No. 2072553. Patented Aug. 27 1878.
imE-llmliml ii m UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
PELEG ROSE AND GEORGE C. ROSE, OF NORWVICH, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SEPARATING THE FIBERS 0F WOOD FOR PAPER-STOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,553, dated August 27, 1878; application filed April 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PELEG Host: and GEORGE O. Rosn, both of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Separating the Fibers of Wood; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,'which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section.
Similar letters of reference denote correspondin g parts in both figures.
This invention relates to that class of machines constructed for the purpose of preparing from wood a fibrous pulp to be used in the manufacture of paper; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of a scraper for separating the fibers of the wood, as we shall now proceed more fully to describe with reference to the drawing, in which- A is a suitably-constructed box or hopper, at one end of which is arranged a shaft, B, carrying a cylinder, C, which fits between the sides a a of the box.
Upon the cylinder C, parallel or diagonally to its axis, are arranged a series of scrapers, b I), having sharp edges, and of a construction generally resembling ordinary tools for scraping wood. These scrapers may be arranged any desired distance apart, and may be secured in any suitable manner without affecting the spirit of our invention.
D is a follower, arranged in box A and operated by a hand-screw, as shown.
To separate the fibers of wood, in the manufacture of pulp, rotary motion is imparted to the shaft B, carrying the scraping-cylinder. The block of wood is placed in the box and firmly held and pressed against the scrapers, which thus, in effect, are slightly pressed into the wood. The scraping-cylinder, in its rotation, separates and carries away the fiber, the fineness of which is regulated by the pressure upon the wood operated upon. Suitable provision is made for the reception of the wood fiber or pulp.
WVe are aware that numerous automatic feeding devices have been employed in this class of machines to feed the wood to the stone or scrapers-via, such as feeding-rollers, racks, and pulleys operated by weights, and rods operated by spring-ratchets, &c.; but to these We make no claim, as the fiber can be better regulated as to fineness by the construction shown and described herein.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a machine for separating the fibers of wood, the combination, with the rotary cylinder C, provided with the scrapers b b, of the follower D, having the hand-screw, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that we claim the forcgoin g as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
