This invention relates to improvements in files for newspapers and periodicals. At the present time there are a variety of files upon the market for this purpose, but most of those commonly employed have either or both of the following drawbacks, Either the sheets are so held that inspection of portions of the reading matter immediately adjacent the center fold of the paper is impossible, particularly in cases where the sheets have not been quite centrally folded; or else the sheets are so held by the file that when the pages adjacent the front or rear of the paper are being inspected the file tends to close unless the sheets are held open at the desired place.
It is an object of the invention to provide a file for newspapers and periodicals wherein all the sections of a large edition, such as a Sunday edition of a metropolitan paper, may be so held that the entire page of every section may be readily inspected, even if the sheets, or some of them, have not been quite centrally folded.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a file wherein the various sections are so mounted that any page of any section may be perused without fear of the pages turning over of their own volition.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide such a file which is relatively cheap and simple to manufacture, and into which the various sections of a newspaper, or the various numbers of a periodical, may be quickly and easily inserted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a file having a plurality of supporting rods mounted therein at their extremities so that each rod is adapted intermediately of its length to extend longitudinally between the opposite sides of the inner folded sheet of a section or portion of a newspaper, and to provide means for supporting the extremities of the various rods so that any one, and the section of the paper mounted thereon, may be removed without fear of accidental displacement of the remaining rods.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a file with a central spindle, and a plurality of supporting rods parallel therewith and substantially equidistant therefrom, so that the center fold of the sheets around each rod is frictionally engaged between it and the spindle periphery.
Having thus briefly and broadly enumerated some of the major objects and advantages of the invention, I will now describe an embodiment Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 6 is an enlarged detail showing one extremity of a rod in engagement with one of the supporting flanges.
Referring to the drawing, l designates a spindle provided at one extremity with a suitable handle 2 for turning it. Upon the spindle l, and extending a short distance therealong from the handle 2, a threaded portion 3 is provided. 4 denotes a sleeve which encircles the spindle l throughout substantially its entire length but is somewhat shorter than the latter. One extremity of the sleeve 4 is internally threaded at 5 to coact with the threaded portion 3 of the spindle I. Shrunk, or otherwise suitably secured, around one extremity of the sleeve 4 is an outer bushing 6 having an annular flange 1 around its inner extremity in which a plurality of open-ended radial notches or slots 8 are formed. The inner extremities of these slots are countersunk at 811 on the outwardly disposed face of the flange l.
Axially slidable upon the bushing 6 is a collar 9 terminating at one extremity in an annular plate or retainer [0 of enlarged diameter. Formed in the plate ID, which is slidable over the flange l, is an open ended slot II. The collar 9 and its plate ID are rotatable upon the bushing 6 and flange I, so that the slot ll may be moved into registry with any one of the radial flange slots 8. The collar 9 is also axially movable upon the bushing 6., though this movement of the collar is preferably outwardly limited; in the present instance by a resilient split ring l2 which engages an annular groove l3 formed around the bushing 6.
Slidable axially upon the outer extremity of the sleeve 4 is an annular housing l6 closed at its outer extremity. Mounted between the outer end of the spindle l and the inner face of the closed extremity of the housing 16 is a ball l5. Around the inner extremity of the housing I6 is an annular flange l'l, similar to the flange l, which is provided with open-ended notches or slots I8 corresponding in size and number to the slots 8. The inner extremities of these slots l8 are also countersunk at I80, in the outwardly disposed face of the flange I'l. Axially. and rotatably movable upon the housing I6 is a collar l9 which terminates at its inner extremity in an annular retaining ring 20. open-ended slot 2! which is adapted to register with any one of the flange slots I3. 22 denotes a resilient split ring which is in engagement with an annular groove 23 formed around the housing IE to limit the outward axial movement of the collar l9. i
Extending between opposed pairs of slots 8- and I8 and provided at their extremities with enlarged heads 24a to engage'the countersunk margins 80. and l 81 of the said slots are supporting rods 25. Each rod 24 is adapted to extend longitudinally between the opposite sides of the the flanges l and H are so spaced that they pull the rod ends 240. outwardly and prevent disengagement of these rod ends from the countersunk slot ends 8a and Ma. This spacing of the rod ends is obtained by screwing the spindle I through the threaded portion 5 of'the sleeve 4 and forcing the housing It away from the bushing 6. When, the rods 24, or any of them, are to be removed from the file, the spindle I, through its handle 2, is turned so that the housing l6 may move sufliciently towards the bushing 6 to relax the pull upon the rod extremities 24a. The retaining rings in and 20 are then turned until slots II and 2| are in registry with the flange slots 8 and I8 which engage the extremities 26a ofthe rod 24 to be removed; then the rings are moved axially outward, usually until the collars 9 and [9V contact the split rings I2 and 22 which form stops to limit their outward movement. Then the rings l0 and 2!] are so positioned that the extremities of the rod 24 to be removed can be passed through the ring slots II and 2!, but the other rods cannot become disengaged from their slots Brand !8 due to the fact that the outer extremities of the latter remain covered by the unslotted portions of the retaining rings In and .The'purpose of' providing the longitudinal adjustment of the spacing between the flanges suflicient to permit some lateral movement of any one. of the sheets of, the paper section A in the event of any sheet being not quite centrally .folded or printed.
