Application July 11, 1935, Serial No. 30,874 Renewed October 22, 1936 '4 Claims. (01. 164-57) This invention relates to cutting devices and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient cutting device for use in rounding the corners of paper, cardboard or other easily cut sheet material.
Another object of this invention is to provide an extremely simplified construction for such a cutting device.
A further object of this invention is to provide the cutting device with a novel cutting knife.
Another object of this invention is to so construct the knife that it also serves as a gauge for gauging the cut of the cutting device.
A further object of this invention is to provide the cutting device with a novel form of adjustable gauge.
All these and other objects of this invention will become more readily apparent from the detailed description thereof which follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the cutting device. Figure 2 device.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the cutting device taken on the line 3:1:3a: of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of the cutting device, the section being taken on the line i.r l.r of Figure 3.

In the several figures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The cutting device forming the subject matter of my invention is used for rounding the corners of paper, cardboard or other easily cut sheet material or for cutting notches into such material. In the form illustrated in the figures of the drawing the device is especially adapted for ofice and shop use in rounding the angular cor ners of paper sheets or cards to keepthese coris an end elevation of the cutting ners from curling and give the Whole sheet a more ornamental appearance.
For this purpose the cutting device is mounted in a suitable housing I which provide a base 2 at the bottom and a platform or table 3 at the top; Near one end of the housing is mounted the cutting mechanism proper which comprises a stationary cutting blade 4 and a movable cutting blade 5. Both of these cutting blades have an angle shaped cross section with rounded corners and are held together by the guide channels 8 and 1 provided in the sides of the angle shaped upright 8.
The corner of the cutting blade is cut out to form an opening 9 therein having its upper end inclined upwardly to provide a triangular 5 cutter having oppositely inclined converging cut ting edges Hi and II which partially extend around the rounded corner of the angle shaped blade and meet in the middle thereof. The cutting edge l2 on the stationary cutting blade 4 10 is provided at the top thereof and the two cutting blades are normally held together so that the cutting edge I2 or ledger blade of the lower cutting blade is at the same level as the bottom of the opening 9 in the movable cutting 15 blade 5. A sheet of paper or other material may thus have its corner extend thru the opening 9 in the movable cutting blade as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 5 and the cutting blade moved down to have its angular and rounded cutting edges I0 and l I cooperate with the cutting edge l2 to shear off the corner of the sheet projecting thru the opening and transform the angular corner on the sheet into a rounded corner. In holding the corner of the sheet into the opening 9, the inner sides of the movable cutting blade serve as gauges for the sheet so that the sides of the sheet will automatically be tangential to the curvature of the rounded corner cut out by the cutter. 30
The cutting blades are held and moved back into their normal position after each cutting operation by means of the spring l3. This spring has a horizontal base section which extends thru the slot M in the corner of the stationary blade 4 and is suitably fastened to the base of the cutting device. The side of the base section of the spring which is located on the outside of the stationary blade 4 is formed into the vertically arranged spring loop 15, the free end of which 40 projects thru the slot H5 in the bottom of the movable cutting blade 5 and exerts an upward pressure against it. The other side of the base section of the spring l3, which is located on the inside of the stationary angle blade 4, terminates 45 into an angular spring finger I! which is provided with a horizontally projecting end l8 and projects thru the hole I9 in the corner of the stationary blade 4 into the vertical slot 20 provided in the corner of the movable cutting blade 50 5. The horizontally projecting end I8 thus forms a stop which arrests the upward movement of the movable blade'caused by the spring loop l3 and holds the movable cutting blade in its normal position in which the bottom of the opening 9 55 is level with the cutting edge l2 of the stationary cutting blade as illustrated in Figures 3 and 5.
The angular spring finger ll also serves to yieldingly force at all times the stationary cutting blade against the movable cutting blade in order to keep the cutting edges of both of the blades in shearing contact during each cutting operation. In this way the cutting edges coact efficiently with each other and produce a self sharpening action between them by their sliding contact. The top of the movable cutting blade has the handle or knob 2i suitably fastened thereto and with it the blade is manually depressed to operate the cutting device.
From the foregoing it will be noted that the cutting device will efliciently cut the sheet stock by simply depressing the movable cutting blade by means of the hand. The pressure exerted by the hand is suiiicient for cutting a number of sheets because the shearing operation is gradual and starts at opposite ends of the corner to be rounded and is completed at the middle thereof. No heavy pressure is thus necessary to operate the cutting device and no lever mechanism is therefore necessary for the operation of it.
