It is apparent that with the angular or noncircular boss 33 of cap member 3i inserted in the non-circular hole of plate 34, cap member 3l will be held against rotation about its axis; and with the upper` end `33 of coil spring 24 in the slot 35 of cap member 3|, while the lower end 23 ofthe spring is inthe slot 22o! the immovable vsupporting member I3, rotation of the -4 spring about its axis is impossible and the spring therefore placed under torsional strain when the door I0 is swung to either side of its normal vertical plane. It is evident, therefore, that as soon as the door is released the torque of the spring will be imparted to the door I3 through capy member 3l and its non-circular boss 33 to the plate member 34 secured tothe door.

Y The other o'pen end of the casing 31 is provided with a roller carrying block 43 against which the inner end of coil spring 4I bears, causing the block 43 to be yieldingly forced toward the openend of the casing 31 and hence into proximity with the outertube I1. The block 43 is slotted to receive aroller 44 whichl is rotata-` bly held in place in the block by a suitable pin 45 the rollerbeing of a size, or so mounted in the block, that its perimeter willextend beyond the end of the block 43 as shown in Figuresgand 3. ' it is apparent that the spring 24 will be placed under torsional or twisting strain-either in a winding or unwinding directionwhich induces the door to return to closed position as soon as the roller 44 has been moved out of a socket 49; the spring 24 being in normal condition when the door is closed.
The rear arcuate wall of the shell or casing I3 is formed with a slight bulge at 53 to provide sufilcient space for the arcuate ange 43.
Y The tube I1 is secured at its lower end to the floor member or pedestal I3, by means oi' a set screw II which will prevent tube I1 unscrewing and inner. tube 23 is held against rotative movement on top member 3l by suitable set screw l2. Oil or other proper lubricant maybe put into inner tube 23 before `the top member 3l has' ings will flow from tube 23 through lthe top bearing member 26 and will also pass through holes I3 in the inner tube 23, andV into the outer tube I1 which will also direct lubricant toward the ball-bearings and thus provide lubrication for an indefinite period of time and thereby present a noiseless door supporting hinge. At the same time'it is apparentthat a dirt and water-proof construction is also provided; a construction requiring no adjustment as the usual adjusting screws are eliminated and hence there are no screws to work loose.

What I claim is:
1.k A hinge of thecharacter described comprising a supportingmember adapted to-be secured to the iloor and provided with an upstanding spring-end holding portion; a coil spring verticallydisposed with its `lower endassociated with said holding portion of the supporting member, a member immovably secured to the door at the upper end of the spring and adapted to receive the upper endo! the spring; a tubular casing disposed about the spring intermediate of the two members and secured at its upper en i to the last mentioned member so 4as to move therewith while its lowerend has rotativebearing relation on said supporting member, -whereby .the door is rotatably supported in place. and a casing vadapted to iit about the tubular casing, the second mentioned member, the upper end of said supporting member and to lap `the opposite sides ofthe door and be immovably secured thereto, wherebythe door is held against lateral displacement.

A hinge' oi' the character described comprising a pedestal member adapted to be immovis secured to the door so as to move therewithl and also having an annular shoulder and a threaded lower end, the bottom of said member having a transverse slot; a vertically disposed coil spring 'whose lower end enters the slot in the pedestal member while its upper end enters the slot in the second mentioned member whereby the spring is given a torsional twist when the door is swung in either direction andthe door when released returned to closed position; a door supporting tube disposed about the spring with its upper end secured to the threaded end of the second mentioned member while the lower end of said tube is supported by the ball-bearing raceway, said tube being adapted to hold a lubricating medium and having outlet openings in the sides:
and a tubular member secured to the pedestal through said outlet openings in the door sul porting tube and to convey the same toward said ball bearing race-way.
