This invention relates; to filling wound bobbins and more particularly to filling wound bobbins used in looms in connection with side slipping; feelers.
5 In looms of the automatic orfilling replenishing type it is now the general practiceto provide feeler mechanisms which upon substantial exhaustion of" the filling in the shuttle will initiate the operation of l the replenishing mechanism before the filling; in the shuttle. is completely exhausted. Any filling remaining on the filling carrier when, it is ejected from the shuttle constitutes waste, and many: attempts have. been made heretofore 'to minimize such waste, eithen by the use-ofdifl'erent types of feelermechanisms or by providing the filling, carriers or bobbinsiwitha reserve supply of filling or bunch, so that upon withdrawal of the service windingstrom the bobbin, thei feeler. mechanism will call for a change of'filling before complete exhaustion thereof in .the running shuttle.
Where bunches-have heretofore been used,.:it has. been. the common practice to provide a. feeler. mechanism which will cooperate with the"bunch on the filling, carrier; and call for a change of filling before the bunch {has been entirely depleted. In some cases, also, it hasbeen proposed to provide filling carriers with a bunch to cooperate with a. side slipping feeler, and suchside, slipping, feeler has at, times been arranged. to contact with the bunch on the filli'ng carrier or bobbin 'andat other times to' engage the regular service wind. ingson the filling. carrier until the bunch has been reached. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a filling-wound; bobbin' wherein the difficulties heretoforesexperienced in connection with a side slipping feelerare overcome, and sloughing or displacement ot the yarn by the side slipping'feeler is obviated. In accordance with the present::= invention, the filling carrier or bobbin-is provided with a head and a cylindrical. feeler step portion which; mergeswinto a tipwardly extending tapering portion, and on such filling carrier or bobbin the-present 6e invention provides a bunch of, filling-adjacent the head of the bobbin, a plurality feeler engaging filling wound upon the feeler step portion and an initial service windingwhich overlies the 'feeler step wind-5 ings andextends tipward beyondvthe end thereof, the result being thatwhen ithe serv ce windings have been withdrawn from the filling carrier or' bobbin, to expose the feeler step windings, the feeler-will'be held; from side slipping movement bythe-feeler step windings ona detecting beat, without causing the yarn to slough'or-snarl or becomeloose under the stress of theafeeler, and when the feeler step windings have; been withdrawn from the filling carrieraor bobbin, the feeler may side slip, leaving; on the filling carrier or bobbin as wastageonly the small amount of yarn remaining in the bunch. In. accordance with the preferred form of the invention, thebunch is wound upon the bobbin adjacent the head with minimum or. no. traverse, so that the. coils'of yarn lie close together, and the'fe eler step windings; 99 are wound upon the cylindrical portion; of the bobbin with a longer traverse than that of the bunch, so that the'windings on the feeler step portion of the bobbin-are more separated than in the bunch windings, while the initial service .winding extends from, the bunch beyond, the tipwarda end of the-cylindrical feeler step windings.

The present invention is more particularly intended for use in connection with a side slipping feeler, and while such type of feelor may be of any usual character, a simple and efiicient form of such side slipping feeler is herein shown, but the invention is not to be regarded as restricted thereto.
In accordance with the invention, the shuttle 1 may be of the usual filling teeler type provided with bobbin holding jaws 2 between which the bobbin head 3 is held when the filling carrier or bobbin i is within the shuttle. In the present instance, the head 3 of the bobbin is shown as provided with three rings 5 for engagement by the bobbin holding jaws, but obviously, any such number of rings may be employed as desired. As usual in this type of shuttle, the front wall of the shuttle is provided with an opening 6 through which the feeler 7 may pass to feel for the filling on a detecting beat of the lay.
In the present instance of the invention, the side slipping feeler comprises the rearwardly extending teeler men'iber 7 having teeth 8 at its rear end portion, which, when the service windings have been withdrawn from the bobbin, engage the feeler step windings, as will more fully appear hereinafter. The feeler member '2' is supported by the teeler stand 9 which may be secured to the loom frame, as usual, and the feeler has the lateral extension 10 to which is se cured one end of a spring 11, the other end of which is connected to the :teeler stand at 1.2 to normally exert a pulling Gild'otto move the :teeler rearwardly. The laterally extending arm 10 has a toe portion 13 which, when the feeler is in its rearward feeling position, is adapted to engage a stop 14 se cured to or forming part of the feeler stand. Extending through an opening 15 in the feeler stand is the transmitter 16 which, upon side slipping movement otthe ieeler, is moved lengthwise to initiate replenishment of filling. The rearwardly extending arm of the feeler 7 is adapted to engage a stop 17 on the feeler stand when the teeler is in its rearward feeling position, to thereby position the feeler. The feeler mechanism forms no essential part of the present invention exce t to the extent that itis a side slipping ieeler which effects replenishment of filling by side slipping movement when the filling is to be changed, and the particular construction of the :teeler mechan ism herein described may be varied indefinitely or any other type 01'? side slipping teeler may be employed.
