Description

ADVERTIS ING D SPLAY S IGN Filed Jan. l0, 1956 jwffvfo/e-' JOHN JENIEM Patented Mar. 9, 1.937
ADVERTISING DISPLAY SIGN John Jensen, London, Ontario, Canada, assigner to The Hobbs Manufacturing Co., Limited, London, Ontario, Canada, a body corporate Application January 10, 1936, Serial No. 58,521 In Canada March Z5, 1935 8 Claims.
This invention relates to ,advertising display signs.
My invention relates, particularly though not exclusively, to an advertising device adapted to advertise products which are offered for sale in glass or metal containers, bottles, jars, drinking glasses, cups, etc., such as beverages of all kinds, jams, jellies, condiments, canned goods, toiletries, etc.
10 Thedevice may be made of glass, wood, metal, cardboard, composition or other material, or a combination of two or more thereof, and may be used either in shops,.restaurants, and other places particularly where the advertised product is offered for sale, or, Where the material used in the device admits of so doing, outdoors such as on fences, billboards, etc.
It has been customary to reproduce the product to be advertised, on signs or boards, by means of painting or posting. In such signs, the attention of Athe public is attracted through the medium of contrasting of varied colours, or arresting reading-matter and similar means. An unsatisfactory feature of such display advertising signs or devices arises from the fact that such signs or devices are4 really only effective when Viewed from, or substantially from, the front, and do not effectively attract attention when seen from the side.
A particular object of my invention, therefore, is to more eiectively display and advertise such products or wares by attaching a section of an actual container to the sign or board, upon which board advertising copy or matter relating to the product may be also Written or applied. Thus, the container or part of it will stand out in relief. A sign so made Will have the effect of rendering the advertising very eiiective whether the device be viewed from the front, side, from above or below.
A further object is to create an optical illusion that the whole container is actually there, this by means to be described hereinafter.
A further object is to bring about the results above mentioned while at the same time reducing to a minimum the resultant shadow cast upon the advertising matter by the section of the container, and to reduce the obstruction to View of the advertising matter which might be caused by the presence of part of the container.
A still further object is to make it possible to use for the sign proper or panel, very thin material which will still be adapted to have superposed thereon, or afxed thereto, the section of the container.
Other and further objects may be seen as the description of my invention progresses.
In the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various .iigures Figure 1 is a front elevation of the preferred form of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-section, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 3-3 in Figure v1.
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 3 but showing a slight modification.
Referring now by numerals to the drawing, l indicates a panel. 2 are uprights from a base 4, the uprights being grooved as at 3 to receive the panel l.
B indicates a section of a bottle, which is preferably slightly less than one half of the bottle.v
As shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4, the section B is attached to the panel as with glue or other adhesive material Q5. That .portion of the panel il which lies within the confines of the bottle section may be coated as at 6 with silver leaf, tinsel, or otherwise adapted or treated to render that portion of the panel capable of reflecting the bot-- tle section. It will thus be seen that the refleeting surface or portion of the panel will reflect vthe bottle section, with the result that one sees a Whole bottle.
In Figure 4, the panel IA is shown as made of metal whose front face may be nickel-plated so as to be capable of reflecting the image of the bottle section.
If desired, the panel may be made of glass, and that portion of the panel lying within the Comines of the bottle section treated so as to render the same capable of reflecting the bottle section, or else, the Whole, or an appreciable portion of the glass so treated.
The bottle section, preferably on the inside thereof, may be partly coloured as at 1, to similate the contents of a bottle.
By using a section of a bottle or other container rather than a Whole container, any obstruction of vision of the advertising matter, Pale Ale for instance shown in Figure 1, is reduced to a minimum. At the same time, the reiiected image of the container section is such as to create the illusion that a whole container is there.
By using a glass bottle section, any obstruction of vision of the advertising matter is still further reduced and very little, if any, shadow is cast upon the panel.
It will be understood that the panel may be suspended, nailed or screwed to a wall or counter, in which case the uprights 2 and base 4 would be dispensed with.
It is possible that in some cases the product to be advertised may be inserted into the space formed between the container section B and the panel I, when the artificial colouring 'I would be dispensed with.
What I claim is:
1. An advertising display sign comprising a support; a section of a transparent container affixed to said support, and means on said support for reecting the section of container so as to give the impression that the complete container is there, and for reflecting light through the section of the container so as to offset any shadow cast on said support by the presence of the container, substantially as described.
2. An advertising display sign comprising a support having a fragmentary part of a transparent container imposed thereon; means on said support for reflecting said container and operating to dispel any shadows thereby cast on the base, and operating to reduce also the apparent obstruction of view created by the presence of the fragmentary portion of the container, substantially as described.
3. An advertising display sign comprising a support having a section of a container superimposed thereon; means for reflecting the container so as to give the impression that the Whole container is there and to dispel any shadows cast on the advertising copy; and means for giving the impression that the container is lled with the product desired to be advertised, substantially as described.
4. An advertising display sign comprising a support having a section of a container capable of being lled, with its simulated contents superimposed thereon; means for reflecting the section of the container so as to give the impression that the Whole container is there, and for dispelling the shadows cast on the base by the presence of the section of the container, substantially as described.
5. An advertising display sign for use out of doors or otherwise, adapted to attract attention from the side as well as from the front View, comprising a support having a section of a container in relief; means for reflecting the container to give the impression of the whole containeibeing there, and for dispelling the shadows cast on the advertising copy by the section of the container; means for filling the section of the container with the product to be advertised, or means of giving the impression that the same is so nlled, substantially as described.
6. An advertising display sign comprising a reecting panel, and a section of a container secured to said panel with the edges thereof adjacent said panel, said section of container having a part of its surface treated to give the visual impression that said container is partly lled with the product desired to be advertised.
'7. An advertising display sign comprising a reecting panel, a section of a transparent container having the edges thereof adjacent to said panel, and `means within the compartment formed between the section of said container and said panel adapted to give the visual impression that the container contains the product desired to be advertised.
8. An advertising display sign comprising a reflecting panel, and a section of a transparent container having the edges thereof glued to said panel to form a liquid-tight compartment, said container being disposed with its inlet portion directed upwardly whereby the product to be advertised may be stored in said compartment.
