5 Claims.

My invention relates to a combination hat and coat hanger to be positioned in the upper side of the top of an automobile, and the objects of my invention are:

First, to provide a very simple and effective means for supporting hats against the under surface of the automobile top;

Second, to provide an apparatus of this class which combines with the hat holder a means for supporting a coat hanger;

Third, to provide an apparatus of this class which may be readily secured to either a wooden or metal top; Fourth, to provide an apparatus of this class which is adapted to support two hats in opposed relation to each other from the support;

Fifth, to provide an apparatus of this class in which the hat holding members may be readily sprung to a position for readily inserting the hat; and

Sixth, to provide an apparatus of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easyto operate, efllcient in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.

With these and other objects in view as will I appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:

It will be here noted that the plate I is supported and positioned against the top by means of two of the lug members L positioned at diagonal corners of the plate I, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, with two screw members 5 adapted to engage said lugs.

Mounted over the base plate I is the clamp plate 2 which is substantially the same shape as the plate I and adapted to clamp down against the outer sides of the portions 3a and 4a and hold these portions 3a and 4a rigidly in position and the ends 32) and 4b prevent the same from turning or twisting as they are positioned in the hole la in the plate I.

The clamp plate 2 is secured to the plate I by means of bolts 6 positioned in diagonal corners thereof and the screws 5 also pass through holes in opposite diagonal corners, all as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing, thus securely clamping the members I and 2 together as well as clamping the portions 3a and 4a of the

3 and 4 rigidly in position.

The clamp plate 2 is provided with a downwardly extending lug 2a which is provided with a hole 21) therein which is adapted to receive a conventional coat hanger hook, as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawings, for supporting said coat hanger so that a coat may be readily positioned on the hanger for supporting a coat as well as a hat in position in the top of an automobile.

3 and 4 are also provided with V coil spring portions 30 and 40 which provide sufllcient resiliency and give to the members to permit them to be sprung downwardly, as shown in one side of Fig. 1 of the drawing, to permit a hat to be readily placed in the loop and when'released will spring back, as shown in the other side of Fig. 1, and support the hat in position against the under side of the top.

It will be here noted that there are provided two loop members one on each side of the support and separately supported in rigid relation between the clamp member 2 and the base memher i.

Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, com.- bination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a hat and coat hanger for automobiles, a base plate provided with a groove extending therein across the middle and provided with a central hole communicating with said groove intermediate its ends, a clamp plate secured thereto over said groove and the whole secured to the vehicle top, and a pair of opposed spring wire loop members with extended ends adapted to fit in said groove and with right angle turns fitting in said hole.

2. In a hat and coat hanger for automobiles, a base plate provided with a groove extending therein across the middle and provided with a central hole communicating with said groove intermediate its ends, a clamp plate secured thereto over said groove and the whole secured to the vehicle top, and a pair'of opposed spring wire loop members with extended ends adapted to fit in said groove and with right angle turns fitting in said hole, said clamp plate provided with a downwardly extending lug provided with a hole adapted to receive a coat hanger hook.

3. In a hat and coat hanger for automobiles, a base plate provided with a groove extending therein across the middle and provided with a central hole communicating with said groove intermediate its ends, a clamp plate secured thereto over said groove and the whole secured to the vehicle top, a pair of opposed spring wire loop members with extended ends adapted to fit in said aomeie groove and with right angle turns fitting in said hole, and means for securing said clamp member rigidly in the top of an automobile and securing said clamp members together.

4. In a hat and coat hanger for automobiles, a base plate provided with a single groove extending across the outer surface thereof at the middle and provided with a single hole centrally therein communicating with said groove at its middle portion, a clamp plate secured thereto forming a side for said groove and the whole secured to the vehicle top by means of screws extending through said base plate and clamp member, and a pair of oppositely disposed spring wire loop members with single extended ends adapted to fit in the groove at the opposite side of the hole in said base plate and provided with right angled turns adapted to fit in said hole whereby said loop members are prevented from turning and said loop members extend in opposite directions from said base plate and clamp member.

5. In a hat and coat hanger for automobiles, a base plate provided with a single groove extending across the outer surface thereof at the middle and provided with a single hole centrally therein communicating with said groove at its middle portion, a clamp plate secured thereto forming a side for said groove and the whole secured to the vehicle top by means of screws extending through said base plate and clamp member, a pair of oppositely disposed spring wire loop members with single extended ends adapted to fit in the groove at the opposite side of the hole in said base plate and provided with right angled turns adapted to fit in said hole whereby said loop members are prevented from turning and said loop members extend in opposite directions from said base plate and clamp member, and said clamp member provided with a centrally disposed lug with a hole therein adapted to receive a coat hanger hook.
