BUTTON Filed Jan. 18, 1936 Patented Mar. 9, 1937 BUTTON Joseph Komorous, "Riverside, Ill., assignor to Parisian Novelty Company, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application January 18, 1936, Serial No. 59,767
1 Claim.
My invention relates more particularly to devices for display purposes such as, and more especially, buttons, particularly celluloid covered buttons, bearing display matter, as for example advertising.
My more particular objects are to provide a device of the character stated of such construction that it will be more attractive to those wishing to use such devices; will be adapted, by easy manipulation, for assembly by the user for displaying any of several forms of display matter and for ready substitution of one form of display matter for another; and other objects as will be manifest from the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front face view of a button constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear face view of the same.
Figure 3 is a rear face view of the device with the rear cover plate removed.
Figure 4 is a front view of the front section of the device.
Figure 5 is an enlarged broken sectional view of the device, the section being taken at the line 5 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and
Figure 6, a fragmentary edge view of the device.
Referring to the particular illustrated embodiment of the invention which is in the form of a button provided with means for attaching it to an object, such as for example of cloth, the button is formed of two separable front and back sections [0 and II, respectively, of such form as to permit them to be readily assembled together and disassembled, as desired, and a third section l2 interposed between the sections Ill and l l and provided for displaying through the front face of the button any suitable display matter, such as for example, an advertisement.
The front section III is shown as comprising a rim l3 of relatively stifi material, as for example sheet metal, covered by a sheet 14 of transparent celluloid or other desirable material held in place by an outwardly and forwardly turned annular flange IS on the rim l3, the rim I3 and sheet l4 forming a disklike structure.
If desired, the rim portion l3 may be utilized for the display of any suitable matter, such as for example, printed advertising, which preferably, however, would be displayed upon a ring [6 of sheet material, such as for example paper, which covers the face of the rim l3 and thus becomes interposed between the rim l3 and the celluloid sheet M, the rim l3 in effect forming a marginal frame for the central transparent sight area thus provided by the portion of the clear celluloid sheet [4 registering with the central opening in the rim l3.
The section II is preferably formed of a sheet metal disk having a rim portion l1 terminating in an outwardly extending annular flange l8 a portion of which is shown as offset rearwardly as indicated at l9, the rim l1 being of such diameter as to snugly telescope with the rim l3 and be held assembled therewith against accidental separation. The shape and size of the section I l is preferably such, as shown, as to cause the nonoffset portion of the flange l8 to bear against the back edge of the rim l3, when the disk section I I it bottomed in the section III against the section Asan example of a means for securing the button in place, as for example on a cloth object, a safety pin 20 is secured to the back face of the disk section II.
The intermediate section 12 is provided for the display through the large central sight area of the section ID, of any suitable display matter, such as for example a printed advertisement. The section 12 may be formed of sheet paper or any other suitable material and is preferably of disk form or slightly greater diameter than the diameter of the central sight area referred to, with radial tongues 2| extending outwardly therefrom which cause the marginal portion of the section l2 to be recessed and which serve to properly center the section I2 relative to the sight area upon assembling the sections In and I2 together and to afford means whereby the section I2 may be readily disassembled from the section I 0 by inserting an improvised tool under the edge of one of the tongues 2| and prying the section I2 out of place.
By providing the device .with the central sight area referred to and the separate section 12 any desired selection of display matter may be rendered exposed to view at the front face of the button; and the provision of the frame-forming rim l3 permits of the displaying thereon, if desired, of any permanent display matter, such as advertising, as shown.
The provision of the flange l8 aifords a part between which and the rim IS a tool may be inserted for readily prying the sections I0 and H apart, the provision of the oii'set portion l9 of the flange l8 permitting the main portion of this flange to lie against the rim I3 while affording a space between the portion l9 and the rim [3 of such depth as to permit of the ready separation of the sections I0 and H by inserting a wide range of comparatively blunt devices, such as a screw driver, into the space between the portion I9 and the rim l3 and prying these sections apart.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be embodied in other forms of structure and the structure shown may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of the invention. Thus, by way of example, the flange I8 may be unprovided with the offset portion I 9 requiring the use of a comparatively sharp edge tool to separate the sections l0 and H, or, in the absence of the ofi'set portion I9, the section may be made of such size and proportions that the flange l8 will be slightly spaced from the section I 0 when the section II is bottomed in the section In to permit a comopening in the rim portion, and means holding 10 said member in place, said member having spaced apart projections at its marginal edge extending radially outwardly from points on said member adjacent the edge of said opening, whereby crinking of the marginal edge of said flexible member 15 is avoided in the application of pressure applied by said means against the rear face of said member.