While in. the foregoing the preferredembodiment of. the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that alterations and modiflcationsmay be made thereto provided they fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Formed in the latter is an What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A file comprising an axial member, two spaced flanges mounted thereon for adjustment of their relative spacing, a plurality of rods each adapted to extend between the opposite sides of the folded inner sheet of a newspaper section, means on each flange adapted to engage one extremity of each rod and hold the latter parallel and in spaced relation to the axial member so that each newspaper section is frictionally held between its rod and said member, a retainer 3 carried by each flange preventing accidental disengagement of all the rod ends supported by its flange, each of the retainers having a slot therein permitting selective release of any rod end.
2. A file comprising an axial member, two spaced'flan'gesmounted thereon for adjustment of their relative spacing, said flanges having opposed slots formed therein, and rods the extremities of which are engaged by said flange slots and held parallel with said axial member, each of said rods being adapted to extend between the opposite sides of the folded inner sheet of a newspaper section, the centrally folded portions of the newspaper sections being frictionally held between the rods and the spindle and means on each flange preventing accidental disengagement of the rod ends from the flange slots.
3. A file comprising a. spindle, a pair of slotted flanges mounted thereon for adjustment of their relative spacing, a plurality of rods the extremities of each of which are engaged by opposed pairs of flange slots, each rod being adapted to extend centrally through a newspaper section and hold the central folded portion of the sec- 5 tion against the spindle, and means cooperating with said flanges preventing accidental disengagement of said rodextremities.
4, A file comprising a spindle, a pair of radially extremities each pair of which latter'engage the outer faces of opposed pairs of the flange slots,
each rod being adapted to extend centrally through a newspaper section and hold the central folded portion of the section against the spindle, and a retaining ring around each flange to prevent accidental disengagement of the rod extremities from the flange slots.
5. A file of the character described comprising a spindle, a housing mounted on one extremity thereof, a bushing mounted on the spindle inwardly from the other extremity thereof, an annular radially slotted flange on the inner ex' tremity of the housing, another annular radially slotted flange on the inner extremity of the bushing, means for varying the distance between the flanges, rods parallel with the spindle, the extremities of which rods are engaged by the slots in the flanges, and retaining rings movable on the flanges to prevent accidental disengagement of the rod extremities from the flange slots;
6. In a file, the combination as set forth in claim 5, wherein cooperating means are provided in the flange slots and uponthe rod extremities for holding the rods at the desired spacing from the spindle.
7. In a file, the combination as set forth in claim 5, wherein the retaining rings are slotted and are adapted to be turned so that the ring slots are in registry with the flange slots which engage the extremities of a rod to be, removed to prevent the accidental displacement of other rods during the removal of one of them.
8. A file comprising two flanges each having a plurality of radial slots extending from its periphery, an axial connection extending between said flanges for holding them in spaced relation, a plurality of rods each adapted to extend between opposite sides of a folded paper and a portion of the wall of each slot being formed to releasably engage one extremity of one rod so that the rods when engaged are so held spaced from the axial connection that a folded paper may be frictionally engaged between the latter and each rod.
9. In a file, the combination set forth in claim 8 wherein a retainer is provided upon each flange for positively preventing accidental disengagement of any of the rod extremities.
10. In a file, the combination set forth in claim 8 wherein means are provided for varying the spacing between the flanges to permit the release of the rod ends from the flanges.
11. A file comprising an axial member, two
spaced flanges thereon both slotted from their peripheries, means for changing the spacing between the flanges, and a plurality of rods having enlarged ends, each extremity of each rod being releasably supported by one of the flange slots, the sides of said flange slots being adapted to engage the rod ends when the flanges are at a predetermined spacing, said rods each being adapted to extend between the opposite sides of the folded inner sheet of a paper and hold it frictionally between said rod and said member.
12. In a file, the combination set forth in claim 11 wherein means are mounted upon each flange to prevent accidental disengagement of the rods from the flanges when the spacing of the latter is varied.
13. In a file, the combination set forth in claim 11 wherein a retainer is mounted upon each flange to prevent accidental disengagement of the rods from the flanges, and a slot in each of the retainers for permitting the selective release of any adjacent rod end.
