured thereto an arm 12, as
usual, provided with a weight 13 normally tending to lift the ring rail. and connected to the rock shaft 8 is the segment arm 11- car rying the segment 1:) to which is connected one end of a liexible connectirm 16 extending between the segment 1:3 and the builder mechanism. as will presently appear.
Mounted upon the cam shatt 17 is the main builder cam 18 having its cam peripheral portion adapted to act upon a tollower 19 mounted upon the builder arm 20 to etiect regular or main service traverse. The builder arm 2t) is pivotally supported upon the machine trame at 21 and is provided with a weight 22 which normally holds the follower 19 against the main builder cam during regular service or main wind. The parts so far described may be of any usual construction now well-known.
Mounted upon the builder arm 20 is the winding drum connected to a worm wheel 2% which is engaged with a worm 25 on a worm shaft 26. constituting part of the pick and winding back mechanism. The drum :5 has secured thereto one end ot the Flexible connection 16 which extends trom the segment- 15 to the builder arm. The flexible connection. in the present instance. is shown as a chain. but obviously. it may be otherwise formed. the essential being that the movement of the builder arm and pick or winding mechanism may be communicated to the ring rail.
The worm shaft 26 has a pick wheel 27 secured thereto which cooperates with the usual pick mechanism. now well understood in the art and consequently not herein illustrated. to let back on the flexible connection 16 during main service traverse. in order that the ring rail may be progressively raised to complete the windings in conical or weft wind. These parts may also be o't usual construction.
Wounted upon the builder arm 20 is a bracket 28 which may be adjustably secured to the builder arm by means ot the set or adjusting screws 29 and 30. substantially as more fully described in the patent to Burdett. No. 1.556.815.
The bracket 28 attords a convenient: support for a bunch builder worm mounted for movement laterally of the builder arm into and out of bunch building position relative to a cooperating bunch building device. As shown. the bracket 28 has a downwardly extending portion 31 in which is adjustably mounted the worm supporting pin 32 on which the worm 33 is movable laterally of the builder arm. As shown in the present instance, the pin 32 may be secured to the depending portion of the bracket 28 by means of suitable adjusting nuts 34:. and in these respects the construction may be substantially the same as that described in the Burdett Patent, No. 1,556,815; and suitable stop shoulders 35) and St are provided for limiting the movement ot the worm 23 as more tully described in said l'lurdett patent.
In accordance with the present invention. the worm which is mounted upon the builder arm as described. cooperates with a rotating device during the bunch building operation to lay the bunch or preliminary windings upon the bobbins. and in the pres ent instance ot the invention. the rotating device comprises a disk 37 which may be driven from any going part ol the niachin but is herein shown. as connected to the main builder cam 18 by a series ot bolts 1%;. 1 and 2, the construct ion being such that dur ing the bunch building operation. the herellcd edge portion 11) ot the disk engagt the worm E33 and by its rotative movement gradually moves the worm out ot the bunch building position. as tully described in thc Burdctt. patent hereinbe'l'ore mentioned.

The construction and operation 0t parts so far described may be substantially the same as the corresponding part in the Burdett Patent. No. 1.556.815. and need no further description.
ll hen a series of bobbins have been completely wound. it is the usual practice to lower the ring rail tor dotling. as hereinbctore stated. and when the empty bobbins have been placed upon the spindles. it is usual to wind back: that is. to turn the drum 231 which is connected to the pick mechanism. to wind up on the flexible connections 16 extending between the builder arm 20 and segment 15. in order that the ring rail or other yarn guides may direct the yarn to the yarn receivers or bobbins atthe lower ends thereof. and the present invention utilizes the winding back mechanism for etl ecting movement ot the bunch building worm into operative relation with the bunch building segment. as will now be described.
The drum has connected thereto a pin 44 mounted at one side of the shaft 1+) on which the drum turns. and during the winding back operation the pin 44 acts upon the upstanding linger 1 t) mounted on the shatt 42 to rock said shatt clockwise. as indicated in Fig. and perforce move the bunch builder worm 33 in an outward position from the builder arm into bunch buildingposition relative to the bunch building disk Hill 37', the builder arm. at such times being in its lowered position, so that the outward face of the worm is below the adjacent face of the bunch building disk, asindicated in Fig. 4.
