GARNISHING DEVICE Filed June 19, 1936 12 14 v 13 42 f wmm M; 1 ma -15% Www {if "MM Zinnenbr HARULD E. MERGER 12M attorney 5 Patented Mar. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 6 Claims.
This invention relates to garnishing means especially adapted for use in show cases employed for the display of meats and other edibles.
It has been customary to use the leaves of parsley and other green plants for garnishing meats in display trays in show cases but such plants are often times expensive and they soon become wilted, soiled and unsightly The object of my invention is to provide an artificial garnishing means of simple and economical and durable construction, easily handled and placed in position of use, easily washed and capable of repeated use for a long time.
The invention is embodied in the example of construction and details thereof herein shown and described, the feature of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 illustrates in plan view a perforated strip of metal as prepared for bending to form the main supporting means.
Fig. 2 is an edge view showing such a strip bent and also as containing a cooperating wire or rod in the perforations.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bent strip without the rod therein.
Fig. 4 is a fractional view of one side of the garnishing structure.
Fig. 5 is a view of the opposite side of the structure shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a plan View looking at the lower edge of the completed structure.
In the views I0 designates a metal strip which can be of thirty gauge galvanized sheet iron and 5 of suitable width. Said strip is perforated with pairs of closely spaced perforations II-, II, said pairs being made widely spaced apart in the strip so that upon a regular and serpentine or zig-zag bending of the strip, as indicated, the
holes II, II, aline to receive the Wire I2. The
. strip I0 is bent or corrugated so that the loops or legs below the perforations are longer than those above the said perforations thereby forming legs to rest on a floor.
The garnishing element consists of a primarily fiat flexible strip or ribbon of suitable material l3 closely gathered along one margin where it is reinforced and held by a narrow strip or tape I4 so as to cause a permanent ruffling of the wider portion of the strip. The strip i3 is preferably of soft rubber or rubberized fabric and of a green color and the binding and reinforcing strip or tape l4 preferably of similar material is sewed or cemented to the wider strip at the time the ruf- 55 fling is produced in the wider strip so as to make permanent the rufiling and permit safe perforation of the reinforced margin, as hereinafter stated.
In securing the garnishing element to the base member folds of the said garnishing element at the bound edge thereof are shoved between the bends of the base member at its upper side and the wire rod I2, which is provided with a pointed piercing end, is shoved through the perforations II and the reinforced margin of the garnishing element. The wire rod retains the garnishing element in proper position on its support and prevents said element from being pulled out in handling.
These garnishing devices, according to my said invention, can be made in any suitable lengths. In manufacturing the article the opposite ends of the garnishing element are bent around and clamped in or by the end of the supporting strip as shown in plan view Fig. 6. Ordinarily the friction on the wire rod l2 after insertion in the article will be sufficient to hold it permanently in place but to prevent accidental removal said wire can have its protruding ends bent a little as shown.
In practice retail butchers usually display meats and other articles in a show case or in trays placed in the case. My garnishing devices can be suitably arranged on the floor of the case in position adjacent to and surrounding the articles displayed or pans containing the articles so as to enhance the appearance of the exhibit and render the same attractive to customers.
The forms of the parts and their sizes can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A garnishing device including a ruffled ribbon of rubber having a reinforcing margin, a supporting strip bent to serpentine form having perforations below the bends thereof, said ribbon of rubber being inserted at its reinforced margin between the folds of said strip, and a rod extended through the perforations of said supporting strip and said reinforced margin of the ribbon.
2. A garnishing device including a ruflled ribbon of rubber having a reinforced margin, a supporting strip regularly bent to serpentine form and having a line of perforations nearer the upper bends than the lower, said ribbon of rubber being inserted at its reinforced margin between the folds of said supporting strip, and a rod extended through said line of perforations and said reinforced margin of the ribbon.
3. In a garnishing device of the class described, a corrugated strip of stiff bendable material, bends thereof at the lower side of said strip constituting legs, and a ruffled ribbon of decorative material having one of its margins inserted and held between the bends at the upper side of said corrugated strip.
4. In a garnishing device of the class described, a corrugated strip of stiff bendable material, bends thereof at the lower side of said strip constituting legs, and a rufiied ribbon of decorative material having folds of one of its margins inserted and held between the bends at the upper side of said corrugated strip.
5. In a garnishing device of the class described, a corrugated strip of stiff bendable material, bends thereof at the lower side of said strip contituting legs, and a ribbon of decorative material having one margin ruflied and its other margin gathered and provided with a binder to make permanent said ruffled margin, said bound margin held between the bends of the corrugated strip at the upper side thereof 6. A garnishing device of the kind described, including a corrugated strip of stiff bendable material, the lower side of said strip constituting supporting legs, said corrugated strip perforated longitudinally above the center line thereof, a rufiied ribbon of decorative material having one of its margins inserted between the bends at the upper side of the said corrugated strip, and a rod extended through said perforations and the ribbon to hold the latter in the said corrugated strip.
