Be it known that I, EPPA H. RYoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at VJaltha-m, vin the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Iinding-Machine, ofv which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a winding machine and particularly to improved yarn guiding devices for such a machine.
In the operation of the so-called feeler looms it has been found desirable to wind a certain amount of yarn upon the weft carrier at a given point in its length before the usual traverse winding is commenced. This preliminary winding, or bunch as it is called7 affords a reserve supply of yarn for use between the indication of the feeler and the insertion of a fresh weft carrier.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide improved devices for guiding the yarn in a winding machine by the use of which a preliminary bunch of yarn may be wound upon the weft carrier.
It is a further object of my invention to provide means for automatically introducing the regular traverse wind after a predetermined amount of yarn has been placed upon the carrier.
In the preferred embodiment of my 1nvention I provide `an auxiliary guide for the yarn, manually-adjustable devices for ren taining said guide in operative position, and automatic yarnoperated devices for rendering said auxiliary guide inoperative.
Vith these objects in'view my invention relates to certain devices, arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Two forms of my invention are shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aplan view of a portion of a winding machine with my improved yarn guiding devices applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 4l; Fig. 3 is a plan view of certain of the parts shown in Fig. 1 but showing the auxiliary guide inA inoperative position; Fig. L is a left-hand elevation of certain of the parts shown in Fig. l; Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the latch in a different position; Figs. @and 7 are plan views of a modifiedf orm of my invention with the parts in different positions; and Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of the modilied form, withthe parts in .the position shown in Fig. 6. invention as shown is applied to a winding machine of the type shown in my pilr Patent No. 1,061,013 issued May 6, In Fig. 1 I have shown the rotating spindle 10, the iXed longitudinal guide rods 11 4and 12, and the trumpet carrier 13 slidable on said rods and supporting the trumpet serve supply of yarn may be wound before the usual traverse winding is commenced. As yarn is run off in the shuttle, the yarn covering the grooves 17 will eventually be exhausted, permitting the feeler to enter one of the grooves and thereby indicate the filling change. One or more picks of filling must necessarily be inserted in the cloth before a fresh weft carrier can be placed in the shuttle and the yarn preliminarily wound the groove 18 furnishes the filling necessary for this purpose.
In a winding machine of the type shown, the spindle rotates in a iixed longitudinal position andthe trumpet and trumpet carrier move toward the tip of the weft carrier as increasing `amounts of yarn are wound upon it. y
The weft carrier 14 and trumpet 13a are shown in each of the figures in the drawings in the position which they occupy when the winding upon a newly inserted weft carrier is about to begin. The usual traverse yarn guide s shown at 20, this guide having a reciprocating motion `communicated to it by any suitable mechanism (not shown). For a full description of one form of such mechanism, reference is made to my prior patent.
TWhile Winding the bunch I use an` auxiliary yarn guide which in Fig. 1 comprises a U-shaped rod 21 slidable ina projection formed upon the outer Wall of the trumpet. @ne end of the rod 21 is provided With a tansverse head J8 and a coil spring 24k encircles one leg of the rod and normally forces the rod to the right until the head 23 engages the side of the projection 22. A latch 25 (Fig. i) is pivoted to an ear 26 upon the lower outer side of the trumpet and the upper end oit' the latch 25 is movable into position to engage the head 23 upon the rod 21, retaining the same in the position shown in Fig. l. When the rod 21 is in this position the end 28` of the rod 21 extends beyond the projection 22 and engages a second lug or projection 29, thereby forming a passa-ge through which the yarn is guided to the Weit carrier as also shown in Fig. 1. A spring 27 (Fig. 8) may be added to move the latch 25 toward operative position. The trumpet 18a has a vertical slot 13b positioned adjacent the groove 18 in the Wett carrier when the Winding of the carrier is about to commence and the latch 25 is provided with a projection 30 positioned to extend through the slot 13b When the latch is in operative position. In the operation of this form of my invention, the yarn is led through the traverse guide 20 and around the end 28 of the auxiliary guide rod 21 and the rod is then moved to the left until the latch 25 can be inserted between the head 28 and the projection 22. The machine may then be set in operation and the yarn will be guided by the auxiliary guide intothe groove 18, regardless of the reciprocating movements of the traverse guide 20. lhen the groove 18 is filled With yarn, as shown in Fig. 5, the latch 25 Will be forced rearivardljf until it is disengaged from head 28, When the spring 28 will move the rod 21 to the right as shown in Fig. 3, thus releasing),` the yarn from the control of the auxiliar f guide, and permitting the usual traverse Wind under the control of the traverse guide 20.
