Patented Apr. 6, 1937 UNI-TED STATES PATENT oFFlcE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in chests.
One object of my invention is to provide the chest with an upper stationary tray whichl ex tends the full length of the former and also with a pair of hinged trays which are positioned in front of the stationary tray and adapted to swing outwardly in a horizontal plane when it is desired to obtain access to the bottom of the chest,
each of said hinged trays being one-half the length of the stationary tray and occupying approximately two-thirds of the width of the chest.
A further object of my invention is to provide the chest with a hinged lid having suitable means l5 to prevent the hinged trays from swinging open when the lid is closed.
A still further object of my invention is to provide one of the hinged trays with a suitable latch device to prevent the trays from being 20 raised when closed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view that will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and ar- 25 rangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, which is for illustrative purposes only and is therefore not 30 drawn to scale:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a chest embodying my improvements, the hinged trays closed.
Figure 2 is a similar view, the hinged trays open.
35 Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 4-4 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawing for a more particu- 40 lar description of my invention, and in which drawing like parts. are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views, my improved chest comprises the usual body l and hinged lid 2.
45 In carrying out my invention, the chest is provided with a rear upper stationary removable tray 3, which extends the full length of the chest and is approximately one-third the width of the latter. A pair of right front and left front 50 trays 4 and 5, respectively, each one-half the length of the chest and occupying approximately two-thirds of the width thereof, are hinged at their outer rear corners, as at 6, to the ends of A(Cl. 217-7) the stationary tray 3, and are adapted to swing open in a horizontal plane to permit ready access to the bottom of the chest.
Suitable stops may be provided to limit the outward swinging movement of the trays 4 and 5 5 and a latch member l is carried by the iront bottom, edge of one of the hinged trays aforesaid and serves to prevent the trays from being raised when closed. 'Ihe latch member 'l extends somewhat below the bottom of the corresponding 10 hinged tray and is provided with an inwardly and right-angularly bent portion 8 adapted to seat in a corresponding co-incident recess 9 in the front face of the chest body when said hinged tray is closed.
The hinged lid 2 is formed with a rim or moulding I0 which extends somewhat below or overlaps the corresponding edges of the hinged trays 4 and 5 and prevent the latter from swinging outwardly into open position when the lid is closed.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacricing any of the advantages of my invention, as dened in the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a chest of the character specified, a lower compartment, an upper stationary removable tray extending the full length and occupying approximately one-third the width of the chest, a pair of right and left front trays hinged at their outer rear corners to the stationary tray and adapted to open or swing outwardly in a horizontal plane, to permit access to the lower compartment, said last mentioned trays being each one-half the length of the chest and occupying approximately two-thirds of the width thereof, a latch member carried by one of the hinged trays and adapted to engage a corresponding co-incident recess in v the front face and body of the chest and prevent raising of the trays when closed and a rim or moulding carried by the edge of the lid and adapted to overlap or extend below the upper edges of the hinged trays when the lid is closed, to prevent the former from swinging outwardly.
