The invention relates to coats and more particularly to mens suit and sport coats and to the fastening means used thereon for maintaining the coat in closed or other proper fitting position on the wearer.

An object of the invention is to provide a, coat of the character described in which the rear and side portionsof the coat may be drawn into proper or snug fitting engagement with the body of the wearer and at the same time leave the forward flap portions of the coat free to open and having a freedom of movement that has been heretofore obtained only by leaving the entire coat in open and loose hanging position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a coat of the character described which while affording a freedom of movement to the forward fiap portions of the coat as above will at the same time prevent the rear and side portions of the coat from blowing openand away from the body when exposed to a wind or the like, and will maintain all portions of such rear and sides of the coat in proper smooth fitting relation about the body of the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide a coat of the character described which while maintaining the various portions thereof aforesaid in proper fitting position will permit of the ready access to the pockets of both the pants and the vest or other undergarment without requiring the unbuttoning of the coat. Still another object of the invention is to provide a coat of the above character which may be buttoned at the front in the usual manner and which will provide for a selective and adjustable fitting of the back and side portions of the coat to the body of the wearer and an adjustment of the length of the forward flap portion left free to open.

The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood, however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawing and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.

As shown in the accompanying drawing the coat 5 of the present invention may be of a customary design of a manssuit or sport coat, and includes the usual back'and side portions which are arranged to surround the rear and sides of the wearer and wherein the'side portions terminate at the front in pair of open flap portions l and 8. As here shown, the usual coacting-buttons 9 and button holes II are shown adjacent the free edges !2 and l3-of the fiap portions so as to close the coat at the front, but, as will be understood, substantially any other form of fastening means as may be used on these coats may be adopted.

In accordance with the present invention I secure to the inner sides [4 and 16 of the flap portions in rearwardly spaced relation to the .free edges l2 and I3 and the'buttons 9 and button holes H, a belt I! which extends over its entire length at the under side of the coat and serves by reason of its securing, as aforesaid, todraw the rear and side portions of the coat into proper or snug fitting relation about the, body of the wearer and at the same time leaves the ends of the flap portions freeto openand to thereby afford these portions a freedom of movement which has been heretofore obtained only by leaving the coat in complete and loose hanging relation on the body of the wearer. Thus, as will be understood, the appearance of the coat from the rear and sides may be maintained neat and attractive while the wearer is permitted the comfort of having the front of the coat open and the convenience of ready access to the pockets both in the pants of the suit and the vest or other undergarment.

Preferably the belt is detachably secured to the inner sides of the coat so that the same may be removed should the wearer prefer to wear the coat in the conventional manner, and as a convenient means for providing such detachment, I prefer to sew to the portions l4 and I6 of the coat in rearwardly spaced relation to the free edges 12 and I3 and the buttons 9 and button holes H, a pair of buttons l8 and I9. For coaction with these buttons I may provide adjacent the opposite ends 2| and 22 of the belt a series of spaced button holes 23 so that not only may the belt be readily attached or detached to the buttons, but also an adjustment of the position of the side and rear portions of the coat may be provided for. Thus, as will be clear from Figure drawn together so as to engage the buttons with the two most inwardly positioned button holes, the shortest encompassing length of the waist portions of the coat is established, and as the buttons are moved to engage the more outwardly lying button holes, the waist portions of the coat may be accordingly lessened on the body of the wearer. Preferably, a pair of belt straps 24 are sewn to the portions l4 and I6 of the coat in rearwardly spaced relation to the buttons I 8 and I9 and are arranged to engage with the belt and thereby increase its number of points of attachment to the coat, and as a result more smoothly confine the attached coat portion to the body of the wearer;

As will be clearly understood in the case of the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the ends of the flap portions '1 and 8 which extend from the buttons l8 and I9 to the free edges l2 and I3 are left free to open over such length as defined, either-to hang freely at the front of the wearer, as in the case of the showing of the flap portions I in Figure 1, or the same may be folded back to'permit the wearer access to his pants pocket, as in the case of the showing of the flap 8 in Figure 1. In the embodiment shown in Figure 3, however, the length of the flap portion which is left free at the front of the coat may be adjusted to suit the wearer. This is here provided for by the positioning on the flap portions 1 and 8' of the coat shown in Figure 3, and between the buttons [8' and I9 and the free edges l2 and I3 of a plurality of spaced belt straps 26' which, as here shown, may extend substantially up to the line of the buttons 9" and button holes I I provided on the outer side of .the coat. In accordance with this arrangement the belt may be threaded through each of the belt straps 26 and in this: manner hold substantially the entire length of the flap portions in confined relation to the body of the wearer, or the engagement of the belt may be omitted; in the case of one or more of the belt straps, as shown in Figure 3 5 to permit an increased length; of free flap portions at the front of the coat.

I claim: 1. A coat having rear, side and front flap por- 2,080,944 2, should the portions I4 and I 6 of the coat be tions and coacting buttons and button holes on said flap portions for closing the coat at the front of the wearer, and a button secured to the inner side of each of said flap portions in spaced relation to the free edge thereof and spaced rearwardly of said first mentioned buttons and button holes, a series of belt straps secured tothe inner side of the said flaps intermediate said last named buttons and said first named buttons and button holes, and a belt having a series of spaced button openings adjacent the opposite ends thereof arranged for selective engagement with said second named buttons and serving to adjust the tightness of fit of the rear and side portions of the coat to the body of the wearer while leaving the forward portion of said flaps free to open and selectively engaging through said belt straps for regulating the length of said forward flap portions left free to open.

2. A coat having rear, side and front flap portions, a button secured to the inner side of each of said flap portions in spaced relation to the free edge. thereof, a belt having a series of spaced buttoned openings adjacent the opposite ends thereof and arranged for selective and detachable securing to said buttons for drawing the back and sides of said coat into a proper fitting relation on the body of the wearer while leaving the portion of said flapsintermediate said buttons and free edge thereof free to open, and a series of spaced belt straps on the inner side of saidflapportion intermediate said buttons and the free edges thereof and arranged for selective engagement with said belt for regulating the length of flap portion left free for opening.

3. A coat having rear, side and front flap portions, a belt, means for securing the opposite ends of said belt to the inner sides of said flap portions in spaced relation tothe free edges of said portions for drawing the back and sides of said coat into proper fitting relation on the body of the wearer while leaving said flap portions intermediate said means and edges free to open, and means on said flap portions intermediate said first means and said edges adapted for selective engagement with said belt for regulating the length of the flap portion left free for opening.
