Description

J. HEI DER MOP HOLDER Filed March 18, 1935 Patented May 11, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application March 18,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in mop holders and has for its object the provision of a mop holder wherein the soft yarn of the mop is removably but securely held in connection with the holder by means of a pair of pivotally connected jaws between the meeting surfaces of which the yarn is firmly gripped so that it cannot become accidentally disengaged from the holder. It is another object of the invention to provide a holder for the purpose set forth which is of strong and substantial construction, not likely to become broken or out of order, and capable of imparting extended service.
For a further understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the mop holder comprising the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof disclosing the clamping jaws of the holder in their closed positions;
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the jaws in their open positions;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line IV-IV of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, my improved mop holder comprises a pair of jaw members ll of duplicate formation, the same being formed preferably from non-corrodible metallic castings, the said jaw members being pivotally connected as at 2 so that the same may be opened or closed in a scissor or plier-like manner. The forward ends of the jaw members are of barshaped formation and include angularly bent ends 3 having reversely inclined terminating edges 4. The inner surfaces of the forward portions of said jaws are provided with integral pins or prongs 5 which are adapted to penetrate the yarn (not shown) of a mop, so that the latter will be securely and immovably held between the jaws when the latter occupy their clamping positions.
To effect the opening and closing of the jaws, the rear ends of the latter are formed with semicircular arms 6 which are shaped to receive the lower end of a handle pole 1, the latter, in the region of said arms, being provided with an opening for the reception of the shank of a carriage bolt 8, which also passes through aligned openings formed in the arm 6, one end of the bolt being headed, while the opposite end thereof is equipped with a wing nut or its equivalent 9.
In operation, the yarn of a mop is first inserted between the jaws of the clamp by opening the latter as indicated in Fig. 3. The jaws are then brought together by effecting relative approach between the arms 6. This may be first 1935, Serial No. 11,539
accomplished manually by finger pressure and later by rotating the wing nut 9 until the latter assumes the position disclosed in Fig. 2, wherein it will be noted that the forward ends of the jaws are drawn together and at the same time the clamp is positively secured to the bottom of the wood handle I. I also provide the jaws I, at positions contiguous to their pivotal connections 2 with laterally and outwardly directed finger extensions I0. These extensions are particularly useful in the operation of passing a mop between a pair of wringer rolls, inasmuch as the extensions enable the holder of the mop to be readily gripped by the fingers of the user, then positively drawn in an upward direction at the time the yarn of the mop is being squeezed by pressure rolls to expel water therefrom. To prevent the extensions ID from injuring the fingers of the user, they are formed with a substantial width to provide a flat surface which curves slightly at the outer end toward the forward end of the jaw members.
While I have described what I consider to be the preferred form of the present invention, nevertheless it will be understood that variations may be made therein from time to time without departing from the essential features of the invention, as such features have been expressed in the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A mop holder comprising a pair of pivotally united members, handle receiving means formed at one end of said members, jaw means formed at the opposite end of said members for receiving a yarn mop, and substantially fiat finger extensions formed with and projecting laterally from said members to facilitate the operation of drawing the yarn mop through wringer rolls.
2. A mop holder comprising a pair of pivotally united members, jaw means formed at one end of said members for receiving a yarn mop, handle receiving means formed at the opposite end of said members, and laterally projecting finger extensions slightly curved at their outer ends toward said jaw means formed with said members to facilitate the operation of drawing the yarn mop through wringer rolls.
3. A mop holder comprising a pair of members pivoted together at a point intermediate their ends, handle receiving means formed at one end of said members, means formed at the opposite end of said members for receiving a yarn mop, andlaterally projecting finger extensions formed with said members adjacent said pivot for facilitating the operation of drawing the yarn mop through wringer rolls.
