Description

June 1, 1937. E, J HOERRES 2,082,290
RAZOR Filed Sept. 11, 1956 INVENTOR.
BY finer/0 d %er e5 ATT RNEY.
Patented June 1, 1937 UNITED STATS PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to razors, and more particularly to a type known as safety razors, employing a blade fastened into an adapter.
The object of my invention is to provide a means of reciprocating the entire head of the razor in a manner to permit a shearing effect in line with the cutting edge of the blade.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device that when manually operated, will produce this reciprocating motion during the process of using the razor.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device that is so designed as to permit theuse of a standard type of blade.
A still further object is to provide a device: of the character described that may be constructed economically yet affording a convenient method of assembly and permitting accessibility for the cleaning of parts and the replacement of blades.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing is a part and in which the separate parts of my improvements are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the assembled device.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cap plate. Fig. 3 shows a conventional type of double edge blades.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the blade guard.
Fig. 5 is a View of the sliding member.
Fig. 6 illustrates a wheel having serrated sides 0 and a knurled circumferential face.
Fig. 7 is a view of the bearing screw which supports a wheel.
Fig. 8 illustrates a standard type of spring.
Fig 9 is a perspective view of the frame and handle arrangement, and
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of the entire device illustrating the operativeness of the various parts.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same 10 shows a standard safety razor blade. It is held in position by a cap blade H which is provided with a project-, ing member l2 and two lugs l3 and I3 used for aligning the blade II) when in position. There is a blade guide [4 provided with a center aperture l5 to receive the member I2 and two apertures l6 and I6 adapted to receive the lugs l3 and I3 on the cap blade II. This blade guide I4 is also provided on both of its longitudinal edges with a plurality of grooves I! which allow the blade in to project outwardly thereby contacting the hair and having the grooves for protection of the skin.
A sliding member l8 engages a slot 99 in a frame and handle arrangement 20. There are tongues 2| on the member l8 which engage the grooves 22 in the slot i9 and guide its movement back and forth. A threaded aperture 23 disposed for receiving the projecting member 12 holds the blade in. position. Centrally disposed in the handle arrangement is a slot 2 3 having apertures 25 and Z5 transversely positioned. A wheel 26 provided with serrations 2'! on both of its sides and a knurled circumferential face. is designed to fit into the slot 24 and is supported by a bearing screw 28 inserted into the apertures 25 and 25'. The sliding member 18 is also provided with a contacting pin 29 at its lower edge. This pin 29 contacts the serrations 21 on the wheel 26 by means of pressure applied by a resilient member 30.
In operation the device is assembled by placing the resilient member 30 in position in the frame as shown. The sliding member H3 is then placed into the slot I!) so that the tongues 2i engage the grooves 22. Pressure is exerted on the member I8 against the resilient member 30 until the pin 29 passes the slot 24 in the handle. The wheel 26 is then placed into the slot 24 and is fastened by means of the bearing screw 28 through the wheel and the aperture and 25' in the frame 20. When pressure is released the resilient member will force the pin 29 on the member l8 against the serrations 21 on the sides of the wheel 26.
The blade l0 inserted between the cap blade II and the guard M is held in position and assembled with the frame and handle 20 by engaging the threaded projecting member l2 into the threaded aperture 23 and brought to a secure position so that the cutting edges of the blade ID are in parallel relation with sliding member l8.
By using the thumb or finger to turn the wheel 26 while the razor is held in the hand the serrations 2'! on the wheel 26 will actuate the contact pin 29, thus moving the entire blade assembly supported by the sliding member l8 and producing a reciprocating motion of the blade. The amount of movement is determined by the depth of the serrations and in manufacturing the device it is possible to make the serrations on one side of the wheel deeper than on the other side so as to provide more or less.
reciprocating motion if the user cares to reverse the wheel. There being but one contact pin only one side of the wheel is being used and the user may elect either the deep or the shallow serrations to cause greater or less reciprocation.
While I have herein shown but asingle embodiment of my invention for the purpose of clear disclosure, it is manifest that many changes may be made in the arrangement, size, and configuration of the various parts within the scope of the appended claims. What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in. the United States is:
1. In a safety razor a cap plate, a razor blade, a blade guard, a sliding memberjadapted to be fastened to said cap plate, said sliding member equipped with a contact member, a handle provided with a slot to receive said sliding member, a revolving member mounted into said handle, said revolving member provided with serrations on its sides to engage the contact member on said sliding member, a resilient means mounted into the slot of said handle to provide engagement of the contact member with said revolving member causing a reciprocating motion of the blade assembly when the revolving member is brought into motion.
2. In a safety razor a cap plate provided with depending members, a razor blade provided with apertures adapted to receive the depending members of said cap plate, a blade guard, a sliding member equipped to support said cap plate, razor blade and guard, said sliding member provided with a contact member projecting outward from same, a handle equipped with a slot to receive said sliding member, resilient means mounted into said slot for engagement with said sliding member, a revolving member supported by said handle, said revolving member supplied with a plurality of serrations on its sides to engage the contact member of said sliding member when acted upon by the said resilient member causing a reciprocating motion when said revolving member is brought into motion.
3. In a safety razor the combination with a razor blade mounted between a cap plate and guard, a sliding member adapted to support said razor blade mounting, said sliding member provided with a contact member projecting outward from same, a handle equipped with a slot to receive said sliding member, resilient means mounted into said slot for engagement with said sliding member, a revolving member supported by said handle, said revolving member supplied with a plurality of serrations on its sides to engage the contact member of said sliding member when acted upon by the said resilient member causing a reciprocating motion when said revolving member is brought into motion.