Either one or both of the pins 44 and finger 45 is provided with a cam surface, so that the pin 44 is moved during the winding back operation, the pin 44 will more ef fectivoly act upon the finger 46 to effect movement of the worm into bunch building position. in the present instance of the invention, the pin 44 is shown as having the cam surface 47, and the finger 46 is shown as having the cam surface 48, so that as the end of the pin rides along the cam surface 48, the finger 46 is pushed outwardly, as indicated in Fig. 4, to effect movement of the bunch builder worm into bunch building position, the builder arm at such times being suficiently low to permit the worm to move outwardly under the disk.
The winding back operation is usually of fected by means of a crank handle 49, as indicated in Fig.1, and this manual effort on the part of the machine attendant is uti lized through the winding back mechanism to manually move the Worm to bunch building position.
It may happen at times that the machine attendant may lift the builder arm by one hand while he winds back the crank handle 49 withthe other, in which case the outer face of the worm 33 is liable to contact with the adjacent face of the disk 37, and the present invention therefore provides a safety device to prevent breakage of parts should this condition maintain during the winding back operation. Such safety device is more clearly indicated in Figs. 4 and 5 wherein the finger 46 is shown as mounted upon the shaft 42 between the collars 50 and 51 which are secured to the shaft, and between one of the collars (50 in the present instance) and the finger 46, there is a spring 52 which, should the builder arm be raised during the winding back operation so that the bunch building worm mav not'move to bunch building position, the finger 46 may yield as it ispushed outwardly by the pin 44 and thereby prevent breakage of the parts, with the result that when the machine attendant lets go of the builder arm and permits it to move to its low position, the spring 52 will serve to move the bunch building worm to bunch building position, so that when the machine is again started, the bunch or preliminary windings will first be laid upon the filling carriers or bobbins, until, when the worm has been moved laterally of the builder arm out of engagement with the bunch building disk, regular traverse will be resumed and the windings continue with regular traverse until the bobbins are fully wound.
The drum 23 to which the flexible connection 1G with the ring rail is secured, makes, approximately, somewhat less than a complete revolution during the winding of a set of bobbins, and consequently when the machine attendant winds back, he will turn the bunch building mechanism and drum 23 somewhat less than a complete revolution to effect the full winding back, with the result that at the end of the winding back operation, the pin 44 rests against the adjacent surface of the finger 46 in the position indicated in Fig. 4, the result being that as the builder arm is in .its normal lowered position during the winding back operation, the cooperation of the pin 44 and the finger 46 will move the bunch builder worm'to bunch building position, but should the r achine attendant lift the arm during the winding back operation, the finger 46 will be turned relatively to the shaft 42 without breakage of parts, and on the attendant dropping the builder arm, the bunch builder worm will be moved to bunch building position. Thus the spring mounting of the finger 46 on the shaft 42 constitutes a safety device to prevent breakage of the parts under certain conditions of winding back by the machine attendant.
Since the spring 52 is connected at one end to the collar 50 and at its other end to the finger 46, it is desirable to provide a stop between the shaft 42 and the finger 46 that the latter may be held in a substantially vertical position when not under the influence of the pin 44. To this end, one of' the collars (51 in the present instance) is provided with a cut-away portion 53 in which operates a projection 54 extending from the finger 46, thereby providing a stop shoulder 55 for engagement with a corresponding shoulder on the lug 54 when the finger 46 is in its normal or upright position, as indicated in Fig. 6.
What is claimed is:
1. In a builder mechanism,'the combination of a main builder cam, a builder arm, a bunch building worm carried by the builder arm, a winding drum on the builder arm, a rotatable bunch building device for l engaging the worm and restraining it from movement out of bunch building position until said device is rotated, and means actuated through the winding drum 011 Winding back the builder-mechanism for moving the worm relatively to the builder arm into bunch building position.