In the modiied form shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, an auxiliary guide 40 is pivoted to the trumpet at il and is provided with a spring' 42 effective tomove the guide to the inoperative position shown in Fig. 7. The guide Ll0 also carries a rearwardly extending lug 43 positioned for engagement by the upper end of a latch 25a by which it Will be retained in the operative position shown in Fig. 6. lWhen the groove 18 is illed With yarn the latch Will loe forced rearwardly and the spring 42 will immediately move the guide 4:0 to its inoperative position.
Having thus described my invention it Will be evident that other changes and modi- Iifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the claims and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but
lVhat I do claim is 1. In a Winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a weft carrier, a yarn guide having' a reciprocating motion longitudinally of said spindle and carrier` an 'auxiliary yarn guide mounted adjacent said spindle for Winding a preliminary bunch oi' yarn on said Wett carrier, and means to render said auxiliary guide operative and inoperative, said means being directly engaged by the bunch of yarn formed on the Wett carrier and being actuated thereby to render said auxiliary guide inoperative when the bunch oi yarn attains a predetermined size.
2. In a winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a iveft carrier, a yarn guide having a reciprocating motion longitudinally of said spindle and carrier, an auxiliary yarn guide mounted adjacent said spindle for Winding a preliminary bunch of yarn on said weft carrier, and means to render said auxiliary guide operative and inoperative, said means being directly controlled by the diameter oi the bunch of yarn Wound upon the Wett carrier.

In a Winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a Weit carrier, a yarn guide having a reciprocating motion longitudinally of said spindle and carrier, an auxiliary yarn guide mounted adjacent said spindle Yfor Winding a preliminary bunch of yarn on said Weit carrier, means to render said auxiliary guide operative, and additional means to render said guide inoperative, said latter means becoming effective only When a bunch of yarn of predetermined diameter has been placed on the bobbin and entirely independently of the number of revolutions of the'iveft carrier supporting spindle.
4. In a Winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a weft carrier, a trumpet, a yarn guide having a reciprocating motion longitudinally or' said spindle and carrier, an auxiliary yarn guide for winding a preliminary bunch of yarn on said weft carrier, a spring to move said auxiliary guide to inoperative position, and alatch to retain said guide in operative position, said latch directly engaging the bunch of yarn on the weft-carrier and being rendered inoperative by the completion of a bunch of yarn of predetermined diameter.
In a Winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a weft carrier, a trumpet, a yarn guide having a reciprocating motion longitudinally of said spindle and carrier, an auxiliary yarn guide, a spring. to move said auxiliary guide to inoperative position, and a latch to retain said auxiliary guide in operative position, said latch having a portion projecting through a slot in the side of the trumpet in position to be engaged and pressed outwardly by a bunch of yarn wound upon the weft carrier.
6. In a winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a weft carrier, a trumpet, a yarn guide having a reciprocating motion longitudinally of said spindle and carrier, an auxiliary yarn guide, a spring to move said guide vto inoperative position, and a latch to retain said guide in operative position, said carrier having a circumferential groove, said trumpet having a slot positioned adjacent said groove when the carrier is freshly inserted, and said latch having a projection eXtending'through said slot into position to be engaged and forced outward by the yarn wound in the groove of the carrier, outward movement of said latch permitting movement of said auxiliary guide to inoperative position.
7 In a Winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a weft carrier, a trumpet, said spindle and trumpet being relatively movable longitudinally, a yarn guide having a predetermined traverse relative to said trumpet, a second yarn guide having a fixed operative position relative to said trumpet, and means to render said second yarn guide automatically inoperative.
8. -In a winding machine, in combination, a rotating spindle driving a weft carrier, a trumpet, said 'spindle and trumpet being relatively movable longitudinally, a yarn guide having a predetermined traverse relative to said trumpet, a second yarn guide mounted on said trumpet, means to hold said second yarn guide in operative position on said trumpet, and means to render said second yarn guide automatically inoperative.