For the purpose of varying the size of the corner cut by the cutting device an adjustable gauge is provided. This gauge comprises a plate 22 which has a limited sliding movement on top of the platform 3 and is guided in this movement by a depression 23 which nests into a corresponding depression 24 provided in the platform. A clamping screw 25 fastens the plate 22 to the platform at the depression thereof so that it can be held inany position within its limitedmovement on the platform. The plate 22 is provided with a pair of guide flanges 26, 26 which are normally in line with the sides of the movable cutting blade 5 so as to form continuations thereof. The converging edges of the sheet which is being inserted and cut by the cutting device thus engage the guide flanges and are additionally lined up thereby to have the corner of the sheet centered in the opening 9 in the cutting blade 5 so as to properly project therethru. By moving the plate away from the cutter the two flanges 26, 28 move rearwardly but retain a parallel position to the sides of the cutter so that when a sheet is placed on the plate with the edges against the guide flanges, a smaller portion of the corner of the sheet is centered and held to project thru the opening in the cutting blade sothat a correspondingly smaller corner is rounded off on the operation of the cutting device.
I claim:
l. A cutting device for round trimming the corners of sheet stock including a movable angle shaped cutting blade, a rounded corner connecting the angularly disposed sides of said cutting blade, said cutting blade having a substantially triangular opening in the rounded corner thereof to provide a triangular, angularly disposed and rounded cutting edge in said cutting blade across the opening provided therein, the angularly disposed sides of said angle shaped cutting blade on either side of said opening forming guide and gauge means to engage adjacent edges of sheet stock and hold the corner thereof projecting thru the opening in the blade, a cutting edge cooperating with said cutting blade and guide means for said cutting blade to cause the triangularly shaped cutting edge to round trim the corner of the sheet stock projecting thru said opening in said cutting blade between said triangular cutting edge and the cooperating cutting edge.
2. A cutting device for round trimming the corners of sheet members including a movable, angle shaped cutting blade, a rounded corner connecting the angularly disposed sides of said cutting blade, said cutting blade having an elongated opening with a substantially triangularly shaped end in the rounded corner thereof, a substantially triangular, angularly disposed and rounded cutting edge provided by the triangular end of said opening across the rounded corner of said cutting blade with the opposing angularly disposed sides of said cutting blade forming guide and gauge means on each side of said opening to permit the insertion of the corner of the sheet member into the opening in the blade in a predetermined position and to a predetermined depth, guide means for said movable cutting blade and a cutting edge cooperating with said triangular cutting edge of said cutting blade to cause said cutting blade to shear the corner of the sheet member projecting thru the opening from adjacent sides thereof.
3. A cutting device for round trimming the corners of sheet stock having a supporting platform, an angle shaped cutting blade movable in and out of said platform, a rounded corner connecting the angularly disposed sides of said angle shaped cutting blade, said cutting blade having a substantially triangular shaped opening thru the rounded corner thereof to provide a triangular angularly disposed and rounded cutting edge across one end of said opening, a cutting edge cooperating with said cutting blade and its triangular cutting edge and guide members on said platform in line with the angularly disposed sides of said cutting blade to form a continuation thereof and engage adjacent sides of sheet stock placed on the platform to hold the corner of the stock in a predetermined position projecting through the opening in the cutting blade.
4. In a cutting device for round trimming the corners of thin sheet stock, the combination of a combined cutting blade and guide member comprising a substantially angle shaped blade 5,
member, a rounded edge between the angularly disposed sides of the blade member, said blade member having a cutting opening therethru so as to have the sides of the opening converge in a substantially horizontal and vertical plane in the rounded edge thereof and provide a pair of substantially horizontally converging inclined cutting edges in said cutting opening, a fixed angle shaped blade member held against said movable blade member to have said movable blade member slide thereover, a pair of substantially horizontally angular straight cutting edges at one end of said fixed cutting blade so as to extend across the cutting opening in said movable blade member and cooperate with the cutting edges thereof and cause said cutting edges to cut from opposite sides of the opening toward the rounded edge in the movable blade with the imperforate portion of the sides of the movable blade holding the stock to be cut in a predetermined position during the cutting operation.