2. In a builder mechanism, the combination of a yarn guiding means for directing yarn to yarn receivers, a main builder earn, a builder arm, a drum on the builder arm, a flexible connection between the drum and yarn guiding means, a bunch builder worm on the builder arm, a rotatable bunch building device to act upon the worm to build the buueb, and means between the drum and worm t'or moving the latter relative to the builder arm into bunch buiiding position on, winding back the builder mechanism.
3. in a builder meclnuiism. the combination of a yarn guiding means for directing yarn to yarn receivers, a main builder cam, a builder arm, a drum on the builder arm. a flexible connection between the drum and yarn guiding me as. a bunch builder worm on the builder arm, a rotatable bunch build ing disl; to act upon the worm to build the bunch. and means between the drmn and worn'r tor .nmving the worm into bunch building relation with the disk on winding back the builder inechan m.
4. In a buiider mechanism, the combination ot a yarn guiding means for directing yarn to yarn receivers, a main builder cam, a builder arm, a drum on the builder arm, a flexible connection between the drum and yarn guidin means, a bunch builder worm bn thebuild. arm, a rotatable bunch building device to act upon the worm to build the bunch. and a train oi mechanism on the builder arm between the drum and worm including a a device for moving the worm relative to the builder arm into bunch building position on manually winding back the builder mechaaisn'i.
5. In a builder mechanism for spinning or winding machines, the combination of yarn guiding means for directing yarn to yarn receivers, a main builder cam. a builder arm having a winding drum, a flexible connection between the drum and yarn guiding means. a bunch building worm mounted on the builder arm for movement laterally thereof into and out of bunch building position. a disk cooperating with the worm to build the bunch and acting to automatically move the worm out 0t bunch building position at the completion of the bunch, and means cooperating with the drum on winding back to effect movement of the worm into bunch building relation with the disk.
6. A bunch building attachment for winding and spinning machines, comprising a rotatable disk. a builder arm having a worm mounted for movement laterally thereof into and out of bunch building relation with the disk. and means actuated on winding back th builder mechanism for moving the worm laterally of the builder arm into bunch building position.
7. A bunch building attachment, for winding and spinning machines. comprising a rotatable disk, a builder arm having a worm mounted for movement laterally thereof into and out of bunch building relation with the dish, and means including a yielding safety (lOYlCB actuated on winding back the builder mechanism t'or moving the worm laterally of the builder arm into bunch building position.
8. It bunch building attachment t'or spinning and winding machines, comprising in combination, a rotatable bunch building dish, a builder arm, a. worm mounted on the builder arm for movement laterally thereot' into and out of bunch building relation with the dish, a winding" back l'ilt'fCliflIllSll'l and means between the worm and winding back mechanism including a yielding element operated by winding Jack for moving the worm into bunch building relation with the disk.
9. A bunch builder attachment; "tor spinning and winding machines, comprising, in combination. a bunch building disk for laying yarn on yarn receivers without traverse, a builder arm, a worm carried by the builder arm to cooperate with the disk in building the bunch, and means carried by the builder arm for moving the worm into bunch building relation with the dish. ineluding the winding back mechanism, a worm setting finger and pin, one of which is yieidable to constitute a safety device and operated on winding back to move the worm to bunch building position.
10. It bunch builder attachment for spinning and winding machines, comprising. in combination. a bunch building disk tor laying yarn on yarn receivers without traverse. a builder arm. a worm carried by the builder arm to cooperate with the disk in building the bunch. and means carried by the builder arm for moving the worm into bunch building relation with the disk. including the winding back mechanism. a worm setting finger and pin. one of which has a cam surtace and operated on winding back to move the worm to bunch building position.
11. A bunch builder for spinning and wind ng mechines. comprising. in combination, a builder arm. a bunch builder worm and disk one of which is mounted on the builder arm for movement into and out of bunch building position. winding back mechanism. a pin mounted for movement thereby, a finger yieldably mounted on the builder arm and moved by said pin on winding back to effect relative movement of the disk and worm into bunch building position.
