Preferably, the lugs for the back jaw hinge 4, the apertured lug E--B and the resilient formation 9 of the latch, are stamped out and shaped up from one piece of sheet metal, which is soldered to the underside of the front jaw and becomes, in effect, an integral part of it.
As will be seen from the drawing and as the foregoing description makes clear, the clips are of identical, symmetrical construction and may therefore be interchangeably used in the assemblage, having no right and left hand peculiarity.
The third member of the assemblage is the pincarrying plate, indicated at I0. The pin II, hinged to the plate at l2, and having its free pointed end held by a retaining catch I3, mounted on the plate, is of the usual form and mounting well known in the art.
Extending outward at right angles and centrally from the pin-carrying section of the plate I0, there is a'section I4, having an enlarged end I5. This section is designed to bridge or overlap the abutting ends of the front jaws of the clips, when in assembled relation, to prevent independent movement of the clips, as previously pointed out.
Extending outward in opposite directions from a mid point of the section I4 and in parallel relation to the pin-carrying section of the plate I0, there are two sections I6, I6, the cross sectional form of which corresponds to the rectangular guide openings 8, 8 in the lugs 6, 6 of the front jaw. 'I'hese extensions I 6, I 6 of the pin-plate terminate in bevelled ends I'I, I'I, which are designed, as either extension is 'slidably entered in either guide opening 8, to ride under and cam up the resilient latch element 9 of the front jaw, which is located just beyond the guide. Thus cammed up, the latch element 9, is positioned for engagement with its cooperating latch element of the pin-plate, as the plate is pushed home. The pin-plate latch element, as shown, is in the form of a rectangular aperture I8, cut in each of the plate extensions I6, I6.
Constructed as described, the members of the assemblage may be said to be secured in interlatching, rather than interlocking relation, as the latch elements are shaped to yield and ride into engagement, as the members are pressed together and to similarly yield and ride out of engagement, as the members are pulled apart.
As the operation and many important advantages of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing, it will not be necessary to further describe the same.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A brooch assemblage comprising twin clips each having an ornamental front jaw and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jaws being provided on their underside with suitable guides and a resilient formation in line with but separate and independent of each of the guides, and a pin-carrying plate slidable in the aforesaid guides into interlatching engagement with the resilient formations of the front jaws to secure the clips in assembled relation to form a brooch.
2. A brooch assemblage comprising twin clips each having an ornamental front jaw and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jaws being provided on their underside as an integral part thereof with suitable guides and a resilient formation in line with but separate and independent of each of the guides, and a rigid, non-resilient pin-carrying plate slidable in the aforesaid guides into interlatching engagement with the resilient formations of the front jaws to secure the clips in assembled relation to form a brooch.
3. A brooch assemblage comprising twin clips each having an ornamental front jaw and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jaws being provided on their underside with' suitable guides and a resilient formation in line with but spaced apart from each of the guides, and a pin-carrying plate carrying latch elements, the said pinplate being slidable in the aforesaid guides to move its latch elements into engaging relation with the resilient formations of the front jaws to secure the clips together to form a brooch.
4. A brooch assemblage comprising twin clips each having an ornamental front jaw and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jaws being provided on their underside with suitable guides and a resilient formation in line with but spaced apart from each of the guides, and a rigid, nonresilient pin-carrying plate carrying integrally formed latch elements, the said pin-plate being slidable in the aforesaid guides to move its latch elements into engaging relation with the resilient formations of the front jaws to ysecure the clips together to form a brooch.
5. A brooch assemblage comprising twin clips each having an ornamental front jaw and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jaws being provided on their underside with suitable guides and resilient formations in line with the guides, and a pin-carrying plate slidable in the aforesaid guides and having cam-like terminals and a latch element in the rear of each terminal, the cam-like terminals operating to position the resilient formations of the front jaws for entrance and engagement of the latch elements therewith to secure the clips in assembled relation.
6. A brooch assemblage comprising twin clips each having an ornamental front jawV and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jaws being provided on their underside with suitable guides and a resilient latch member in line with each of the guides, the said latch members being limited to movement in a plane perpendicular to the un-A derside of the front jaw, and a pin-carrying plate slidable in the aforesaid guides into interlatching engagement with the resilient latch members of the front jaw to secure the clips in assembled relation.
7. A brooch assemblage comprising twin clips each having an ornamental front jaw and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jawsbeing provided on their underside with suitable guides and a resilient latch member in line with each of the guides, the said latch members being limited to movement in a plane perpendicular to the underside of the front jaws, and a pin-carrying plate slidable in the aforesaid guides and having camlike terminals and a latch element in the rear of each terminal, the cam-like terminals operating to raise the resilient latch members of the front jaws for entrance and engagement therewith of the latch member of the pin-plate to secure the clips together.
8. A brooch assemblage comprising ytwin clips each having an ornamental front jaw' and a back jaw hinged thereto, the front jaws being provided on their underside with suitable guides and a resilient latch member formed as a bent-over portion of each guide, the said latch members being limited to up and down movement relative to the underside of the front jaws, and a pincarrying plate slidable in the aforesaid guides and having cam-like terminals and an aperture in the rear of each terminal, the cam-like terminals operating to raise the resilient latch members of the front jaw preparatory to such latch members entering into engagement with the apertures of the pin-carrying plate to secure the clips together.