The filling carrier or bobbin 1, as herein before described, has the head portion 3 and a cylindrical :teeler step portion 18 which extends from the head 3 towards the tip 01" the bobbin, and at a substantial distance from said head, as at 19, the cylindrical portion merges into a tapering portion 20 which extends towards the tip of the bobbin.
In accordance with the present invention, the bobbin 4 is provided with a bunch 21 adjacent the head of the bobbin, and as the amount of filling in the bunch is to constitute waste when the bobbin is ejected from the shuttle, the length of filling in the bunch may be regulated so as to insure a final full pick of filling on the last pick or" the shuttle prior to replenishment. The bunch is wound upon the filling carrier or bobbin with little or no traverse, with the result that the windings ot' filling constituting the bunch lie close together and form a compact mass, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The teeler step portion of the bobbin is substantially cylindrical, and as indicated in Fig. 2, extends longitudinally of the bob bin from a point a adjacent the bunch 21 to a point 6, slightly nearer the head of the bobbin than the point 19 where the cylindrical teeler step portion merges into the tapering portion 20 of the bobbin. On the cylindrical step portion 18 of the bobbin a series of teeler step windings 22 are placed between the bunch 21 and the point 19 where the cylindrical teeler step portion merges into the tapering portion of the bobbin. The traverse of the filling on the teeler step portion is greater than the traverse oi the filling in the bunch portion 21, with the result that the coils of filling wound upon the feeler step portion 18 of the bobbin are more separated than in the bunch 21, to thereby afford proper holding conditions for engagement by the teeth 8 of the feeler.
Overlying the feeler step windings 22 is the initial service winding 23 of filling, and as will be noticed more particularly in Fig. 2, such initial service winding commences adjacent the bunch 21, approximately at a, and continues in a single traverse beyond the tip end portion 6 oi the teeler step windings 22, as indicated in Fig. 2. In the windings illustrated in Fig. 2, the initial servicewinding extends not only beyond the end of the ieeler step windings 23 at b but may if desired continue along to the inclined portion of the bobbin beyond the point 19 where the cylindrical portion merges into the tapering portion of the bobbin, although this is not always essential.
When the service windings have been withdrawn from the bobbin to expose the feeler step windings 22, the toothed end portion of the feeler will act upon the feeler step windings and be held thereby from side slipping movement. Since the feeler step windings 22 are confined to the cylindrical portion of the ,feeler step, the side stress of the feeler upon the feeler step windings will not efliect any sloughing of the yarn, which may then be withdrawn from the feeler step windings during the subsequent picks of the shuttle, as indicated in Fig. 3. hen the windings on the feeler step 22 have been depleted, substantially as indicated in Fig. 4, the teeler is freed to its side slipping movement and the filling is then leading to the bunch 21 which supplies the requisite amount for insuring a ,full pick of filling on the last flight of the shuttle preceding replenishment.
It will be obvious from the filling wound bobbin herein described as an embodiment of the present invention that even with slippery yarn, such as rayon or artificial silk, the side slipping feeler will not cause sloughing ordisplacement of the yarn due to the stress of the feeler upon the feeler step windings, which are confined substantially to the cylindrical feeler step.
This nonsloughing condition of the yarn is of particular importance and enables the feeler to act upon the .feeler step windings at a point close to the tip end portion thereof, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that should the shuttle rebound in the detecting box, the feeler will nevertheless feel upon the i'eeler step windings and not engage the shuttle spring as is liable to happen when the feeler acts closer to the head of the bobbin.
hat is claimed is:
1. A filling wound bobbin for use with a side slipping feeler having a head, a substantially cylindrical feeler step portion and a tapering portion extending towards the tip of the bobbin, a bunch of filling having a minimum separation of winding adjacent the bobbin head, feeler engaging filling wound upon the cylindrical feeler step portion with longer traverse than the bunch windings, and an initial service wind overlying and extending tipward beyond the feeler step wind that the windings on the feeler step may hold the feeler from side slipping movement without sloughing the filling until substantial depletion thereof after the service windings have been withdrawn from the bobbin.
2. A filling wound bobbin ,for use with a side slipping feeler having a head, a feeler step portion and tapering portion merging into the feeler step portion, a bunch of reserve filling wound upon the bobbin adjacent the head, a plurality of layers of feeler engaging filling wound upon the ,feeler step portion with a longer traverse than the bunch, and a service Wind of longer traverse than the :teeler step wind overlying the feelerstep wind and extending onto the taperingportion of the bobbin beyond the teeler step wind that the stress of the feeler may be held by the feeler step wind until depletion thereof without sloughing the filling after the service wind has been withdrawn from the bobbin.
3. A filling wound bobbin for use with a side slipping feeler having a head, a cylindrical feeler step and a tapering portion extending towards the tip of the bobbin, a non-fceler-engaging bunch which constitutes waste, a plurality of feeler engaging layers of longer traverse than the bunch wound upon the cylindrical feeler step to hold the feeler from side slipping movement when they engage the feeler, and an initial service layer of filling wound upon the bobbin on the tapering portion beyond the ,feeler step windings that the filling may be withdrawn from the bobbin without sloughing under the stress of the side slipping feeler.
