This invention relates to pinking machines for cutting a wavy non-ravelling edge in fabricarticles. In garments, a generous strip ,.offabric. is provided at theseams for futureralteration. Be-
.xcause of the tendency, to unravel, itis customary to trim the raw'fabric'tor azwavyorspinked edge.
The machine-disclosed herein accomplishes the above and makes it impossible for an operatorxto trim- 01T more than ;a narrow strip fromthe Loffabric. `In machinesofthe present time, it is necessary for thegoperator to `watch ther'guiding of the fabric into the machine carefully. :If the operators attention wavers,` it v'frequently `happens kthat the fabric will be cut deeper thandelalsirable and may even-,spoil the entire article. Furthermora in machines `inuse, the cutter is above the .work plateand constitutes -an ever present danger to thejfingers` Because Yofthe tortuous cutting edge, any careless touchingof Z0 the cutter while in motiondraws theflngersinto cutting position.
An object kof this inventionis" to devise a' machine that will be'simple; cheap, positive in action and will only cut off a predetermined narrow strip of fabric. A further object is to devise a machine that will be safe to operate, will present a smooth revolving surface above the workplate and will tend to push out of danger any article or nger laid on the cutting roller.
Other and additional objects will appear as the description proceeds.

Rotatably mounted in said journals is a drive shaft l. This drive shaft projects beyond the confines of housing 4 and on the outside thereof carries a pulley I0.
Shaft 1 carries a worm I I between the journals 5 and 6. A worm gear I2 engaging worm II is provided and this gear is rigidly mounted on a vertical shaft I3. Shaft I3 is supported at the g bottom in a thrust bearing l5 carried by base I and at the top in a bearing I6 carried by a plate I1 rigidly mounted on housing 4.
Near the bottom of shaft I3 is a bevel gear 20 turned thereby and engaging bevel gear 2| carried by horizontal shaft 22. This shaft is car- 5 ried by bearings 23 and 24 on base I. Shaft 22 extends out of housingllan'd carries. on the end thereof a roller"=25` having 'a'iiangelfZG extending therefrom on one-side. "Roller '25 ismounted above a slotx28-in base I and ange `26 of the roller is adapted to extend into-said slot. It-will 5 be noted that; the linefof contact between the smooth roller andvcutter is ikjustlslightlyabove the -top surface of base I and that flangef 261 is snug-againstthe inside Aof cutter38.
Shaft'22-also carries-a-gea1-30 adjacent bevel `10 gear 2 I. `This gear30meshes with-a similar gear 3|r carriedebysshaft32. This shaft is disposed belowbase Iand is generally horizontal. One end'of-shaft 32 is supported in a bearing-33 pivotally Vmounted at 134 lfrom a 'pairof lugs 135 15 (only one of which'appears) supported by base I. Shaft `32 carries `a pinking cutter 'f 38 having -the usual tortuouscutting-edge-39. A Shaft 32 is supported at the cuttingend byaffloating bearing 40. Bearingfl has pins-4I extending from thesides 20 thereof Awhichrride in recesses-12 of lugs 43 carried bylbasei I. It'will be noted thatbearing 40 is' *movable up-r and down andwis resiliently supported against lugs 43 by arm 45 pivoted at 4B to a member 41 depending from base I. Arm 45 25 carries a rigid lever 50 at the end thereof and this lever has a threaded end 5I engaging a screw 52. Screw 52 is turned by knob 53 in sleeve 54 and causes threaded end 5I to travel up and down on it. A housing 60 for the pulley is carried 30 by housing 4U.
